  • The purpose of this study was to identify the frequency of Urinary Incontinence and lower urinary tract symptoms, to identify life style problems for UI of Women in anIsland. The sample consisted of 88 women in an island, a urinary symptom questionnaire developed by Jackson, et. al. and a demographic questionnaire were used to collect the data. The results of study were as following. 1. It was reported that the subjects have experienced UI and various lower urinary symptoms such as stress incontinence, nocturia, intermittency, abnormal stream, feeling of incomplete emptying and also they have experienced some degree of 'bother' 2. It was reported that the subjects have experienced various life style problems for UI 3. There was significant relationship between age and urgency (p=0.0262), bladder pain (p=0.0268), abnormal strength of stream (p=0.0074), inability to stop midstream (p=0.0026), and ability to perform daily tasks (p=0.0488), 4. There was a significant relationship between the number of discharges and urgency (p=0.0273), abnormal strength of stream (p=0.0307), and inability to stop midstream (p=0.0122). 5. There was a significant relationship between menopause and bladder pain (p=0.0020), abnormal strength of stream (p=0.0245), and inability to stop midstream (p=0.0002). 6. There was a significant relationship between the degree of experiences for lower urinary tract symptoms and life style behavior. • Purpose: To analyze data from an observational, prospective, cumulative registry study in 805 hypogonadal men stratified by mild or moderate-to-severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) according to International Prostate Symptom Score. Materials and Methods: A total of 412 men underwent testosterone therapy (TTh) with injectable testosterone undecanoate, 393 men served as untreated controls. Measures of urinary function, anthropometric and metabolic parameters were performed at least twice per year. Results: Data from 615 men with mild LUTS (253 treated, 362 untreated) and 190 with moderate-to-severe LUTS (159 treated, 31 untreated) were available. During a follow-up period of 8 years a significant improvement of LUTS was noted for all TTh-patients whereas the control-groups showed deterioration or fluctuation around initial values. Despite advancing age, TTh fully prevented worsening of symptoms. In parallel, a considerable improvement of anthropometric parameters, lipids and glycemic control, blood pressure, C-reactive protein, and quality of life was found. Moderate-to-severe LUTS was associated with worse cardiometabolic risk profile at baseline as well as worse cardiovascular outcomes during follow-up in comparison to mild LUTS. Effect size of TTh was more pronounced in men with moderate-to-severe than with mild LUTS. Conclusions: Correcting hypogonadism by TTh is highly effective and safe for improving LUTS in hypogonadal men. TTh may also improve cardiometabolic risk and major adverse cardiovascular events.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), evaluate factors affecting LUTS among community-dwelling older adults, and provide basic data for a community-based LUTS management program. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April to November 2010 by using a structured questionnaire. Participants were 157 individuals recruited from 5 community senior centers. Results: The mean LUTS score of the older adults was 9.4 (International Prostate Symptom Score range 0-35). For each LUTS (range 0-5), nocturia was the highest (2.3). Of all older adults, 24.8% had experienced urinary incontinence more than once a month during the past 6 months. Urinary incontinence was found to be an important factor associated with LUTS. Conclusion: A community-based management program for both LUTS and urinary incontinence in community-dwelling older adults should be implemented.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to investigate demographic and disease-related characteristics that influence lower urinary tract symptoms in middle-aged women. Methods: The participants in this study were 301 middle-aged women and they completed structured questionnaire between May to June, 2008. Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) were measured with Bristol Female Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms-short form (BFLUTS-SF) and categorized as voiding, filling and incontinence symptoms. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and multiple regression with SPSS PC 15.0 version. Results: The participants who have higher economic status and drink alcohol were more likely to have LUTS score than other woman who have lower economic status and don't drink alcohol at all. Also, frequent childbirth experiences and chronic diseases conditions such as diabetes and heart disease are positively associated with LUTS score. The symptoms of filling and incontinence were affected by number of childbirth, alcohol drinking habit and chronic disease conditions while voiding symptom was influenced only by alcohol drinking habit. In multiple regression analysis, LUTS were significantly predicted by parity, drinking carbonated beverage and alcohol. Conclusion: For proper nursing care related to lower urinary tract symptoms, nursing intervention should focus on improving alcohol drinking habit and carbonated beverage comsumption.

  • The purpose of urodynamic investigation is to obtain the information on the function of the urinary system. The aim of this study is to acquire the useful information of lower urinary tract symptom (LUTS) diagnosis through void force signal as noninvasive method. The system which could evaluate the function of compensatory hypertrophy with noninvasive and comfortable method was implemented to measure uroflow and void force during urination. The implemented system composes of the sensor parts, signal conditioning parts and PC monitoring program. For the evaluation of the implemented system, the simulation of control part of the system was performed and the model system for the lower urinary system was designed. The superiority of a measuring characteristic of the implemented system was verified using the model system. From the evaluation of the model system, we have found out that the void force was dependent on the occlusion degree and compensatory hypertrophy significantly.

  • Clinical benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a multifaceted phenomenon that is due to prostatic and bladder influences as well as nonurological causes. It is also important to differentiate between the more common voiding or obstructive symptoms as well as the more bothersome storage or irritative symptoms. Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and BPH may be two separate conditions with different underlying pathologies. However, they are often treated incorrectly as one entity. Both conditions are very common and they represent chronic conditions of the aging male. They are often associated with a significant reduction in the patients' quality of life. Although these are not new conditions, there have been enormous changes in the methods of assessing and managing the patients with these conditions. This review describes some of the influential studies in this area and the current trends of the primary treatment for LUTS/BPH.

  • The genitourinary tract and gastrointestinal system are interdependent but share the same embryological origin, pelvic region, and sacral innervation. Although children with voiding disturbances often present with bowel dysfunction, this coexistence was considered coincidental until recently. However, it is now accepted that dysfunction in emptying of both systems is interrelated. Afferent impulses carrying sensory information are transmitted through the spinal cord and brainstem toward several cortical and subcortical areas, resulting in conscious control of the bladder and bowel. Alteration in these afferent pathways can result in dysfunction, including urinary and fecal incontinence. Distal gastrointestinal tract problems such as constipation might induce an inhibitory rectovesical reflex that interferes with normal voiding. Therefore, lower urinary tract function seems to be closely associated with distal gastrointestinal tract function.
