  • This paper presents a numerical method for estimating the curvature, deflection and moment capacity of FRP-reinforced concrete encased steel composite beams (FRP-RCS). A sectional analysis is first carried out to predict the moment-curvature relationship from which beam deflection and moment capacity are then calculated. Comparisons between theoretical and experimental results of tests conducted elsewhere show that the proposed numerical technique can accurately predict moment capacity and deflection of FRP-RCS composite beam. The numerical results also indicated that beam ductility and stiffness are improved when encased steel is added to FRP reinforced concrete beams. ACI, ISIS and Bischoff models for deflection prediction compared well at low load, however, significantly underestimated the experimental results for high load levels.

  • This paper presents an experimenal proof for criteria of selecting an optimum adaptive beamforming (ABF) algorithm for a large distorted phased array. A single point target embedded in clutter model is suggested to compare four well-known ABF algorithms. These algorithms are tested to low variance and high variance real data for self-calibrating a large distored phased array. It is shown that these algorithms require at least one dominant scatterer with large radar cross section (RCS) or multiple scatterers with moderate RCS in the field of view. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the comparisons of the four algorithems in terms of gain loss and image correlaion coefficient, along with corresponding reconstructed cross-range images and range-azimuth images.

  • New design concept of Reactor Coolant System (RCS) including a reactor assembly for the SMR is introduced in this work. An exploration of new type of reactor that is advanced from proposed SMRs is performed by using systems engineering approach. In this point of view project structured on three main phases; needs analysis (NA), concept exploration (CE), and concept definition (CD). Main objectives as an output of the CE stage are a small size, low cost, shortening the schedule, and enhancing safety. The SMRs usually have a small size requirement. In order to meet the size requirement and to achieve a productivity, in other words, easiness to manufacture, this paper suggests an integrated PWR design concept through researching predecessors. Although the integrated PWR concept provides many advantages, it has disadvantages that composite of maintenance and a low availability problem. Therefore, this paper comes up with a run-to-fail design concept based on modular design to address the maintenance problem and to maximize the availability of SMRs as well as to be compatible with the overall-SMRs including Barge Mounted(BM)type.

  • In a primary reactor cooling system(RCS), a dissimilar weld zone exists between cast stainless steel(CF8M) in a pipe and low-alloy steel(SA508 cl.3) in a nozzle. Thermal aging is observed in CF8M as the RCS is exposed for a long period of time to a reactor operating temperature between 290 and $330^{\circ}C$, while no effect is observed in SA508 cl.3. The specimens are prepared by an artificially accelerated aging technique maintained for 300, 1800 and 3600 hrs at $430^{\circ}C$, respectively. The specimens for elastic-plastic fracture toughness tests are according to the process in the thermal notch is created in the heat affected zone(HAZ) of CF8M and deposited zone. From the experiments, the $J_{IC}$ value notched in HAZ of CF8M presented a rapid decrease up to 300 hours at $430^{\circ}C$ and slowly decreased according to the process in the thermal aging time. Also, the $J_{IC}$ value presented a lower value than that of the CF8M base metal. And, the $J_{IC}$ of the deposited zone presented the lowest value of all other cases.

And, the specimens for fatigue crack growth tests are prepared in three classes, which notches are created at the center of deposited zone, the HAZ of CF8M, and the HAZ of SA508 cl.3. From the experiments, the J-integral values with the increase of aging time decrease, and the differences of the fatigue crack growth behaviors are relatively small in the three classes specimens.

  • A thermal aging is observed in a primary reactor cooling system(RCS) made of a casting stainless steel when the RCS is exposed for long period at the reactor operating temperature, 290~3300C An investigation of effects of thermal aging on a low cycle fatigue characteristics included a stress variations caused by a reactor operation and trip, is required. The purpose of the present investigation is to find an effect of a thermal aging of the CF8M on a low cycle fatigue life. The specimen of CF8M are prepared by an artificially accelerated aging technique holding 300 and 1800hr at 4300C respectively. The low cycle fatigue tests for the virgin and two aged specimens are performed at the room temperature for various strain amplitudes($\varepsilon$ta), 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5% strain. Through the experiment, it is found that the fatigue life is rapidly reduced with an creasing of the aging time. The experimental fatigue life estimation formulas between the virgin and two aged specimen are obtained and are proposed to a analysis purpose.

  • The scattered field by a gap/crack on the PEC surface of a large object having low-observable RCS cannot be negligible, but may not be analyzed by the known high-frequency technique. If the electrical width of the crack is very small, the crack can be modeled by an impedance strip, whose scattering formulation can be analytically obtained based on a low-frequency approximation. The scattering solution is formulated for the 2D strip and TE(Transverse Electric) or TM(Transverse Magnetic) wave incidence, from which a 3D ILDC(Incremental Length Diffraction Coefficients) can be extracted. Using the ILDC formulation, the scattering by any arbitrary shaped crack can be estimated. In this paper, an improved ILDC equations are proposed, which combine the known TE and TM solutions. The improved accuracy of the proposed solution is numerically verified.

  • In this paper, we propose a conformal Ku-band data link antenna to ensure low RCS of stealth UAV. As a phased array antenna with electrical beam steering function, a transmitter and a receiver were designed and manufactured for FDD communication, respectively. Each antenna is designed as a 12*12 planar array antenna and has a function to form a uni-directional pattern and a bi-directional pattern through phase control of unit elements. The beam steering range is designed to be able to steer up to 60 degrees in theta direction and 360 degrees in the phi direction. As a result of manufacturing and measurement, the conformal type radome has low transmission loss and meets the required specifications including system performance. The feasibility of mounting the stealth UAV has been confirmed, and future research directions such as interworking of baseband devices and conversion to digital beam steering function are suggested.

  • The stealth technology can increase the survivability of aircrafts or warships and enhance the capability of mission completion in hostile territory. The purpose of this paper is to present the low observable structure with curved surfaces made by fiber-reinforced composites and to show the possibility of developing omnidirectional stealth platforms for military applications. In this study, we developed a radar absorbing structures(RAS) based on a circuit analog absorber to reduce the radar cross section(RCS) of an object with curved surfaces. Firstly, the RAS with a periodic square patterned conducting polymer layer was designed and simulated using a commercial 3-D electromagnetic field analysis program. Secondly, the designed semi-cylindrical structure with low RCS was fabricated using fiber-reinforced composites and conducting polymer. To make the periodic pattern layer, acts as resistive sheet, the intrinsic conducting polymer paste containing PEDOT with a polyurethane binder was used. Finally, the radar cross section was measured to evaluate the radar absorbing performances of the fabricated RAS by the compact range facility in POSTECH.
