  • For the simultaneous measurement of strain and damage signal, a fiber Bragg grating sensor system with a dual demodulator was proposed. One demodulator using a tunable Fabry-Perot filter can measure low-frequency signal such as strain and the other demodulator using a passive Mach-Zehnder interferometer can detect high-frequency signal such as damage signal or impact signal. Using a proposed fiber Bragg grating sensor system, both the strain and damage signal of a cross-ply laminated composite beam under tensile loading were simultaneously measured. Analysis of the strain and damage signals detected by single fiber Bragg grating sensor showed that sudden strain shifts were induced due to transverse crack propagation in the 90 degree layer of composite beam and vibration with a maximum frequency of several hundreds of kilohertz was generated.

  • This study aims to establish an effective methodology for the detection of instant damages occurred in cable-stayed bridges with the measurements of cable vibration and structural temperatures. A transfer coefficient for the daily temperature variation and another for the long-term temperature variation are firstly determined to eliminate the environmental temperature effects from the cable force variation. Several thresholds corresponding to different levels of exceedance probability are then obtained to decide four upper criteria and four lower criteria for damage detection. With these criteria, the monitoring data for three stay cables of Ai-Lan Bridge are analyzed and compared to verify the proposed damage detection methodology. The simulated results to consider various damage scenarios unambiguously indicate that the damages with cable force changes larger than ${\pm}1%$ can be confidently detected. As for the required time to detect damage, it is found that the cases with ${\pm}2%$ of cable force change can be discovered in no more than 6 hours and those with ${\pm}1.5%$ of cable force change can be identified in at most 9 hours. This methodology is also investigated for more lightly monitored cases where only the air temperature measurement is available. Under such circumstances, the damages with cable force changes larger than ${\pm}1.5%$ can be detected within 12 hours. Even though not exhaustively reflecting the environmental temperature effects on the cable force variation, both the effective temperature and the air temperature can be considered as valid indices to eliminate these effects at high and low monitoring costs.

  • The nonlinear dynamics of a directly forced clamped-clamped-free-free magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) sandwich shell has been experimentally investigated. Experiments have been conducted on an aluminium shallow shell (shell A) and an MRE-aluminium sandwich shallow shell with single curvature (shell B). An electrodynamic shaker has been used to directly force shells A and B in the vicinity of their fundamental resonance frequency; a laser displacement sensor has been used to measure the vibration amplitude to construct the frequency-response curves. It was observed that for an aluminium shell (shell A), that at small forcing amplitudes, a weak softening-type nonlinear behaviour was observed, however, at higher forcing amplitudes the nonlinear dynamical behaviour shifted and a strong hardening-type response occurred. For the MRE shell (shell B), the effect of forcing amplitude showed softening at low magnetic fields and hardening for medium magnetic fields; it was also observed the mono-curved MRE sandwich shell changed dynamics to quasiperiodic displacement at some frequencies, from a periodic displacement. The presence of a magnetic field, initial curvature, and forcing amplitude has significant qualitative and quantitative effects on the nonlinear dynamical response of a mono curved MRE sandwich shell.

  • The validation of performance test for newly developed or old-used sensor is very important in the earthquake monitoring and seismology using earthquake data. Especially the frequency response of the sensor is mainly used to correct the earthquake data. The technique of the calculation of phase and amplitude with Hilbert transformation for earthquake data that is filtered with band limited frequency in time domain is applied to calculate the frequency response of the sensor. This technique was tested for the acceleration sensors, CMG-5T of 1g and 2g installed on the vibration table at the laboratory and we could obtain satisfactory result. Tohoku large earthquake in 2011 observed at the station SNU that has accelerometer, ES-T and seismometer, STS-2 operated by KIGAM was also used to test the field data applicability. We could successfully get the low frequency response of broad band sensor, STS-2. The technique by using band limited frequency filter and Hilbert transformation showed the superior frequency response to the frequency spectrum ratio method for noisy part in data.

  • In magnetic levitation vehicles, the clearance between the magnet and track should be maintained within an allowable range through a feedback control loop. The flexibility of the guideway would introduce additional modes in the overall suspension system, resulting in dynamic interaction between the guideway vibration and the electromagnetic suspension control system. This dynamic interaction can be a serious problem, particularly at very low speeds or standstill, and may cause airgap instability. To optimize the overall system dynamics, an integrated dynamic model including mechanical and electrical parts and a flexible guideway as well as a control loop was developed. With the proposed model, airgap simulations at standstill were performed while varying the control gains, specifically with the aim of understanding the effects of gains of the PID controller on the airgap variation. The findings may be used to achieve a stable levitation controller design.

