  • The proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system consisting of stack and balance of plant (BOP) was modeled in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. High-pressure operating (compressor type) and low-pressure operating (air blower type) fuel cell systems were considered. The effects of two main operating parameters (humidity and the pressure of the supplied gas) on the power distribution characteristics of BOP and the net system efficiency of the two systems mentioned above were compared and discussed. The simulation determines an optimum condition regarding parameters such as the cathode air pressure and the relative humidity for maximum net system efficiency for the operating fuel cell systems. This study contributes to get a basic insight into the fuel cell stack and BOP component sizing. Further research using muliobject variable optimization packages and the approach developed by this study can effectively contribute to an operating strategy for the practical use of fuel cell systems for vehicles.

  • In Jeju, underground air is used for heating greenhouse and fertilizing natural $CO_2$ gas by suppling directly into greenhouse. But greenhouse heating method by direct supply of underground air has several problems as like low temperature below $20^{\circ}C$ or high relative humidity over 90%. The underground air is inadequate in heating of crops such as mangos, oranges with the growing temperature over $20^{\circ}C$. Also if the relative humidity of greenhouse is kept with over 90%, diseases can strike almost of the crops. And also the ventilation loss becomes larger because the air pressure of inside greenhouse by direct supply of underground air is higher. In this study the heat pump system using underground air as heat source was developed and heating performance of the system was analyzed. Heating COP of the system was 2.5~5.0 and rejecting heat into greenhouse and extracting heat from underground air in this heat pump system were 46.5~31.4 kW, 34.9~20.9 kW respectively.

  • Potatoes, Irish cobbler, were subject to quality evaluation from the physiological and physicochemical points of view during storage under different temperatures and relative humidities for 11 months. Quality criteria were sprouting, rotting, weight changes, moisture, total sugar, reducing sugar and vitamin C. Low temperature condition(LT, 2∼4$^{\circ}C$, 80% RH) was enough to preserve Potatoes for 11 months, but it was indicated to be limitations that the increase in reducig sugar as well as sprouting by about 3.3 to 6.7% occurred from the 3rd month of storage. Meanwhile, pit temperature(PT, 3∼15$^{\circ}C$, 75∼85% RH), room temperature(RT, 7∼17$^{\circ}C$, 80∼95% RH) and ambient temperature(AT, 2∼25$^{\circ}C$, 62∼72 RH) were shown infeasible conditions for the storage of potatoes mainly due to the increase In sprouting-rate and subsequent quality-loss after 3 months of storage. Based on the results, it proposed that more economical conditions, ranging 10 to 15$^{\circ}C$ and about 80% RH following sprout inhibition treatment should be used for the long-term storage of potatoes.

  • This study was conducted to investigate how $PM_{10}$ concentration and Relative Humidity (RH) affected visibility in Jinju, Korea. A 9-yr dataset of 1 h averages for visibility, $PM_{10}$, and RH data was analyzed to examine the correlation between these variables. On average, visibility decreased by 1.4 km for every $10{\mu}g/m^3$ increase in $PM_{10}$ and by 2.1 km for every 10% increase in RH. In general, a negative correlation was observed between visibility and and $PM_{10}$ concentration. However, under conditions of low $PM_{10}$ concentration(< $15{\mu}g/m^3$) and visibility(< 2 km), there was a positive correlation between these two variables. In this case, RH levels were high (> 75%). A high correlation analysis between two variables need to be under control conditions with RH < 75%, $PM_{10}$ $15{\sim}100{\mu}g/m^3$, and visibility > 2 km.

  • Adequate relative humidity is needed in the common living space, for human health, and industrial space, for maintenance and efficiency. Evaporative humidifier systems generally have slow response tendencies of air loads, but relatively low initial investment and maintenance costs. Humidification efficiency in the evaporative humidifier is dependent mostly on the shapes and arrays of humidifying modules. So, we tried to apply the computational fluid dynamics to the evaporative humidifier systems, and studied the humidification efficiency of evaporative humidifiers, through the outlet air conditions.

  • Pod dehiscence in six rape varieties drying after harvest in the field was investigated with use of strain gauge. The development of rape pods was observed after 3-4 days of flowering. The length of pod and seed reached of their maximal size at the 20th and 35th days after flowering, respectively. The seed shape was nearly spherical 40 days after flowering, and pod width was maximal at the 45th days of flowering. Moisture content of seeds was 70% at cutting time, reduced to 30% at 5 days of drying in the plastic film house and 10% at 14 days. Pod dehiscence showed a diurnal change with moisture content of pods and relative humidity, and the dehiscence became difficult under low moisture content of pods and relative humidity of which seems to be related to the rapid drying condition of pod.

  • This study has measured indoor temperature and relative humidity and evaluated it for one year by selecting Chungnam's rural areas for improving indoor environment of rural housing in the circumstance that the environment of housing is poor due to deterioration of rural housing. As a result of its evaluation, the indoor temperature difference by household appeared to be more than $13^{\circ}C$, and it was measured that the indoor temperature was mostly low. A difference of more than 40% in case of relative humidity occurred, so the difference of the indoor environment by household was clear. In case of the thermal comfort zone, the number of households that are distributed to more than 50% of a thermal comfort criterion in the winter was only 3 households, rather than the summer.

