A nuclear power plant can be viewed as a large complex man-machine system where high system reliability is obtained by ensuring that sub-systems are designed to operate at a very high level of performance. The chance of severe accident involving at least partial core-melt is very low but once it happens the consequence is very catastrophic. The prediction of risk in low probability, high-risk incidents must be examined in the contest of general engineering knowledge and operational experience. Engineering knowledge forms part of the prior information that must be quantified and then updated by statistical evidence gathered from operational experience. Recently, Bayesian procedures have been used to estimate rate of accident and to predict future risks. The Bayesian procedure has advantages in that it efficiently incorporates experts opinions and, if properly applied, it adaptively updates the model parameters such as the rate or probability of accidents. But at the same time it has the disadvantages of computational complexity. The predictive distribution for the time to next incident can not always be expected to end up with a nice closed form even with conjugate priors. Thus we often encounter a numerical integration problem with high dimensions to obtain a predictive distribution, which is practically unsolvable for a model that involves many parameters. In order to circumvent this difficulty, we propose a method of approximation that essentially breaks down a problem involving many integrations into several repetitive steps so that each step involves only a small number of integrations.
In the uplink transmission of massive (or large-scale) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems, large dimensional signal detection and its hardware design are challenging issues owing to the high computational complexity. In this paper, we propose low-complexity hardware architectures of Richardson iterative method-based massive MIMO detectors. We present two types of massive MIMO detectors, directly mapped (type1) and reformulated (type2) Richardson iterative methods. In the proposed Richardson method (type2), the matrix-by-matrix multiplications are reformulated to matrix-vector multiplications, thus reducing the computational complexity from $O(U^2)$ to O(U). Both massive MIMO detectors are implemented using a 65 nm CMOS process and compared in terms of detection performance under different channel conditions (high-mobility and flat fading channels). The hardware implementation results confirm that the proposed type1 Richardson method-based detector demonstrates up to 50% power savings over the proposed type2 detector under a flat fading channel. The type2 detector indicates a 37% power savings compared to the type1 under a high-mobility channel.

With the recent development of hardware and software technology, interest in the development of wearable devices is increasing. In particular, wearable devices require algorithms suitable for low-power and low-capacity embedded devices. Among them, there is an increasing demand for a signal compression algorithm that reduces communication overhead, in order to increase the efficiency of storage and transmission of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals requiring long-time measurement. Because normal beats occupy most of the signal with similar shapes, a high rate of signal compression is possible if normal beats are represented by a template. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for determining the normal beat template using the template cluster and Pearson similarity. Also, the template is expressed effectively as a few vertices through linear approximation algorithm. In experiment of Datum 234 of MIT-BIH arrhythmia database (MIT-BIH ADB) provided by Physionet, a compression ratio was 33.44:1, and an average distribution of root mean square error (RMSE) was 1.55%.

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), most energy saving asynchronous MAC protocols are custom tailored for unicast communications only. However, broadcast protocols are very commonly used in WSNs for a variety of functionalities, such as gathering network topology information, event monitoring and query processing. In this paper, we propose a novel low-power asynchronous broadcast MAC protocol called Alarm Broadcast (A-CAST). A-CAST employs the strobe preamble that specifies the residual waiting time for the following data transmission. Each receiver goes back to sleep upon hearing the strobe preamble for the residual time duration, to conserve energy and to wake up just before data transmission starts. We compute the energy consumption of A-CAST via rigorous mathematical analysis. The analytic results show that A-CAST outperforms B-CAST, a simple broadcast extension of the well-known B-MAC. We also implement A-CAST on sensor motes and evaluated its performance through real experiments. Our experimental results show that A-CAST reduces the energy consumption by up to 222% compared to the previously proposed protocols.
Traditional structural dynamic analysis and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of large scale concrete civil structures rely on manufactured embedding transducers to obtain structural dynamic properties. However, the embedding of manufactured transducers is very expensive and low efficiency for signal acquisition. In dynamic structural analysis and SHM areas, piezoelectric transducers are more and more popular due to the advantages like quick response, low cost and adaptability to different sizes. In this paper, the applicable feasibility assessment of the designed "artificial" piezoelectric transducers called Concrete Piezoelectric Smart Module (CPSM) in dynamic structural analysis is performed via three major experiments. Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) based on Ibrahim Time Domain (ITD) Method is applied to experimentally extract modal parameters. Numerical modal analysis by finite element method (FEM) modeling is also performed for comparison. First ten order modal parameters are identified by EMA using CPSMs, PCBs and FEM modeling. Comparisons are made between CPSMs and PCBs, between FEM and CPSMs extracted modal parameters. Results show that Power Spectral Density by CPSMs and PCBs are similar, CPSMs acquired signal amplitudes can be used to predict concrete compressive strength. Modal parameter (natural frequencies) identified from CPSMs acquired signal and PCBs acquired signal are different in a very small range (~3%), and extracted natural frequencies from CPSMs acquired signal and FEM results are in an allowable small range (~5%) as well. Therefore, CPSMs are applicable for signal acquisition of dynamic responses and can be used in dynamic modal analysis, structural health monitoring and related areas.
This paper proposes a method of improving the stability in sensor-less control of permanent magnet synchronous motors. The control method for low-speed region is divided into two: One is a high frequency method, which involves a problem of reverse rotation once misdetection of the permanent magnet polarity should occur, and another one is a current drive method, which has a problem that phase and speed oscillations are caused by quick speed changes. Hence, authors propose adoption of the current drive method for the basic control system with added compensation of stabilization by means of the high frequency method. This combination secures stable control with no risk of reversal and less vibration. In addition, authors have also considered a frequency separation filter of a shorter delay time so that current control performance will not lower even when high frequencies are introduced. This filter has achieved simplified compensation using repetitive characteristic through the utilization of the periodicity of high frequency current. Simulation and experiment have been conducted to verify that the stable performance of this system is improved.

