  • Recently, the investigation of the cognitive radio (CR) system is actively progressed as one of the methods for using the frequency resources more efficiently. In CR systems, when the frequency band allocated to the incumbent user is not used, the unused frequency band is assigned to the secondary user. Thus, the FFT input signals corresponding to the actually used frequency band by the incumbent user are assigned as '0'. In this paper, based on the fact that there are many '0' input signals in CR systems, a low-power FFT design method for NC-OFDM is proposed. An efficient zero flag generation technique for each stage is first presented. Then, to increase the utility of the zero flag signals, modified architectures for memory and arithmetic circuits are presented. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, 2048 point FFT with radix-24SDFstructureisdesignedusingVerilog HDL. The simulation results show that the power consumption of FFT is reduced considerably by the proposed algorithm.

  • A cross-flow wind turbine has a high torque coefficient at a low tip speed ratio. Therefore, it is a good candidate for use as a self-starting turbine. Furthermore, it has low noise and excellent stability; therefore, it has attracted attention from the viewpoint of applications as a small wind turbine for an urban district. However, its maximum power coefficient is extremely low (10 %) as compared to that of other small wind turbines. In order to improve the performance and flow condition of the cross-flow rotor, the symmetrical casing with a nozzle and a diffuser are proposed and the experimental research with the symmetrical casing is conducted. The maximum power coefficient is obtained as $C_{pmax}=0.17$ in the case with the casing and $C_{pmax}=0.098$ in the case without the casing. In the present study, the power characteristics of the cross-flow rotor and those of the symmetrical casing with the nozzle and diffuser are investigated. Then, the performance and internal flow patterns of the cross-flow wind turbine with the symmetrical casings are clarified. After that, the effect of the side boards set on the symmetrical casing is discussed on the basis of the analysis results.

  • In order to effectively protect electrical and electronic circuits which are extremely susceptible to lightning surges, multi-stage surge protection circuits are required. This paper presents the operational characteristics of the two-stage hybrid surge protection circuit in extra-low voltage DC power lines. The hybrid surge protective device consists of the gas discharge tube, transient voltage suppressor, and series inductor. The response characteristics of the proposed hybrid surge protective device to combination waves were investigated. As a result, the proposed two-stage surge protective device to combination wave provides the tight clamping level of less than 50V. The firing of the gas discharge tube to lightning surges depends on the de-coupling inductance and the rate-of-change of the current flowing through the transient voltage suppressor. The coordination between the upstream and downstream components of the hybrid surge protective device was satisfactorily achieved. The inductance of a de-coupler in surge protective circuits for low-voltage DC power lines, relative to a resistance, is sufficiently effective. The voltage drop and power loss due to the proposed surge protective device are ignored during normal operation of the systems.

  • As the low power GPS signal is susceptible to interference, interference can seriously degrade the performance of GPS receiver. This paper designs a ANIEF(Adaptive Narrowband Interference Excision in Frequency domain) filter that removes narrow band interferences with low signal loss. This filter uses the pre-correlation technique and attempts to filter out the interference in the frequency domain. The interference excision performance of the designed filter is evaluated for various interferences using the ANIEF filter inserted GPS software receiver and the interference generator. Interferences considered in this paper are single-tone CWI(Continuous Wave Interference), multi-tones CWI, pulsed CWI, and swept CWI. The narrowband interference excision filter in frequency domain is very effective against various interferences and the strong interference with a simple structure. However, the signal power loss is unavoidable while transforming. In this paper, the hamming window and overlap technique are adopted to reduce the signal power loss. Finally, the interference excision performance and the reduced signal power loss of the ANIEF filter are shown.

  • In this article, a oscillator at X-band with a double H-shape metamaterial resonator (DHMR) based on high-Q is proposed with metamaterial structure to improve Ihe phase noise and output power. The proposed oscillator is required low phase noise and high output power for the high performance frequency synthesizer. DHMR is designed to be high-Q at resonance frequency through strong coupling of E-field. This character makes phase noise excellent. The oscillator using DHMR is oscillated in X-band so as to apply frequency synthesizer of radar systems. The output power is 4.33 dBm and the phase noise is -108 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset of carrier frequency.

  • The Kalina cycle (KC) is considered as one of the most efficient systems for recovery of low grade heat. Recently, Kalina based power and cooling cogeneration cycles (KPCCCs) have been suggested and attracted much attention. This paper presents an energy and exergy analysis of a recently suggested KPCCC with flexible loads. The cycle consists of a KC (KCS-11) and an aqua-ammonia absorption refrigeration cycle. By adjusting the splitting ratios, the cycle can be operated with four modes of pure Kalina cycle, pure absorption cooling cycle, Kalina-cooling parallel cycle, and Kalina-cooling series cycle. The effects of system variables and the operating modes on the energetic and exergetic performances of the system are parametrically investigated. Results show that the system has great potential for efficient utilization of low-grade heat source by adjusting loads of power and cooling.

  • An experimental study is conducted for unsteady wet steam flow in a four-stage low-pressure test steam turbine. The measurements are carried out at outlets of the last two stages by using a newly developed fast response aerodynamic probe. This FRAP-HTH probe (Fast Response Aerodynamic Probe - High Temperature Heated) has a miniature high-power cartridge heater with an active control system to heat the probe tip, allowing it to be applied to wet steam measurements. The phase-locked average results obtained with a sampling frequency of 200 kHz clarify the flow characteristics, such as the blade wakes and secondary vortexes, downstream from the individual rotational blades in the wet steam environment.

  • In this study, we present a power-efficient driving method for gas sensor systems based on the analysis of input signal characteristics. The analysis of the gas sensor output signal characteristics in the frequency domain shows that most of the signal portions are distributed in a relatively low frequency region when extracting the gas sensor signal, which can lead to further performance improvement of the gas sensor system. Therefore, the proposed gas signal extracting technique changes the operating frequency of the read-out circuit based on the frequency characteristics of the output signal of the gas sensor, resulting in a reduction of power consumption at the whole system level. The proposed sensing technique, which can be applied to a general-purpose commercial gas sensor system, was implemented in a printed circuit board (PCB) to verify its effectiveness at the commercial level.

  • Although many thermal power plants use heat recovery systems, high exhaust gas temperatures are maintained due to corrosion at dew points and ash deposits caused by condensate formation. The dew point of exhaust gas is primarily determined by the concentration of SO3 and steam, and various experiments and calculation equations have been employed to estimate it. However, these methods are known to be less suitable for exhaust gases with low SO3 concentrations. Therefore, in this study, since the temperature of the exhaust gas is expected to decrease due to the low-load operation of the coal-fired power plant, sulfuric acid condensation and low-temperature corrosion are anticipated. We aimed to conduct a quantitative evaluation to propose ways to prevent damage by limiting operating conditions and improving facilities. The experimental results showed that the corrosion rate increased linearly with rising temperatures at a certain sulfuric acid concentration. Furthermore, variations in sulfuric acid concentrations generated during the current power plant operation process did not significantly affect the dew point, and the dew point of sulfuric acid under these conditions was observed to be between 120 - 130 ℃.
