In this study, microfabrication of a micro-arcjet nozzle with Fifth-harmonic generation Nd:YAG pulses (wavelength 213 nm) and its thrust performance tests were conducted. A micro-arcjet nozzle was machined in a 1.2 mm thick quartz plate. Sizes of the nozzle were 0.44 mm in width of the nozzle exit and constrictor diameter of 0.1 mm. For an anode, a thin film of Au (~100 nm thick) was deposited by DC discharge PVD in vacuum on divergent part of the nozzle. As for a cathode, an Au film was also coated on inner wall surface. In operational tests, a stable discharge was observed for mass flow of 1.0mg/sec, discharge current of 6 ㎃, discharge voltage of 600 V, or 3.6 W input power (specific power of 3.6 MW/kg). In this case, plenum pressure of the discharge chamber was 80 ㎪. With 3.6 W input power, thrust obtained was 1.4 mN giving specific impulse of 138 sec with thrust efficiency of 24 %.

Using the technology demonstration model of 75-tonf-class combustor which is expected to be used to the rocket engine of a korean space launch vehicle, 2 times of firing tests were carried out. Firing tests were done at 50% of the nominal flow rate because of incapability of the test facility and limit of the test bed strength. Through the low pressure firing tests of 75-tonf-class channel cooling thrust chamber, reliability and stability at the ignition and combustion phases were confirmed. Additionally it was foreseen that the 75-tonf-class thrust chamber would satisfy the performance requirements.

Theoretical thrust equations for the diverse nozzle expansion condition were derived. By using the obtained thrust equations, parametric studies were carried out to estimate the effect of pressure exponent, minimum operation pressure, ambient pressure and extinguishment pressure on thrust modulation performance in pintle-nozzle solid rocket motors. Analysis results showed that thrust turndown ratio can be easily attained by small nozzle-throat area variation at high pressure exponent, low minimum operation pressure, high ambient pressure and high extinguishment pressure condition. At those conditions, the highest chamber pressure to obtain the intended thrust turndown ratio can be minimized.

Robust thrust distribution method of solid DACS is researched. For the case of the system which has higher number of actuation nozzles than the degree of freedom of thrust to be controlled, the robust thrust allocation law which accommodate the abnormal operation is suggested. Assuming the situation that some nozzles are uncontrollable, the error between nozzle throat area command and response can be calculated. The error is used for realtime reshaping of weighting matrix. From the weighting effect, the nozzle which operated abnormally has low responsibility for the command then, the thrust error is reduced. The suggested algorithm is verified by the simulation of abnormal operation condition of DCS and ACS nozzle respectively.

Composite air spindles are appropriate for the high-speed and the high-precision machining as small hole drilling of printed circuit board (PCB) or wafer cutting for manufacturing semiconductors because of the low rotational inertia, the high damping ratio and the high fundamental natural frequency of composite shaft. The axial load and stiffness of composite air spindles fur drilling operation are determined by the thrust ben ring composed of the air supply part mounted on the housing and the rotating part mounted on the rotating shaft. At high-speed rotation, the rotating part of the thrust bearing should be designed considering the stresses induced by centrifugal force as well as the axial stiffness and the natural frequency of the rotating shaft to void the shaft from failure due to the centrifugal force and resonant vibration. In this work, the air supply part of the thrust bearing was designed considering the bending stiffness of the bearing and the applied load. The rotating part of the thrust bearing was designed through finite element analysis considering the cutting forces during manufacturing as well as the static and dynamic characteristics under both the axial and con trifugal forces during high-speed rotation.
Since MEMS based micro actuators or generating devices showed high efficiency per volume, plenty of research are ongoing. Among them, MEMS based millimeter-scale micro gas turbine is one of the most powerful item for replacing chemical batteries. However, due to MEMS manufacturing technique, it is very difficult that makes wide turbine bearing area. It causes low DN number, so sufficient bearing force is hard to achieve. Thus, the most important issue on micro gas turbine is to design the proper bearing which can keep rotor stable during operation. In order to that, micro-scale gas-lubricated bearing is generally used. In this paper, basic feasibility study of thrust bearing of 10mm diameter turbine is described. Thrust bearing is hydrostatic gas-lubricated type. Numerical simulation is performed with ANSYS CFX 11.0 which is commercial numerical tool. Relationship between bearing inlet pressure and mass flow rate and bearing force is figured while changing bearing gap and number of capillaries. The simulation results will be used for further design of micro gas turbine.

The thrust vector control using a fluidic counterflow concept is achieved by applying a vacuum to a slot adjacent to a primary jet which is shrouded by a suction collar. The vacuum produces a secondary reverse flowing stream near the primary. The shear layers between the two counterflowing streams mix and entrain mass from the surrounding fluid. The presence of the collar inhibits mass entrainment and the flow m the collar accelerates causing a drop in pressure on the collar. For the vacuum asymmetrically applied to one side of the nozzle, the jet will vector toward the low-pressure region. The present study is performed to investigate the effectiveness of thrust vector control using the fluidic counterflow concept. A computational work is carried out using the two-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with several kinds of turbulence models. The computational results are compared with the previous experimental ones. It is found that the present fluidic counterflow concept is a viable method to vector the thrust of a propulsion system.
Taebaeg-Hajang area, in the northern part of Taebaeg city, comprises of Paleozoic sedimentary sequences and Cretaceous intrusive and volcanoclastic rocks. The rocks in the area are affected by folding and thrusting during the Bulgugsa Orogeny. In Taebaeg area, geologic structures related with thrust movement are dominant. These structures are small scale of klippe and window, back thrust, and asymmetric folds related with blind thrust. Tear fault or compartment fault due to differential movement of thrust sheets have "en echelon" arrays. Small scale transpression effects occurred along these faults and produced the flower structure. According to strain measurement using by ooids from limestone and quartz grains from quartzite, strain ratios are very low and strain ellipsoids are apparent oblate type.

In this paper, the fluid dynamic forces and performances of a moving airfoil in the low Reynolds number flow is addressed. In order to simulate the necessary propulsive force for the moving airfoil in a low Reynolds number flow, a lattice-Boltzmann method is used. The critical Reynolds and Strouhal numbers for the thrust generation are investigated for the four propulsion types. It was found that the Normal P&D type produces the largest thrust with the highest efficiency among the investigated types. The leading edge of the airfoil has an effect of deciding the force production types, whereas the trailing edge of the airfoil plays an important role in augmenting or reducing the instability produced by the leading edge oscillation. It is believed that present results can be used to decide the optimal propulsion types for the given Reynolds number flow.

The increasing needs for higher cargo capacity in the container vessels' fleet has led to ship builder's demand for higher power output rating engine to meet the propulsion requirement, thus, leading to the development of super large two stroke low speed diesel engines. This large sized bore engines with more than 12 cylinders are capable of delivering power output up to more than 100,000 bhp at maximum continuous rating. The thrust variation force due to axial vibration occurring in propulsion shafting of these ships are transmitted to ship structure via thrust bearing. This force may vibrate the super structure of ship in the fore-aft direction and the fatigue strength of crank shaft can be decreased by additional bending stress increase in crank shaft pin and journal. In this paper, the axial vibration of propulsion shafting system on the 14RT-flex96C super large diesel engine with 14 cylinders is identified by theoretical analysis and vibration measurement.
