  • For the safe handling of toluene, explosion limit at $25^{\circ}C$ and the temperature dependence of the explosion limits were investigated. And flash point and AIT (Autoignition Temperature) for toluene were experimented. By using the literature data, the lower and upper explosion limits of toluene recommended 1.13 vol% and 7.9 vol%, respectively. In this study, measured the lower and upper flash points of toluene by air-blowing tester were $5^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively. And measured the upper flash points of toluene by Setaflash tester was $41.5^{\circ}C$. This study measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659-78 apparatus for toluene, and the experimental AIT of toluene was $547^{\circ}C$. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence of the explosion limits of toluene is proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

  • The explosion phenomenon and hazard estimate of LP gas, the study was examined into variation of oxygen concentration and LP gas concentration. As the result of experiment, the lower explosive limit was decreased as the increased at concentration of LP gas and 21% of oxygen concentration. Minimum oxygen concentration was 14.5%. 12.0%, 11.5% at 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 bar respectively. And maximum explosion pressure was increased for $6.46kg/cm^2,\;9.41kg/cm^2\;and\;13.49kg/cm^2$ according to increased of pressure. The speed of flame propagation was increased as the higher with initial pressure of LP gas.

  • Low explosion limits of flammable liquid mixtures can be calculated with the appropriate use of the fundamental laws of Raoult, Dalton, Le Chatelier and activity coefficient models. In this paper, Raoult's law, van Laar equation and Wilson equation are shown to be applicable for the prediction of the lower explosion limits for ethylacetate+ethanol and ethanol+toluene systems. The calculated values based on Raoult's law were found to be better than those based on van Laar and Wilson equations.

  • Underground power plant is required the strict safety management and safety assessment. Because it is the high risk of explosion by characteristic of enclosed space. In case gas leak of enclosed space, the ventilation facilities is very important in order to prevent explosion by the maintain less than the LEL(lower explosive limit). Thus, Through a safety assessment of ventilation volume is to reduce the risk for ventilation facilities in Underground power plant.

  • Classify of explosion hazardous areas must be made at the site where flammable materials are used. This reason is that it is necessary to manage ignition sources in of explosion hazardous areas in order to reduce the risk of explosion. If such an explosion hazard area is widened, it becomes difficult to increase the number of ignition sources to be managed. The method using the virtual volume currently used is much wider than the result using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). Therefore, we tried to improve the current method to compare with the new method using leakage characteristics. The result is a realistic explosion hazard if the light gas is calibrated to the mass and the heavy gas is calibrated to the lower explosion limit. However, it is considered that the safety factors should be taken into account in the calculated correction formula because such a problem should be considered as a buffer for safety.

  • To estimate the explosion characteristics of converted gas, the study was examined into effects of altering oxygen concentration and adding hydrogen. From the result of the experiment, as the concentration of converted gas and hydrogen were increased at $21\%$ oxygen concentration, the lower explosion limit was low. Minimum explosion oxygen concentration was $6\%$. Maximum explosion pressure of converted gas was $4.61 kg_f/cm^2$, now Maximum explosion pressure rising velocity was $130.75 kg_f/cm^2/s$ at converted gas concentration $40\%$. Also, minimum ignition energy was 0.13 mJ at converted gas concentration $50\%$.

  • The combustion properties for the prevention of the fire and explosion in the work place are flash point, explosion limit, autoignition temperature (AIT) etc.. The using of the corrective combustion properties of the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) of the handling substance for the chemical process safety is very important. For the safe handling of benzyl alcohol which is widely used in the chemical industry, the flash point and the AIT were measured. And, the lower explosion limit (LEL) of benzyl alcohol was calculated by using the lower flash point which obtained in the experiment. The flash points of benzyl alcohol by using the Setaflash and Pensky-Martens closed-cup testers measured $90^{\circ}C$ and $93^{\circ}C$, respectively. The flash points of benzyl alcohol by using the Tag and Cleveland open cup testers are measured $97^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$. The experimental AIT of benzyl alcohol by ASTM 659E tester was measured as $408^{\circ}C$. The LEL of benzyl alcohol measured by Setaflash closed-cup apparatus was calculated as 1.17 vol% at $90^{\circ}C$. In this study, it was to possible predict the LEL by using the lower flash point of benzyl alcohol which measured by Setaflash closed-cup tester.

  • Explosion limit and flash point are the major combustion properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. In this study, in order to predict upper explosion limits (UEL) for acids and ketones, the upper flash point of these were measured under the VLE (vaporliquid equilibrium) state by using Setaflash closed cup tester (ASTM D3278). The UELs calculated by Antoine equation by using the experimental upper flash point are usually lower than the several reported UELs. From the given results, using the proposed experimental and predicted method, it is possible to research the upper explosion limits of the other flammable substances.
