  • The low rate speech coders under 4 kbit/s are based on sinusoidal transform coding (STC) or multiband excitation (MBE). Since the harmonic coders are not efficient to reconstruct the transient segments of speech signals such as onsets, offsets, non-periodic signals, etc, the coders do not provide a natural speech quality. This paper proposes method of a efficient transient model :d a multi-mode low rate coder at 2.4 kbit/s that uses harmonic model for the voiced speech, stochastic model for the unvoiced speech and a model using aperiodic pulse location tracking (APPT) for the transient segments, respectively. The APPT utilizes the harmonic model. The proposed method uses different models depending on the characteristics of LPC residual signals. In addition, it can combine synthesized excitation in CELP coding at time domain with that in harmonic coding at frequency domain efficiently. The proposed coder shows a better speech quality than 2.4 kbit/s version of the mixed excitation linear prediction (MELP) coder that is a U.S. Federal Standard for speech coder.

  • In this paper, a VCDRO(Voltage Control Dielectric Resonator Oscillator) applied to FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave)Radar as stable source is implemented and constructed with a MESFET(Metal-semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) for low noise, a dielectric resonate. of high frequency selectivity, and high Q varator diode to obtain a good phase noise performance and stable sweep characteristics. The designed circuits is simulated thrash harmonic balance simulation technique to provide the optimum performance. The measured result of a fabricated VCDRO shows that output is 2.22㏈m at 12.05GHz, harmonic suppression -30㏈c, phase noise -130㏈c at 100KHz offset, and sweep range of varator diode $\pm$18.7MHz, respectively. This oscillator will be available to FMCW Radar.

  • In this paper, we investigate channel capacity of two kinds of uplink OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) schemes, i.e. ZCZ (Zero Correlation Zone) code time-spread OFDMA and sparse SC-FDMA (Single Carrier Frequency Division Mmultiple Access) robust to access timing offset (TO) among multiple users. In order to reflect the practical condition, we consider not only access TO among multiple users but also peak to average power ratio (PAPR) which is one of hot issues of uplink OFDMA. In the case with access TO among multiple users, the amplified signal of users by power control might affect a severe interference to signals of other users. Meanwhile, amplified signal by considering distance between user and base station might be distorted due to the limit of amplifier and thus the performance might degrade. In order to achieve the maximum channel capacity, we investigate the combinations of transmit power so called ASF (adaptive scaling factor) by numerical simulations. We check that the channel capacity of the case with ASF increases compared to the case with considering only distance i.e. ASF=1. From the simulation results, In the case of high signal to noise ratio (SNR), ZCZ code time-spread OFDMA achieves higher channel capacity compared to sparse block SC-FDMA. On the other hand, in the case of low SNR, the sparse block SC-FDMA achieves better performance compared to ZCZ time-spread OFDMA.

  • Recently, the DFT-Spread OFDM has been studied for the PAPR reduction. However, the DFT-Spread OFDM produces more ICI and SCI problems than OFDM because phase offset mismatch of the DFT spreading code results from the random phase noise in the oscillator. In this paper, at first, phase noise influence on the DFT-Spread OFDM system is theoretically analyzed in terms of the BER performance. Then, the conventional ICI self-cancellation methods are discussed and two kinds of ICI self-cancellation methods are newly proposed. Lastly, a new DFT-Spread OFDM system which selectively adopts the ICI self-cancellation technique is proposed to resolve the interference problem and PAPR reduction simultaneously. Proposednew DFT-Spread OFDM system can minimize performance degradation caused by phase noise, and still maintain the low PAPR property. Among the studied methods, DFT-Spread OFDM with data-conjugate method or newly proposed symmetric data-conjugate method show the significant performance improvements, compared with the DFT-Spread OFDM without ICI self-cancellation schemes. The data-conjugate method is slightly better than symmetric data-conjugate method.

  • In this Paper, we convert conventional low speed(1x, 6x) DVD systems designed by analog PLL(Phase Locked Loop) into digital PLL to operate at high speed systems flexibly, and present optimal DPLL model in high speed(20x) DVD systems. Especially, we focused on the design of DPLL that can overcome channel effects such as bulk delay, sampling clock frequency offset and asymmetry phenomenon in high speed DVD systems. First, the modified Early-Late timing error detector as digital timing recovery scheme is proposed. And the four-sampled compensation algorithm using zero crossing point as asymmetry compensator is designed to achieve high speed operation and strong reliability. We show that the proposed timing recovery algorithm provides enhanced performances in jitter valiance and SNR margin by 4 times and 3dB respectively. Also, the new four-sampled zero crossing asymmetry compensation algorithm provides 34% improvement of jitter performance, 50% reduction of compensation time and 2.0dB gain of SNR compared with other algorithms. Finally, the proposed systems combined with asymmetry compensator and DPLL are shown to provide improved performance of about 0.4dB, 2dB over the existing schemes by BER evaluation.

  • This work proposes a 14b 100MS/s 0.18um CMOS ADC with optimized resolution, conversion speed, die area, and power dissipation to obtain the performance required in the fourth-generation mobile communication systems. The 3-stage pipeline ADC, whose optimized architecture is analyzed and verified with behavioral model simulations, employs a wide-band low-noise SHA to achieve a 14b level ENOB at the Nyquist input frequency, 3-D fully symmetric layout techniques to minimize capacitor mismatch in two MDACs, and a back-end 6b flash ADC based on open-loop offset sampling and interpolation to obtain 6b accuracy and small chip area at 100MS/s. The prototype ADC implemented in a 0.18um CMOS process shows the measured DNL and INL of maximum 1.03LSB and 5.47LSB, respectively. The ADC demonstrates a maximum SNDR and SFDR of 59dB and 72dB, respectively, and a power consumption of 145mW at 100MS/s and 1.8V. The occupied active die area is $3.4mm^2$.