  • Chestnuts(Castanea cretana, Eunki) were used for quality evaluations from the physiological and physicochemical points of view during storage under different temperatures and relative humidities for 8 months. Quality criteria included spouting, rotting, weight loss, and the changes in moisture, total sugar, reducing sugar, and total vitamin C of the stored sample. Sprouts(roots) were developed in about 2 months in all stored samples which had been mixed with sawdust(50% moisture) and stored under the conditions of 2∼25$^{\circ}C$ and 62∼95% RH. The sprout development was more significant in the storage temperature of Pit(9${\pm}$6$^{\circ}C$, 80${\pm}$5% RH, PT)and room(16${\pm}$7$^{\circ}C$, 85${\pm}$10% RH, RT) than low(3${\pm}$1%, 80${\pm}$5% RH, LT)and ambient(14${\pm}$11$^{\circ}C$, 67${\pm}$5% RH, AT). The rates of rotting and weight loss were appreciable in the order of PT, AT, RT and LT, and those of LT were 1∼2%. The use of wet sawdusts resulted in the increase of moisture contents in stored samples, thereby causing the rotting phenomena. Some chemical components of stored samples were found liable to the changes according to storage conditions, that is; total sugars showed a decreasing tendency along with a temporary increase during storage, and both reducing sugar and vitamin C were similarly accumulated in the samples stored at low temperature conditions. The results indicated that long-term storage of chestnuts will be possible in either cases of the application of low temperature following sprout-inhibition treatment or the use of lower temperature than 0$^{\circ}C$ to suppress its sprouting during storage.

  • Objective of this study was to investigate the effects of all current speed on the microclimates above and inside the plug stand under artificial light. Maximum air temperature appeared near the top of the plug stand. Difference in air temperature inside the plug stand increased with the decreasing air current speed. Difference in relative humidity(DRH) to the relative humidity at the Inlet of the main air flow conditioner Inside and above the plug stand decreased with the increasing air current speed. Relative humidity inside the plug stand was 10-15% higher than that above the plug stand. DRH inside a stand of plug at air current speed of 0.3m s$^{-1}$ was about two times as many as that at air current speed of 0.9 m s$^{-1}$ . DRH inside the plug stand was 2.8-6.5% higher at LAI of 2.6 than that at LAI of 0.5. Gradient for the vapour pressure deficit was distinctly appeared at the low air current speed. Direction of vapour pressure flux is from the medium surface upwards. Difference in vapour pressure(DVPD) to the vapour pressure deficit at the inlet of the main air flow conditioner inside and above the plug stand decreased with the increasing height above the medium surface. DVPD inside the plug stand was 0.3-0.4㎪ higher at air current speed of 0.9m s$^{-1}$ than that at air current speed of 0.3m s$^{-1}$ . Results for the effects of air current speed on the relative humidity and vapour pressure deficit indicated that the microclimates above and inside the plug stand at the rear region in plug trays were slightly unfavorable compared to those at middle region.

  • Due to the development of civilization, the humans is privileged the rich of technologies for housing thermal environment. But, this kind of technological development caused enough trouble of energy excessive consumption. For solve this problem, many researchers strive to exploit the low energy sustainable techniques. For such a reason, the eco-friendly techniques of vernacular house are resurfacing. These traditional techniques are applied to a development of eco-friendly modern housing. They are no longer recognized as outdated products. On this context, this study proposes an scientific analysis on the thermal environment characteristics of Neolithic thatched-roof dugout hut(Um house). So far the several studies have been carried out in viewpoint of the history and structural compositions of the Um house which has been used as the normal housing for about 1000 years in the Neolithic era, however the thermal characteristics analysis of the Um house has never been studied. Um house is not a housing which has been composed by the scientific analysis or architectural design technology, but evolved empirically over a long period. This study on the thermal environment characteristics of Um house would provide basic information for the development of korean eco-friendly rural housing by korean climate characteristics. In this study, the thermal environmental characteristics of the Um house in the Neolithic era was analysed experimentally. The results of this study could be summarized as follows: 1. When the solar insolation and the ambient temperature in the daytime were $420W/m^2$ and $17^{\circ}C$ respectively, the surface temperature of the Um house roof covered with the rice straw was $37^{\circ}C$ and that in the roof $32^{\circ}C$, and in the conditions above the air temperature in the room was $15^{\circ}C$. 2. When the ambient relative humidity was 40%, that in the room of the Um house 50%, and at the ambient relative humidity of 90~100%, that in the room was 60%. 3. Through the experimental analysis, it was verified that the enthalpy and relative humidity is in an inverse relationship. 4. In general the comfort degree in the living space is changed with the seasonal climate, also in this study, the comfort degree in the room of the Um house in October and November was higher than that in May and June.
