BACKGROUND: Sarcopenic obesity(SO), a condition of the reduction in muscle mass paired with an increased fat mass has been paid attention because of its association with disability in later life. A few evidence, however, has reported the association with these factors. PURPOSE: To explore the association among SO, physical function and fitness in older women. METHOD: 257 older women(age of 74) were recruited from Y city and 7 physical functions and 4 fitness tests were measured. Participants were classified into one of four groups based on their body fat and muscle mass: Normal group (GR-A), high fat(GR-B), sarcopenia(GR-C), and sarcopenic obese(GR-D). GLMand LSD-test were conducted with SPSS 12.0. RESULTS: Chair stand, arm-curl, back-scratch, 2-min steps of GR-A was higher than GR-C and GR-D(p<.05). One-leg stand of GR-A was higher than GR-D(p<.01) and of GR-C was higher than GR-D(p<.01).8ft-TUG of GR-D was lower than GR-A(p<.01). Grip strength, knee extension of GR-A was higher than that of GR-C and GR-D(p<.01) and knee flexion of GR-A was also higher than that of GR-C and GR-D(p<.01). CONCLUSION: Based on our findings, we conclude that SO is significantly associated with lower physical function and fitness in older Korean women, which alarm the risk of frailty induced by SO.
For the effective use of under-utilized resources, silver-stripe round herring (SSRH), the boiled-dried SSRH was investigated on the food component and sensual characterization. Moisture content and salinity of the boiled-dried SSRH were 27.2% and 7.0%, respectively, which were in the range described in Korean Industrial Standards. In the lipid content of the boiled-dried SSRH, viscera was higher in viscera than muscle. The major fatty acids of the boiled-dried SSRH were 16:0 (23.9%), 18:1n-9 (9.5%), and 22:6n-3 (DHA, 28.5%). The degree of lipid oxidation of the boiled-dried SSRH was similar to that of the boiled-dried anchovy caught in the southern sea. When compared to the boiled-dried anchovies, the boiled-dried SSRH was lower in total content of amino acid, while was higher in calcium and phosphorus contents. The boiled-dried SSRH was higher in taste strength, while was similar in the taste pattern to the boiled-dried anchovies. According to the results of chemical components and sensory evaluation, the boiled-dried SSRH could be substituted for boiled-dried anchovy classified into special grade.
The twenty one individuals with total knee replacement who were admitted to Kang-Dong Hospital for comprehensive physical therapy were studied in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of an isokinetic test program using the Cybex 6000 machine. The subjects were divided into three groups with the isometric exercise group receiving isometric exercise, the isokinetic eccentric exercise group, and isokinetic concentric exercise group receivind isokinetic exercise(eccentric, concentric) to knee flexors and extensors muscles for a six weeks' period using the Cybex 6000. The results are follow: 1. The extensors were increased significantly at all groups after 6 weeks training(p<.05). The flexors were increased significantly at isokinetic eccentric and isokinetic concentric group but no significantly differences at isometric group(p>.05) 2. At the effect of extensors and flexors after 6 weeks training. higher to 30
Powered prosthesis is used to assist walking of people with an amputated lower limb and/or weak leg strength. The accurate gait phase classification is indispensable in smooth movement control of the powered prosthesis. In previous gait phase classification using physical sensors, there is limitation that powered prosthesis should be simulated as same as the speed of training process. Therefore, we propose EMG signal based gait phase recognition method to classify stairs ascending and stairs descending into four steps without using physical sensors, respectively. RMS, VAR, MAV, SSC, ZC, WAMP features are extracted from EMG signal data and LDA(Linear Discriminant Analysis) classifier is used. In the training process, the AHRS sensor produces various ranges of walking steps according to the change of knee angles. The experimental results show that the average accuracies of the proposed method are about 85.6% in stairs ascending and 69.5% in stairs descending whereas those of preliminary studies are about 58.5% in stairs ascending and 35.3% in stairs descending. In addition, we can analyze the average recognition ratio of each gait step with respect to the individual muscle.
