  • PURPOSES: To characterize the aging effect on asphalt binder, dynamic shear modulus mastercurve of two typical asphalt binders are developed. METHODS: To develop dynamic shear modulus mastercurve, dynamic shear modulus at high temperature and creep stiffness at low temperature are measured by temperature sweep test and bending beam rheometer test, respectively. RESULTS: It is observed that the aging effect on asphalt binder can be clearly observed from dynamic shear modulus mastercurve and the mastercurve can be utilized to predict behavior of asphalt binder at wide range of temperature. CONCLUSIONS: It is confirmed that SBS 5% modified binder has more desirable mechanical property at low and high temperature as a pavement material comparing to PG64-22 binder and the mastercurve is an effective tool to evaluate the property of asphalt binder.

  • The practical applications of ordinary high-fluidity concrete have been limited due to several drawbacks, such as high hydration heat, high amount of shrinkage, and non-economic strength development. On the other hand, due to its advantages, such as improvement of construction quality, reduction of construction cost and period, the development of high-fluidity concrete is a pressing need. This study examined the properties of high-fluidity concrete, which can be manufactured on the low binders using a viscosity agent to prevent the segregation of materials. The optimal viscosity agent was selected by an evaluation of the mechanical properties of high-fluidity concrete among six viscosity agents. The acrylic type and urethane type viscosity agents showed the best performance within the range where no material separation occurred. The mechanical properties were evaluated to examine the optimal amount of AC and UT viscosity agent added by mixing two viscosity agents according to the adding ratio and blending them together with high performance water reducing agent. When the ratio of the AC : UT viscosity agents was 5:5, it was most suited for high-fluidity concrete with low binders by increasing the workability and effect of the reducing viscosity.

  • İzmir Bay reserves high amount of residual alluvial deposits generated by Meles River at its stream mouth. These carried sediments with high water content and low bearing capacity are unsuitable in terms of engineering purposes. In-situ soil stabilization with deep soil mixing method is considered to improve properties of soil in this location. This method is widely used especially over Scandinavia, Japan and North America. Basically, the method covers mixing appropriate binder into the soil to improve soil profile according to the engineering needs. For this purpose, soil samples were initially provided from the site, classification tests were performed and optimum ratios of lime and cement binders were determined. Following, specimens representing the in-situ soil conditions were prepared and cured to be able to determine their engineering properties. Unconfined compression tests and vane shear tests were applied to evaluate the stabilization performance of binders on samples with different curing periods. Scanning electron microscope was used to observe time-dependent bonding progress of binders in order to validate the results. Utilization of 4% lime and 4% cement mixture for the long-term performance and 8% lime and 8% cement mixture for short term performance were suggested for the stabilization of Meles Delta soils. Development of CSH and CAH in a gel form as well as CSH crystals were clearly observed on SEM images of treated specimens.

  • Silicon has been studied as an anode material for next-generation lithium ion batteries due to its high theoretical electrochemical capacity. However, the extreme volume change during the lithiation/delithiation and the inherently low electronic conductivity of silicon hamper the practical application of silicon anodes. Conductive polymer binders are effective means to solve these problems, and it has been reported that the performance of the silicon anode can be greatly improved through the proper molecular design of the conductive polymer binders. In this paper, representative recent studies on conductive polymer binders for silicon anodes will be introduced, and through this, binder design strategies to overcome the limitations of silicon anodes will be explored.

  • Recently, owing to the development of industry and improvement of building techniques, concrete structures are becoming larger and higher. This study was performed to analyze hydration reation properties of concrete with binders and admixtures, such as OPC, low heat cement, belite rich cement, slag powder, lime powder and fly ash. To investigate effects of PC type superplasticizer on the hydration, experiments involving FT-IR, XRD, DSC, SEM were analyzed at the curing age 1day, 3days and 28days. The hydration reaction rate of OPC concrete slightly delayed at the curing age 1day, blast furnace slag powder and fly ash were more effective. BRC and LHC concretes can be used for concrete structures in winter season.

  • In recent years, the applications of high-strength concrete have increased, and high-strength concrete has now been used in many parts of the world. The growth has been possible as a. result of recent developments in material technology and a demand for higher-strength concrete in Korea. In this study, we have an object to produce the ultra-high strength concrete(Super-Con) of over 100MPa with low price materials. First, the binders for Super-Con should be selected by the tests; setting time of paste, flow value and strength of mortar. From the test results, the binders are blended with ordinary portland cement, pulverized portland cement and silica fume. Fundamentally the compressive strength, frost resistance and chloride resistance are investigated.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the setting properties of polystyrene mortars using waste expanded polystyrene(EPS) solution-based binders. The binders for polystyrene mortars are made by mixing crosslinking agent with waste EPS solutions which prepared by dissolving EPS in styrene. Polystyrene mortars are prepared with various EPS concentrations of EPS solutions and crosslinking agent contents, subjected to a dry curing, and tested for working life, peak exotherm temperature and 10h-length change. From the test results, the working lives of polystyrene mortars are shortened with raising EPS concentration of EPS solution and crosslinking agent content. Low-shrinkage or non-shrinkage of polystyrene mortars should be accomplished by adjusting EPS concentration of EPS solution and crosslinking agent content.

  • To improve the poor mechanical and low-temperature properties of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP)-based propellants, the addition of binders was investigated using GAP and flexible polymer backbone-structural polycaprolactone (PCP) at various weight(wt) ratios, and varying the ratio of Desmodur N-100 pluriisocyanate (N-100) to isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). Using Gee's theory, the solubility parameter of the PCP network was determined, in order to elucidate the physical and chemical interaction between GAP and PCP. The structure of the binder networks was characterized by measuring the cross-link densities and molecular weights between cross-links ($M_c$) obtained by a swelling experiment using Flory-Rhener theory. The thermal and mechanical properties of the segmented block copolyurethane (GAP-b-PCP) binders prepared by the incorporation of PCP into the binder recipes were investigated, along with the effect of the different curatives ratios.

  • Spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) has been considered as one of most promising cathode material, because of its low-cost and competitive energy density. However, 4.7V vs. Li/Li+ of high operating potential facilitates electrolyte degradation on cathode-electrolyte interface during charge-discharge process. In particular, commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is not sutaible for LNMO cathode binder because its weak van der waals force induces thick and non-uniform coverage on the cathode surface. In this review, we study high performance binders for LNMO cathode, which forms uniform coating layer to prevent direct contact between electrolyte and LNMO particle as well as modifying high quality cathode electrolyte interphase, improved cell performace.