  • The high-skewed and/or composite propellers of current interests to reduce the ship vibration and to increase the acoustic performance are likely to be exposed to the unexpected structural problems. One typical example is that the added mass effect on the propellers working in the non-uniform wake field reduces the natural frequency of the propeller leading to the resonance with the low-frequency excitation of the external forces. To avoid this resonance problem during the design stage, the technique of fluid-structure interaction has been developed, but the higher-order effect of the blade geometry deformation is not yet considered in evaluating the added mass effects. In this paper the fluid boundary-value problem is formulated by the potential-based panel method in the inviscid fluid region with the velocity inflow due to the body deformation, and the structural response of the solid body under the hydrodynamic loading is solved by applying the finite element method which implements the 20-node iso-parametric element model. The fluid-structure problem is solved iteratively. A basic fluid-sturcture interaction study is performed with the simple rectangular plates of thin thickness with various planform submerged in the water of infinite extent. The computations show good correlation with the experimental results of Linholm, et al. (1965).

  • This study examines the design technology of searchlight optics featuring narrow beam angles and high luminous intensities. Halogen and xenon lamps, which are conventional searchlight sources, are vulnerable to vibration and shock, and are large and heavy, making them difficult to transport. In addition, the parabolic mirror located at the rear of the searchlight has the disadvantages of poor performance and low light efficiency, due to the assembly error produced during manufacturing. To solve this problem, a 1-kW halogen lamp is replaced by a 150-W high-power COB LED, and a high-efficiency TIR lens is designed to meet the target performance. Afterward, the TIR lens array is proposed to solve the surface error generated during optical injection. After a prototype is manufactured based on the designed optical system, the optical performance is confirmed to be excellent, by comparing it to that of a commercial halogen-lamp searchlight.

  • Cavitation corrosion in many industrial plants has recently become a serious issue. Cavitation corrosion has generally been investigated using a vibratory method based on ASTM G32 standard, and the test can be divided into direct cavitation and indirect cavitation. Cavitation corrosion test uses the vibration frequency of the horn of 20 kHz with constant peak-to-peak displacement amplitude. In this work, the peak-to-peak amplitude was controlled from 15 ㎛ to 85 ㎛, and electrochemical measurements were obtained during indirect cavitation. The relationship between cavitation corrosion rate and electrochemical properties was discussed. Corrosion steps of carbon steel at the initial stage under cavitation condition in 3.5 % NaCl can be proposed. When the cavitation strength is relatively low, corrosion of the steel is more affected by the electrochemical process than by the mechanical process; but when the cavitation strength is relatively high, corrosion of the steel is affected more by the mechanical process than by the electrochemical process. This work confirmed that the critical ultrasonic amplitude of 0.42 %C carbon steel is 53.8 ㎛, and when the amplitude is less than 53.8 ㎛, the corrosion effect during the cavitation corrosion process is higher than the mechanical effect.

  • Effects of direct multiple quantum excitations in vibrational energy transfer were investigated. Vibrational transition probabilities for 0${\rightarrow}$2, 0${\rightarrow}$3, and 0${\rightarrow}$4 excitations were explicitly formulated including both direct 0→n excitations and stepwise single quantum processes. For the formulation the perturbing force was derived from the exponential potential including terms up to fourth order in the vibrational amplitude. The head-on collinear collision model between a harmonic oscillator and an incident particle was employed, and the formulation was based on the semiclassical approximation. Numerical results were obtained for five different collision systems (Ar${\cdots}$O-N, He${\cdots}$H-H, He${\cdots}$H-Cl, 5${\cdots}$1-2, 2${\cdots}$12-12). Comparison between the present results and those obtained using the linearized interaction potential showed that the overall effect of including the direct multiple quantum transition is to decrease the probabilities at low collision energies and to increase them at high energies. The present results were found to be significantly different from those obtained using the linearized potential for collision systems He${\cdots}$H-H, He${\cdots}$H-Cl, and 5${\cdots}$1-2. For systems Ar${\cdots}$O-N and 2${\cdots}$12-12 the differences were negligible.