This study was carried out to investigate the optimal conditions for meat paste production with sardine. To improve the gel forming ability of meat paste, washing time and condition with alkaline solution, setting time and temperature, and heating temperature before pasteurization were controlled, and the influences of the freshness of raw sardine and the mixing ratios of ordinary and dark muscles on the duality of the meat paste product were discussed. The frozen storage showed a predominant effect on keeping freshness of raw sardine at different storage conditions and gel forming ability was maintained for 1 day at ice storage, for 3 days at
The wall shear stress in the vicinity of end-to end anastomoses under steady flow conditions was measured using a flush-mounted hot-film anemometer(FMHFA) probe. The experimental measurements were in good agreement with numerical results except in flow with low Reynolds numbers. The wall shear stress increased proximal to the anastomosis in flow from the Penrose tubing (simulating an artery) to the PTFE: graft. In flow from the PTFE graft to the Penrose tubing, low wall shear stress was observed distal to the anastomosis. Abnormal distributions of wall shear stress in the vicinity of the anastomosis, resulting from the compliance mismatch between the graft and the host artery, might be an important factor of ANFH formation and the graft failure. The present study suggests a correlation between regions of the low wall shear stress and the development of anastomotic neointimal fibrous hyperplasia(ANPH) in end-to-end anastomoses. 30523 T00401030523 ^x Air pressure decay(APD) rate and ultrafiltration rate(UFR) tests were performed on new and saline rinsed dialyzers as well as those roused in patients several times. C-DAK 4000 (Cordis Dow) and CF IS-11 (Baxter Travenol) reused dialyzers obtained from the dialysis clinic were used in the present study. The new dialyzers exhibited a relatively flat APD, whereas saline rinsed and reused dialyzers showed considerable amount of decay. C-DAH dialyzers had a larger APD(11.70

Involuntary physical activity induced by the avoidance of electrical shock leads to improved endurance exercise capacity in animals. However, it remains unknown whether voluntary stand-up physical activity (SPA) without forced simulating factors improves endurance exercise capacity in animals. We examined the effects of SPA on body weight, cardiac function, and endurance exercise capacity for 12 weeks. Twelve male Sprague-Dawley rats (aged 8 weeks, n=6 per group) were randomly assigned to a control group (CON) or a voluntary SPA group. The rats were induced to perform voluntary SPA (lifting a load equal to their body weight), while the food height (18.0 cm) in cages was increased progressively by 3.5 every 4 weeks until it reached 28.5 cm for 12 weeks. The SPA group showed a lower body weight compared to the CON group, but voluntary SPA did not affect the skeletal muscle and heart weights, food intake, and echocardiography results. Although the SPA group showed higher grip strength, running time, and distance compared to the CON group, the level of irisin, corticosterone, genetic expression of mitochondrial biogenesis, and nuclei numbers were not affected. These findings show that voluntary SPA without any forced stimuli in rats can effectively reduce body weight and enhance endurance exercise capacity, suggesting that it may be an important alternative strategy to enhance endurance exercise capacity.
This study is aimed to evaluate the effects of community-based prehabilitation program developed to prevent functional decline in the frail elderly and to provide a basis to practically operate this program in the public health care service. From March to August 2009, 110 frail elderly people were recruited among the registered participants of the home visit program in Korea to perform a prospective randomized community trial. We randomly assigned these people into two groups. One group (n=50) participated in the visiting prehabilitation program for 3 months focusing on improving their muscle strength of upper and lower limbs, walking ability, and balancing. The other group (n=60) underwent our visiting fall prevention program for control. To assess the effectiveness of prehabilitation program, physical functioning (PF) and short physical performance battery (SPPB) were measured for the primary outcomes and also some other indicators: exercise performance, nutritional status, emotional functioning, experience of admission, and events of fall. As a result, significant improvements of geriatric functional status were noticed among the participants. After 3 months, PF increased by 1.3 ± 3.8 points in prehabilitation group and decreased by 1.1 ± 5.4 points in controls (p=.020). SPPB improved by 2.4 ± 2.0 points in prehabilitation group and increased only 0.3 ± 1.5 points in controls (p<.001). Significant effects were also shown in their exercise performance tests and emotional status, the number of multiple falls, and the experience of functional decline after the fall (p .002-.038). Visiting prehabilitation program is safe and effective program for frail older adults. Thus, it is strongly recommended to universally adopt this program to prevent functional decline in the frail elderly.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of long-term aerobic dancing exercise on body composition, physical fitness and mental function in older women over 70 years old. All subjects were limited to older women aged 70 to under 85. The experimental group performed aerobic exercise of 2-3 times a week for 9.2 ± 4.6 yrs, and the control group did not perform any regular exercise and spent 3-4 times a week mainly in the relaxing facility for older. As a results in this study, the weight, muscle mass and body fat percentage of the aerobic group were not significantly different from those of the control group, but there were significantly positive effects of aerobic group in visceral fat mass, abdominal obesity rate(%), body water content and systolic blood pressure(p < .05). In terms of physical fitness, Sit & reach, one-legged stand (right) and TUG of the aerobic group were significantly higher than those of the control group(p < .05), but there were no significant differences between two groups in the shoulder flexibilities and grip strength. MMSE as a cognitive function was not significantly different between the two groups, but GDS was significantly lower in the aerobic group than in the control group(p < .05). According to the correlation analysis between all variables and MMSE and GDS, MMSE was significantly inversely correlated with height (r = -0.425)(p < .05), and no correlation was detected with other variables. However, GDS have signitively negative correlations with resting heart rate(r = -0.464), sit & reach(r = -0.525) left(r = -0.491) and right grip strengths(r = -0.635) as well as positive correlation systolic blood pressure(r = 0.482) and TUG (r = 0.479), respectively(p < .05). In conclusion, long-term aerobic exercise of elderly women over 70 older had positive effects on variables related to metabolic disease (visceral fat and resting heart rate), silver fitness variables related to falls, and depression level in the elderly.
