Silica aerogels for potential sensor material prepared by azeotropic mixture (공비혼합물로 제조된 다공성 센서재료용 실리카 에어로젤)

  • Ambient drying sol-gel processing was used for monolithic silica ambigels in the temperature range of $130-250^{\circ}C$. A new method of mesopore ambigels, which mean the aerogels prepared by ambient pressure drying process synthesis, is suggested at first. This method includes two important approaches. The first point is that $SiO_{2}$ surface modification of wet gel was performed by trimethylchlorosilane in n-butanol solution. This procedure is provided the silica gel mesopore structure formation. The second point is a creation of the ternary azeotropic mixture water/n-butanol/octane as porous liquid, which is effectively provided removing of water such a low temperature by 2 step drying condition under ambient pressure. The silica aerogels, which were prepared by ambient pressure drying from azeotropic mixture of water/n-butanol/octane, are transparent, crack-free and mesoporous (pore size ${\sim}$ 5.6 nm) with surface area of ${\sim}$ $923{\;}m^2/g$, bulk density of $0.4{\;}g/cm^3$ and porosity of 85 %.

The lyophilization and stability of Salmonella typhi Ty21a (Salmonella thphi Ty21a의 동결 건조와 안정성)

  • Salmonella typhi Ty21a is an attenuated strain of S. typhimurium and used for oral typhoid vaccine. In an attempt to increase the stability of Ty21a manufacturing typhoid vaccine, we studied about the stability of freeze-dried Th21a including additives at various temperature conditions. In order to investigate the freeze-drying rate of Ty21a according to various absorbance, we lyophilized Ty21a by using 8% sucrose as a stabilizer. The optimal freeze-drying rate of Ty21a was appeared when OD (optical density) value of the growth was between 2.5 and 3.0. To investigate the stability of Ty21a at various temperature, the viability was measured after storaging the freeze-dried Ty21a at the room temperature, cold and freezing condition for 1 week. The viability of Ty21a in cold and freezing storage condition was 5 times more stable than in room temperature. To search the most stable additives for the freeze-dried Ty21a, the viability of Ty21a including additives at the various storage condition was estimated. Mannitol and loctose were the most stable additives. Theses results suggest that the OD value of Ty21a growth, low temperature, mannitol and lactose are important factors for the optimal freeze-drying rate, the stable storage and the most stable additives, respectively.

An Experimental Study for Dryer (건조기 고안 제작에 관한 연구)

  • A newly devised dryer with heated air for the farm products, especially suited for high water content materials such as red pepper, Beer ground, each Vegetables, and Low water content materials such as Rough rice was tested for its thermal efficiency and drying mechanism, and the optimum conditions for each sample were established. In order to improve the present rural situation of drying farm products which entirely dependent upon natural solar radiation, a study upon an economic multi-parpose dryer was conducted. A series of drying tests were run first with red pepper which is one of the important cash crop in Korean farm. And successive series of tests were also run with such proaucts as garlic, sweet potatoes, green onion, radish, Beer ground and Rough rice. The results from the above experiment in drying system with heat dryer can be summarized as follows. 1. Drying duration could be shortened by the tempering effect in high water content crop such as red pepper and beer ground. 2. The color changes occured in around 20% water content in red pepper. The degree of color change was heavily affected by high temperature and short drying duration. 3. The drying condition of red pepper was most favourable at the temperature of 85$^{\circ}C$ in early stage and 80$^{\circ}C$ in middle stage and 75$^{\circ}C$ at the final stage, and with the air rate of 0.81㎥/sec and with sample amount of 200kg. 4. The drying condition of Rough rice(I.R.667) was most favourable at the templature of 40$^{\circ}C$ in early stage and 35$^{\circ}C$ in middle stage and final stage and with the air rate of 0.2㎥/sec and with sample amount of 75kg. 5. In order to prevent the color change of red pepper and to assure high efficiency in drying mechanism, it was necessary to lower the temperature as the time passes in drying process. 6. For vege tables, the drying rate were short in early stage and there was also tempering effect. However, for garlics, Constant drying rates through the early and final stages were observed and there were no tempering effects. 7.   • Dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) is the most widely-used dentifrice abrasive in non-therapeutic tooth-paste requiring, low abrasive level, high stability and excellent compatibility with other formulation ingredients. One of the difficulties encountered in the use of this material in tooth-paste is that unless storage of the product is maintained at a relative low temperature there is a distinct tendency to lose water of crystallization. Another difficulty which has been encountered is that there is a tendency for the product to become lumpy. Various means have been proposed for increasing the stability and overcoming the lumping tendency, most of which means comprise the addition of stabilizing agent. But there is not any report about the relationships between the mechanism of dehydration, physical properties, structure and manufacturing condition. In this experiment, DCPD were manufactured by methods of Moss' patent, its two varied and J.P.VIII, these were studied by means of stability test, IR spectra, and DTA. According to the manufacturing conditions, DCPD has different physical properties and structures, i. e., monoclinic system of low drying temperature, triclinic system of high drying temperature. Dehydration of DCPD may be supposed one step debydration at about $100^{\circ}$ and it finaly converts to ${\gamma}-pyrophosphate$ at about $465^{\circ}$ and if the drying temperature is high it becomes DCP anhydrous. DCPD made by Moss' patent is thought of the best polishing agent of tooth-paste.

