  • Because few signals are generated using low resolution position sensor at low speed, rotor position estimation is difficult in drum washing machine application. Besides, inertia of water and drum affect the initial operation load up to two times of rated load. Therefore overcurrent can be occurred at initial operation. In this paper, IPMSM vector control for drum washing machine is proposed by applying I/F initial operating method and sensorless control. And we verify the performance through experiment.

  • With recent oil price increases, the fuel efficiency of hydraulic excavators has become a serious issue. Researchers have considered weight lightening by high pressurization in order to improve the efficiency of the excavator and pump controlled actuation (PCA) and to reduce pressure loss of hybrid and valves using mechanical inertia. However, high pressurization is not very effective because the excavator operates at a low speed; a hybrid is inefficient because little accumulated inertial energy is accumulated; and PCA is ineffective because control precision and responsibility are low. In this study, a method to minimize air and gas in hydraulic oil has been presented as a simple and new way to increase hydraulic efficiency.

  • A solenoid actuator characterized by low price, available small size, and convenience is one of the main components of production equipments requiring compact, high-speed actuators. When the response needs to be under few milli-seconds, sensing the position of the actuator is much harder because of the inherent low inertia. Improvement of the required performance of these actuators can be obtained by the simulation using a mathematical model. In this study, the mathematical model is presented and proved by comparing the responses of the actual solenoid and of the simulation. The position of the actual solenoid was measured by the eddy current sensor. The simulation was executed using SIMULINK$^{(R)}$.

  • This paper shows that the performance of a nonlinear fluid engine mount can be improved by an optimal design process. The property of a hydraulic mount with inertia track and decoupler differs according to the disturbance frequency range. Since the excitation amplitude is large at low excitation frequency range and is small at high excitation frequency range, mathematical model of the mount can be divided into two linear models. One is a low frequency model and the other is a high frequency model. The combination of the two models is very useful in the analysis of the mount and is used for the first time in the optimization of an engine mount in this paper. Normally, the design of a fluid mount is based on a trial and error approach in industry because there are many design parameters. In this study, a nonlinear mount was optimized to minimize the transmissibilities of the mount at the notch and the resonance frequencies for low and high-frequency models by a popular optimization technique of sequential quadratic programming (SQP) supported by $MATLAB^{(R)}$subroutine. The results show that the performance of the mount can be greatly improved for the low and high frequencies ranges by the optimization method.

  • An experiment is conducted for measuring the performance of an air tool, which is operated at 100,000 RPM at the unloaded state with the low torque. An experimental apparatus is developed as the power absorption type dynamometer. Inlet static pressure, flow rate, RPM and force are measured simultaneously. Torque, output power and specific output power are obtained. Those experimental results are compared with the experimental results obtained on a commercial dynamometer. However, no commercial dynamometers are available for measuring the torque above 30,000RPM. In order to use the commercial dynamometer, a reduction gear is applied to the shaft of dynamometer. Torque and power obtained on the commercial dynamometer show 50% lower than those obtained on a power absorption type dynamometer, because the inertia force is added to the air tool rotor for the braking system. Moreover, the starting RPM on the commercial dynamometer is less than 40,000RPM. From the compared results, they show that the power absorption type dynamometer should be applied for measuring the performance of an air tool operating at low torque and high RPM.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of design parameters on the friction loss in piston skirt. An analytical model to describe the friction characteristics of piston skirt has been presented, which is based on the secondary motion of piston and mixed lubrication theory, It could be shown that the skirt friction closely depends on the side force acted on the piston pin. The side force is inf1uenced by cylinder pressure at low engine speed, but by inertia force at high engine speed. The usage of extensive skirt area and low weight piston is effective to reduce the friction loss at high speed. The low viscosity oil considerably decreases viscous friction as engine speed increases, but it increases boundary friction at low engine speed. From the parametric study, it is found that the skirt axial profile is the most important design parameter related to the reduction of skirt friction.

  • This paper presents the effects of a virtual mass with a low-pass filter on the stability boundary of a virtual spring in the haptic system. In general, a haptic system consists of a haptic device, a sampler, a virtual impedance model and zero-order-hold. The virtual impedance is modeled as a virtual spring and a virtual mass. However the high-frequency noise due to the sampling time and the quantization error of sampled data may be generated when an acceleration is measured to compute the inertia force of the virtual mass. So a low-pass filter is needed to prevent the unstable behavior due to the high-frequency noise. A finite impulse response (FIR) filter is added to the measurement process of the acceleration and the effects on the haptic stability are simulated. According to the virtual mass with the FIR filter and the sampling time, the stability boundary of the virtual spring is analyzed through the simulation. The maximum available stiffness to guarantee the stable behavior is reduced, but simulation results still show that the stability boundary of the haptic system with the virtual mass is larger than that of the haptic system without the virtual mass.

  • Low-speed Diesel Engine, 7K60MC-S, in Power Plant have been experienced high vibration frequently since these units were completed the construction works, but they did not have any fundamental vibration solutions up to date. Therefore, several vibration tests and analyses are conducted to identify the root cause of high vibration and to suggest the optimal countermeasures for diesel engine. The 9.25Hz & 25.4Hz vibrations have been observed on main body during operation. The magnitude of engine upper structural vibration is generally similar in horizontal transverse direction. However, differences in the 'Fore' and 'After' vibration magnitude at 9.25Hz occurs due to the inertia momentum added by SCR duct system with the same vibration phase angle. It is analyzed that the excess structural vibration be occurred when the natural frequency of engine body is accessed the exciting sources due to the explosion pressure and the discharge pulsation of 7 cylinders in resonance range.