The miniature fuel cells have emerged as a promising power source for applications such as cellular phones, small digital devices, and autonomous sensors to embedded monitors or to micro-electro mechanical system (MEMS) devices. Several chemicals run candidate at a fuel in those systems, such as hydrogen. methanol, ethanol, acetic acid, and di-methyl ether (DME). Among them, hydrogen shows most efficient fuel performance. However, there are some difficulties in practical application for portable power sources. Therefore, more recently, there have been many efforts for development of micro-reformer to operate highly efficient micro fuel cells with liquid fuels such as methanol, ethanol, and DME In our experiments, we have integrated a micro-fuel processor system using low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) materials. Our integrated micro-fuel processor system is containing embedded heaters, cavities, and 3D structures of micro- channels within LTCC layers for embedding catalysts (cf. Figs. 1 and 2). In the micro-channels of LTCC, we have loaded $CuO/ZnO/Al_2O_3$ catalysts using several different coating methods such as powder packing or spraying, dipping, and washing of catalyst slurry.
Generally, T.G(Tacho-generator, Tachometer) sensor is used widely for sensing the angular velocity in rotary machine. By limitation of T.G sensor's structure, the sensed angular velocity include a periodic noise, and the noise is called "ripple" as an electrical term. To reduce the effecting of the ripple, many kinds of filters are designed and installed, but there is necessary a trade off between response time and adapted frequency band. In this paper, we propose a generalized observer to estimate an angular velocity from the output signal of T.G sensor. The generalized observer is proposed firstly for continue systems, and it is applied to DC servo motor with T.G sensor. For simulation, we measure T.G signals at 60, 400, 570 rpm respectively, and analysis those to obtain the resonance frequency of ripple by FFT method. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, we compare the results with those of a RC low frequency band filter.

With the expansion in the use of DC power systems and increased need for system maintenance, the development of measurement devices for maintenance requires high stability. Of the different kinds of DC current measurement devices, the single-shot measurement device causes the input signal of the current measuring unit to initially generate a high inrush current. The high inrush current flows into the signal processor of the meter, shortening the life of the internal fuses and causing failure. Therefore, in this study, the I2t value for increasing the durability of the fuse is designed using the available wire diameter. Operating characteristics for 210~400% over-current of the rated current, which is relatively low over-current, are realized by the plating of low melting tin metal. As a result, a method of designing a fuse element for a DC power supply, which improves the safety of the DC current measurement device by blocking the failure caused by the inrush current, is presented.

The modularized equalizers normally use additional components among the modules in the long series-connected lithium-ion battery string. In these approaches, the overall systems are heavy, bulky, and high-priced. Furthermore, the losses related to additional components decrease the system efficiency. To avoid these problems, a modularized equalizer, which has no additional components among the modules, is required. This paper proposes a novel control scheme using the magnetizing energy of the multi-winding transformer for the module equalization. In this scheme, the high duty cycle is applied to the module where the voltage is higher than the reference voltage and the low duty cycle is applied to the module where the voltage is lower than the reference voltage. Due to the different duty cycle, more electric charges are transferred from high voltage module to the low voltage module during the turn-off switching interval. Using the proposed control scheme, the equalizer system does not suffer from the size, cost, and loss related to the modularization. The experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed modularized equalizer.
