The object of this study is to examine the effect of short circuit time ratio (SCTR) and current rise delay time (Td) on the spatter generation at low and medium current range in $CO_2$ welding. The spatter was evaluated by the weight generated in the welding of bead-on-plate for 30 seconds (3 times). Td was varied by order of 0, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2 msec. At each Td, the short circuit time ratio was varied by the output voltage of the welding power source. In the low current range, it was found that the optimum SCTR was 20~25%, and the minimum spatter generation weight was obtained in the case of Td=0.4msec and SCTR=22% even though the remarkable difference was not showed by the application of Td. In the medium current range, it was confirmed that the arc was stable though the SCTR was increased from 20% to 40% by the control of current wave. Spatter generation weight depended on the variation of Td, and the lowest value of spatter generation weight occurred at Td=0.8~1.2msec.
The variation of spatter generation in gas metal arc welding with welding conditions and wire compositions was investigated and interpreted in terms of arc stability. The transition range from a short circuit mode to a spray mode in the mixed gas welding showed an unstable arc and generated the largest amount of spatters. Titanium reduced spatters only in the globular mode of $CO_2$welding and silicon and manganese showed the same effect The effect of silicon and manganese, however, was no longer seen when titanium was added simultaneously to the wire. It is believed that deoxidizers easily form oxides on the anode and make the arc stable even in DCRP welding. The wires with deoxidizers also showed low short circuit frequency, resulting in the increase of large size spatters.

Recently the pelionnance of CO2 arc welding machine has been advanced significantly through the adoption of i invelter circuit topology. which made it possible to improve welding perfonnances such as spatter generation and bead s state. But the conventional inverter arc welding machine generates constant output voltage which cause much spatter g generation dUling short-circuit and arc start time because it is unable to control output current instantaneously. So this p paper representes wavefCnm controlled inverter arc welding machine which control the wavefonn of welding current and t thus to suppress the spatter generation. And the system designed in this paper is the digital controller using single chip m microprocessor of 80C196KC. As a result of perfonnance test for this system, the spatter generation is reduced and s shOlt-circuit time period is stabilized compared to conventional one. And more by using switched mode rectifier for A AC/DC power convelter. unity power factor is maintained and low order halmonic spectrum is supressed.
$CO_2$ gas shielded arc welding has been characterized with its harsh arc compared to Ar-based shielding gases and with its high level of spattere specially in welding current range of 250~300 amperes. In this range of welding current, the metal transfer mode showed to be changed from short circuit to globular with the increase of welding voltage resulting in so-called the transitional mode in which both modes of transfer appeared together. To characterize the transitional mode, the short circuit events were divided into two groups, i.e. normal short circuit (N.S.C) which has short circuit time $(t_s)$ over 2msec and instantaneous short circuit (I.S.C) of $t_s$$\leq$2msec. The experimental results showed that the number of N.S.C decreased almost linearly with the increase of welding voltage and appeared to be not related with spatter generation rate. However I.S.C became to be pronounced in the transitional condition and its number reached the maximum value at around 29.0 volts. Considering the relation with the spatter generation rate, it was found that the number of I.S.C had a very strong correlation with the spatter generation rate of the transitional condition. It was further demonstrated that spatter generation rate decreased quite linearly with the decrease of I.S.C frequency. It implies that I.S.C is the most important waveform factor controlling the spatter generation of the transitional mode, i.e. in the middle range of welding current. Based on these results, It was discussed that in the transitional mode the basic concept of waveform control for suppressing spatter generation would be different from the one applied for typical short circuit transfer mode of low welding current.
Recently, application of arc welding to galvanized carbon steel sheet is on the increasing Ould in the fields of automobile and construction industries. In arc welding process, zinc is evaporated in weld pool, even under the appropriate welding condition and produce blowhole and/or pit. Zinc gas cause instability of arc and increase spatter and fume. This research is purposed to minimize the heat-input and the formation of porosities in the welded joint of the galvanized carbon steel sheet using variable polarity AC wave pulse MIG welding system. An appropriate welding condition which showed low spatter and good bead appearance was acquired by applying the AC pulse MIG welding machine to DC duplicated MIG welding with the solid wire. When oxygen gas was added to shield gas of MIG welding for galvanized steel sheet, arc length was increased and arc stability was improved. In the AC duplicated welding, the loss of galvanized layer was decreased as the amount of heat-input was decreased when the EN ratio was increased under the condition that average welding current was evenly set.
The metal transfer of CO2 arc welding machine can be devided into short-circuit(low current) metal transfer. Especially in large crrent region, the main problem of CO2 arc welding machine is much spatter generation which is caused by mainly instant short-circuit matal transfer. So in this paper descrives new current control method in large current region, which can improve welding performance and lessen spatter generation. And as a result of experiment, the effect of proposed control method is demonstrated.
The possibility of new GMAW process using economic shielding gases including CO$_{2}$ gas was investigated on the effect of shielding gas on weldabilty. In the optimum welding condition using 600A power source, FCAW process showed low depositions rate, 114 g/min at 300A, but new GMAW using other mixed shielding gases exhibited high deposition rate, 208-224 g/min at 450A. TIME gas, Ar+CO$_{2}$ gas and Ar+CO$_{2}$+O$_{2}$ gas as a shielding gas were able to be used to the very high welding current(450A), moreover TIME gas and Ar+CO$_{2}$ gas showed the highest arc stability among shielding gases studied in this experiments. The weld penetration was performed by axial spray transfer mode of weld droplet. On the basis of workability, weldability and economic point of view, Ar mixture (80%Ar+20%CO$_{2}$) gas was recommended as a shielding gas for the development and application of new GMAW process. This shielding gas showed the low spatter, good weld quality, stable arc and low cost at the region of high welding current.
Recently the automatization and the robotization of the arc welding industry is promoted and also the improvement of the welding quality and the work efficiency is required strongly. In this paper, special welding current waveform control algorithm is developed for less spatter and improvement of welding performance in the high speed and low arc voltage range. And the output control and the short circuit waveform control to the varition of the welding is studied by appling the algorithm to the power source for pulse arc welding.
Underwater wet arc welds were experimentally performed on 11mm thick KR-RA steel plate using six different types of flux coated electrodes of 4.0mm diameter, KSKR, KSKT, USBL, JPUW, UWEA and UWEB. From analysis of bead appearance, detachability of weld slag, spatter occurrence and arc stability, JPUW gives the best result, and UWEB is superior to KSKR and KSKT. By experimental result of hardness distribution on the weld bonds, UWEB weld has the narrowest bond structure which is probable condition to get the best mechanical properties of weld. UWEB and JPUW welds have more even hardness distribution across weld deposit and base metal. Upon polarization test to measure the respondency of corrosion, the electrode of UWEB shows the most excellent degree due to the low open circuit potential difference.
