  • Research on shock structures of supersonic jet through visualization experiments in low-pressure environment have not been actively conducted. Therefore, in this study, shock waves and supersonic jets were analyzed and compared by numerical analysis and Schlieren technique at low-pressure. Schlieren technique is commonly used to visualize the shock waves generated by density gradient as interferometric methods. Pressure ratio of entrance and ambient was set around 4 to observe moderate under-expanded jet. For validation of experimental and numerical results, the shock structure and frequency were compared. In the case of ST and C nozzle, the results were shown that the difference of shock cell distance was within 10%. The Mach number gradually decreased due to energy reduction, and the error rate was within 7%. D nozzle was not fitted to be observing the shock structure. Because the interface between rarefaction fan and supersonic jet was ambiguous and oscillating phemenoma occurred at end of jet, the supersonic jet in low ambient pressure was observed and analyzed.

  • Low pressure combustion tests for TDM(Technology Demonstration Model) of 75 tonf thrust chamber were performed. It has design chamber pressure of 60 bar, propellant mass flow rate of 243.6 kg/s. Due to the limitation of the current firing test facility in Korea, the combustion tests were conducted to verify the operation and the combustion performance at low pressure condition (30 bar, 121.8 kg/s). All the tests had been successfully executed without the damage of the hardware. These test results can be used as fundamental data to predict the combustion performance at design point condition for 75 tonf thrust chamber.

  • An RF inductively coupled plasma (ICP) torch has been developed as a typical thermal plasma generator and reactor. It has been applied to various materials processings such as plasma flash evaporation, thermal plasma CVD, plasma spraying, and plasma waste disposal. The RF ICP reactor has been generally operated under one atmospheric pressure. Lately the characteristics of low pressure RF ICP is attracting a great deal of attention in the field of plasma application. In our researches of RF plasma applications, low pressure RF ICP is mainly used. In many cases, the plasma generated by the ICP torch under low pressure seems to be rather capacitive, but high density ICP can be easily generated by our RF plasma torch with 3 turns coil and a suitable maching circuiit, using 13.56 MHz RF generator. Plasma surface modification (surface hardening by plasma nitriding and plasma carbo-nitriding), plasma synthesis of AIN, and plasma CVD of BN, B-C-N compound and diamond were practiced by using low pressure RF plasma, and the effects of negative and positive bias voltage impression to the substrate on surface modification and CVD were investigated in details. Only a part of the interesting results obtained is reported in this paper.

  • For improvement of the wear performance of Ti alloy, vacuum-carburizing technique was tried for the first time using propane atmosphere. During the low pressure carburizing carbide was formed at the surface and carbon transfer was occurred from the carbide to the matrix. It was found that: (i) surface hardness increased with the reduction of operating pressure and time; (ii) optimum hardness distribution could be obtained with the proper choice of temperature and carbon flux control; and, (iii) case depth was largely influenced not by time but by temperature. The two steps process was recommended for obtaining thick case depth and high surface hardness of Ti alloy. For the low oxygen partial pressure, it was necessary to introduce additional CO gas to the atmosphere.Grain boundary oxidation and non-uniformity could be prevented.

  • An electronic-hydraulic controlled line pressure system was suggested based on the mechanical controlled CVT base model. As a high level control strategy, a 3-D optimal line pressure map was obtained considering the driver's desire, driving conditions. Also, PID type low level controller was designed. Using the high level control strategy and the dynamic models of the base model CVT with electronic controlled line pressure system, performance simulations were carried out. It is seen from the simulation results that fuel economy of the electronic controlled strategy keeps the line pressure low, which results in the improved efficiency of the hydraulic system.