  • We dried emitting layer of EL device at 30, 80, I20 and $150^{\circ}C$ for Ihr to investigate the effects to the emission characteristics of devices. PL intensity of P3HT thin film decreased with increasing the drying temperature. But, the EL intensity and stability of device with emitting layer dried at $150^{\circ}C$ were the best. We think it s because of absence of water and remaining solvent in P3HT emitting layer. So, We suggest that the drying temperature of emitting layer of EL device should be select slightly low temperature than its glass transition temperature.

  • In this paper, performance evaluation of catalyst for hydrogen peroxide thruster with drying condition is described. Platinum was selected as a catalyst, and alumina of pellet type was chosen as a catalyst support. Evaporation method known as general method for catalyst production was used to make the catalyst. From previous experiments, it is favorable during catalyst making process that solution of active material has low pH level. Therefore, some kinds of low pH level solution had been tested. The drying temperatures are 25, 50, 70, and $90^{\circ}C$. From experimental results, it shows better performance that drying temperature was $90^{\circ}C$ since the catalyst particle could not be crystallized but be evenly spreaded out due to the rapid evaporation of solvent.

  • Exterior grades of Douglas-fir and aspen plywood were impregnated with interior fire-retardant chemicals and redried under low-, intermediate-, and high-temperature drying conditions. Fire-retardant treatments included borax-boric acid, chromated zinc chloride, minalith, pyresote, and a commercial formulation. Drying processes included kiln and press-drying. Evaluated were drying rates and defects generated. The borax-boric acid and the commercial treatments redried at rates similar to water-treated controls. Other salt treatments were significantly slower drying and more defect prone. Chromated zinc chloride treatment was consistently the slowest drying and most defect prone. Press drying was three times faster at an equivalent temperature level. However, thickness shrinkage doubled because of 50 1b/in. platen pressure.

  • Heat pump systems are recognized to be heating and cooing systems. In this study, to check the practical application possibility of heat pump systems as low temperature storage systems and get basic data, apples of a long term storage items were stored and performance of low temperature storage and quality changes of apples were evaluated. Cooling coefficient of performance of the system was from 1.1 to 1.3. Although ambient air temperature varied widely from $-13^{\circ}C$ to $29.6^{\circ}C$ during low temperature storage period from January to June, the average temperature of low temperature storage chamber was $1.1^{\circ}C$ at setting temperature of $1.5^{\circ}C$. Sucrose of apples stored by the heat pump decreased from initial sucrose of 15.4% (Brix number) to final sucrose of 14.3%. Weight loss ratio of apples was 9.7% and internal and external view of apples after low temperature storage were very satisfactory with the naked eye.

  • Thin layer drying tests of short gain rough rice were conducted in an experimental dryer equiped with air conditioning unit. The drying tests were performed in triplicate at three air temperatures of $35^circ$, $45^circ$, $55^circ$, and three relative humidities of 40%, 55%, 70%, respectively. Previously published thin layer equations were reviewed and four different models widely used as thin layer drying equations for cereal grains were selected. The selected four models were Pages, simplified diffusion, Lewis's and Thompson's models. Experimental data were fitted to these equations using stepwise multiple regression analysis. The experimental constants involved in tow equations were represented as a function of temperature and relative humidity of drying air. The results of comparing coefficients of determination and root mean square errors of miosture ratio for low equations showed that Page's and Thompsons models were found to fit adequately to all drying test data with coefficient of determination of 0.99 or better and root mean square error of moisture ratio of 0.025.

Drying characteristics of mulberry fruit according to storage condition using far-infrared ray dryer for the production of semi-dried mulberry fruit

  • Using the relatively low-cost, far-infrared dryer inhibiting the destruction of a variety of physiologically active components of the mulberry fruit, we have studied to make semidry mulberry fruit that can be kept at room temperature for a long time. By adjusting the temperature of the far-infrared dryer step-by-step, we developed a semi-dry method of maintaining the shape of the mulberry fruit. In addition, by drying the coating of honey after removing the juice generated by the mulberry fruit thawing process improved the acceptability of the taste of fruit. We conducted heat treatment mulberry fruit into a $95^{\circ}C$ infrared dryer 5 hours to thaw the frozen mulberry fruit. After 10 to 20% of honey coating, the primary drying ($95^{\circ}C$, 5 hours) was implemented. then, the secondary drying was conducted after controlling the temperature of the far infrared dryer $60^{\circ}C$, for 10 hours. These manufacture process was able to obtain semi-dried mulberry fruit. Dry weight ratio and moisture content were around 25%, and around 16% level respectively. It was to enable long-term storage at room temperature. Therefore, it is suggested that the method of using the far-infrared drying machine to manufacture semi-dried mulberry fruit can be a way to improve the farm income if applied to the farm.
