  • In nuclear power plants, ferritic low alloy steel components were connected with austenitic stainless steel piping system through alloy 82/182 butt weld. There have been incidents recently where cracking has been observed in the dissimilar metal weld. Alloy 82/182 is susceptible to primary water stress corrosion cracking. Weld-induced residual stress is main factor for crack growth. Therefore exact estimation of residual stress is important for reliable operating. This paper presents residual stress computation performed by 6" safety & relief nozzle. Based on 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional finite element analyses, effect of welding variables on residual stress variation is estimated for sensitivity analysis.

  • The proper selection of materials for the intended use of the structural member is of particular interest. The paper deals with determining both the mechanical properties at different temperatures and the behavior in tensile creep as well as fatigue testing of tensile stressed specimens made of low alloy 42CrMo4 steel delivered as annealed and cold drawn. This steel is usually used in engineering practice in design of statically and dynamically stressed components. Displayed engineering stress - strain diagrams indicate the mechanical properties, creep curves indicate the material creep behavior while experimental investigations of fatigue may ensure the fatigue limit determination for considered stress ratio. Also, hardness testing provides an insight into material resistance to plastic deformation. Experimentally obtained results regarding material properties were: tensile strength (735 MPa / $20^{\circ}C$, 105 MPa / $680^{\circ}C$), yield strength (593 MPa / $20^{\circ}C$, 76 MPa / $680^{\circ}C$). Fatigue limit in the amount of 532.26 MPa, as maximum stress at stress ratio R = 0.25 at ambient temperature was calculated on the basis of experimentally obtained results. Regarding the creep resistance it is visible that this steel can be treated as creep resistant at high temperatures (including $580^{\circ}C$) when applied stress is of low level (till 0.2 of yield stress).

  • Materials used for a reactor pressure vessel(RPV) are required high strength and toughness, which determine the safety margin and life of a reactor. Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel shows better mechanical properties than existing RPV steels due to higher Ni and Cr contents compared to the existing RPV steels. The present study focuses on effects of Ni, Cr contents on the cleavage fracture toughness of Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steels in the transition temperature region. The fracture toughness was characterized by a 3-point bend test of precracked Charpy V-notch(PCVN) specimens based on ASTM E1921-08. The test results indicated that the fracture toughness was considerably improved with an increase of Ni and Cr contents. Especially, control of Cr content was more effective in improving fracture toughness than manipulating Ni content, though Charpy impact toughness was changed more extensively by adjusting Ni content. These differences between changes in the fracture toughness and that in the impact toughness were derived from microstructural features, such as martensite lath size and carbide precipitation behavior.

  • The purpose of this work is to understand the effect of Mo addition on SSC susceptibility of high strength low alloy steels in terms of microstructure and corrosion property. Materials used in this study are high strength low alloy (HSLA) steels with carbon content of 0.04wt% and Mo content varying from 0.1 to 0.3wt%. The corrosion property of steels was evaluated by immersion test in NACE-TM01-77 solution A and by analyzing the growth behavior of surface corrosion products. SSC resistance of steels was evaluated using constant load test. Electrochemical test was performed to investigate initial corrosion rate. Addition of Mo increased corrosion rate of steels by enhancing the porosity of surface corrosion products. However, corrosion rate was not directly related to SSC susceptibility of steels.

  • Effect of Co content on the microstructure and damping capacity of Fe-23%Mn-X%Co alloy was studied. The volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite of the alloy was increased with increasing Co content. The hardness was increased with lowering cooling temperature and increasing Co content in Fe-23%Mn-X%Co alloy, which is ascribed to the increase in ${\varepsilon}$ martensite content. The damping capacity of Fe-23%Mn-X%Co alloy was linearly increased with increasing the strain amplitude, and was constant regardless of Co content at the same volume fractions of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite when the low strain amplitudes ($1{\sim}3{\times}10^{-4}$) were applied, while the damping capacity with large strain amplitudes ($4{\sim}6{\times}10^{-4}$) became higher with increasing Co content at all valume fractions of ${\varepsilon}$.

  • Recently the low alloy steel plate made with manganese-molybdenum is used widely in steam drum and separator of the new coal-fired power plant boiler. This material is suitable for the vapor storage of high pressure and high temperature. The high temperature creep strength of Mn-Mo alloy is higher than the carbon plate(SA516) that used in the subcritical pressure boiler. It reduces the thickness of the pressure vessel and makes the lightweight possible. Recently in the power plant boiler operation and production process, the damage has happened frequently in the heat affected zone and base material according to the hydrogen crack and delayed crack. This paper describes the research result about the damage case experienced in the boiler steam drum production process and present the optimum manufacture method for the similar damage prevention of recurrence.