  • An experiment on the expression and dewatering of chinese cabbage was conducted in order to investigate its dewatering behavior. Chopped cabbage was packed into cylinder and pressed by piston upto the predetermined pressure on Instron-1000. The rates of dewatering were affected domintantly by the applied pressure, but not significantly by the packed amount of cabbage in the cylinder. The pressure effect was increased very abruptly at first, but the increase rate was very low at high pressure greater than 20 MPa, showing great deviation from linear dependence of flow rate on pressure in Darcy's Law. Therefore, water expression from cabbage was not Newtonian flow of water through cell wall. In fact, the squeezed water contained a lot of solid particles, about 3% of solid cabbage particles, showing destruction of cell wall. It appeared that compression and dewatering of vegetable wastes in the low pressure. under 20 MPa, is more desirable for later treatment of the dewater. More researches are needed in order to develop a treatment method for the solid particles in the expressed water before an expeller treatment system can be applied to vegetable wastes.

  • Reignition as special cases of acoustic pressure responses of flame are numerically studied by employing methanol droplet flame as a laminar flamelet. Quasi-steady flame responses occur in the range of small amplitude, low frequency oscillation. Reignition phenomena can occur when, by increasing the frequency of large amplitude acoustic pressure, the magnitude of characteristic acoustic time is the same order of that of characteristic reaction time of flames. And more increasing of amplitude of acoustic pressure induces the direct extinction of flame. Flame can sustain its own intensity even under the steady extinction temperature in case of high frequency acoustic oscillation, and this tendency is remarkable with increasing frequency. Reignition regime with respect to amplitude and frequency of acoustic pressure doesn't exist in low frequency($10^2$ Hz, in this study), but broadens with frequency of acoustic pressure.

  • The PSP(pressure sensitive paint) technique has recently received a large attention as a new revolutionary optical method to measure absolute pressure distribution on a model surface. The PSP technique can be applied to quantitatively investigate flow structure using a CCD camera and image processing technique. In the static calibration, the luminescent intensity of PSP coatings was measured from 0kPa to 11kPa with 0.5, 1, 2kPa increments. In this study, the low-pressure PSP technique was applied to an oblique impinging jet to measure pressure field variations on the impingement plate with varying angle of an oblique jet. The flow structure over the impingement plate was visualized using a surface tracing method. As a result, the detail pressure field distributions of the oblique low-speed impinging jet were visualized effectively using the PSP technique.

  • Test results of combustion chamber to verify the operation and the combustion performance at low pressure, design and off-design conditions for 30ton-class liquid rocket engine were described. The combustion chamber has nominal chamber pressure of 60 bar, propellant mass flow rate of 89 kg/s, and nozzle expansion of 12. Effects of chamber pressure on combustion characteristic velocity are largely affected by mixture ratio. The specific impulse of combustion chamber is proportional to the chamber pressure regardless of the mixture ratios. The present results can be used as the base to predict the combustion performance of large sized chamber at high pressure while demonstrating the possibility of low pressure firing test of large sized chamber.

  • There is a growing need to introduce advanced pressure vessel steels with higher strength and toughness for the optimizatiooCn of the design and construction of longer life and larger capacity nuclear power plants. SA508 Gr.4N Ni-Cr-Mo low alloy steels have superior strength and fracture toughness, compared to SA508 Gr.3 Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel. Therefore, the application of SA508 Gr.4N low alloy steel could be considered to satisfy the strength and toughness required in advanced nuclear power plants. The purpose of this study is to characterize the microstructure and mechanical properties of SA508 Gr.4N low alloy steels. 1 ton ingot of SA508 Gr.4N model alloy was fabricated by vacuum induction melting followed by forging, quenching, and tempering. The predominant microstructure of the SA508 Gr.4N model alloy is tempered martensite having small packet and fine Cr-rich carbides. The yield strength at room temperature was 540MPa, and it was decreased with an increase of test temperature while DSA phenomenon occurred at around $288^{\circ}C$. Overall transition property of SA508 Gr.4N model alloy was much better than SA508 Gr.3 low alloy steel. The index temperature, $T_{41J}$, of SA508 Gr.4N model alloy was $-132^{\circ}C$ in Charpy impact tests, and reference nil-ductility transition temperature, $RT_{NDT}$ of $-105^{\circ}C$ was obtained from drop weight tests. From the fracture toughness tests performed in accordance with the ASTM standard E1921 Master curve method, the reference temperature, $T_0$ was $-147^{\circ}C$, which was improved more than $60^{\circ}C$ compared to SA508 Gr.3 low alloy steels.
