A numerical investigation has been carried out for the flow characteristics after exchange of some filters from the original layer to the new low pressure loss layer with equal filtering efficiency. The solution domain includes upper plenum, filter layer, clean space, access panels, and lower plenum. The concept of the distributed pressure resistance was applied to describe the momentum loss in filter layer and access panels. The evolution of the flow field is simulated using the low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. over bar turbulent model and SIMPLE algorithm based on the finite volume method. As a result, after the exchange of filter layer the power requirement can be reduced by 8-9 percent. The results also demonstrate that the perpendicularity of the flow near access panels may become worse at new filter layer than origianl filter layer. But the situation can be recovered by adjusting the jopening ratio of access panels.
Cooking oil in kitchen-fog is the most harmful factor to the health of a cook. The proposed filter is a tool that protects the cooked state, to prevent users from inhaling oil mist in the kitchen. Due to efficiency issues, existing filters are of the mesh type or baffle type. In this paper, CFD analysis is carried out to select a filter with low pressure loss and low efficiency, and to attach the sub-filter to improve efficiency. The results of the analysis on the collection efficiency and pressure loss of three sub-filters, i.e., circle type, droplet type, and cone type, showed that the collection efficiency was 64.09% and the pressure loss was 1.26 mmAq when the circle type sub-filter was applied. The position of the sub-filter showed the best efficiency and pressure loss when it was located at the bottom of the center of the gap of the main filter.
In this study, using coke dust from ironwork, the pulse pressure on a pulse air jet bag filter was investigated considering the influence of the pressure loss due to filtration velocity and pressure intervals. The research on the optimal pulse pressure prediction of a pulse air jet type bag filter using coke dust showed the following results. Pressure loss volatility produced by the pulse pressure under low dust concentration(0.5, $1g/m^3$) and low face velocity(1.25 m/min) was less than $10mmH_2O$. This suggests that the pulse pressure has a low impact on the pressure loss. In contrast, pressure loss volatility under high dust concentration($3g/m^3$) and high face velocity(1.75 m/min) was $25mmH_2O$. Therefore, pulse pressure with high dust concentration and high face velocity has a strong influence on the pressure loss volatility, compared to the condition of low dust concentration and low face velocity. The optimal pulse pressure of inlet dust concentration($0.5g/m^3$) was $6kg/cm^2$ under the same face velocity(1.75 m/min). As concentration increased from 1 to $2g/m^3$, the pulse pressure gradually reached $5kg/cm^2$ thus indicating that the pulse pressure($5kg/cm^2$) is pertinent at a high concentration($3g/m^3$). The pulse intervals: 20, 25 and 30 sec, which are relatively longer than 10 and 15 sec, corresponded to high pressure loss volatility produced by the pulse pressure. Furthermore, low pressure loss volatility was noted at $5kg/cm^2$ of the overall pulse pressure.
We propose an equivalent model of a sintered metal mesh filter calculated by Ergun's equation and polynomial regression for the CFD analysis of breakaway devices at a hydrogen fueling station. CFD analysis of filters that cause high pressure loss is essential because breakaway devices in high-pressure hydrogen conditions require low pressure loss. A differential pressure experiment with a filter was performed in a low-pressure air condition considering similarities. An equivalent model was developed by deriving the resistance value by the polynomial regression using the experimental results. The results of CFD analysis using the equivalent model show that there was almost no error in the operating condition of the breakaway device compared to the experimental results. Through this work, we believe that the proposed equivalent model of a filter can be applied to the analysis of breakaway devices in hydrogen fueling stations. We will study how to optimize the shape and position of the filter in breakaway devices using the developed equivalent model.
A metal fiber bed has seldom been applied to the practical filtration process despite its excellent mechanical and chemical stability. The filter-bed used in this work was highly porous with open structure, of which apparent porosity was 80 ∼ 90%. Although pressure loss across the filter-bed was very low, separation efficiency was found to be quite high. This paper focuses on the basic filtration mechanisms of a metal filter-bed and a thin ceramic filter from fly ash for reference. The experimental parameters were face velocity, dust loading and porosity of filter-bed. Pressure drop increased with increasing face velocity and dust feeding load for both filters. It also showed that dust particles deposited in the deep flow path, finally resulting in clogging the pore channels. It thereby indicates that the dominating mechanism of the metal filter-bed would be depth filtration. Meanwhile, the thin fly ash composite filters trapped the aerated dust mainly on the surface of the filter medium, so that the instantaneously formed dust layer might cause a steep increase of pressure drop across the filtration system.

The mixture of bentonite powder and water is generally used to maintain the stability of excavation surface during the construction of vertical cutoff walls. The filter cake on the sidewall surface is the result of filtration of slurry into the adjacent soil formation. The filter cake is believed to have a very low hydraulic conductivity compared to that of the cutoff wall. This paper evaluates hydraulic conductivities of bentonite filter cakes set up with three types of bentonites under various pressure levels. A modified fluid loss test was employed in this experiment. Theory of filtration process was reviewed to explain the procedure in the present experiment. Hydraulic conductivity of the filter cakes with consideration of the filter medium resistance was evaluated. The results of the experiment with two calculation methods and discussion are presented to show the efficiency of the modified fluid loss test.

The objective of this study was to determine if MWF(metalworking fluids) mass sampled on PVC filter lose during flowing airstream and desiccating and to present direction to correct the underestimated MWF mass. Flowing airstream caused MWF sampled on PVC filter to be breakthrough and lost. Loss of MWF on PVC filter increased in proportion to time of flowing airstream. Meanwhile, loss of MWF was observed during desiccating without flowing airstream. Vapor pressure of MWF is so low that it would not normally be thought to evaporate. However, MWF mist sampled on PVC filter has so great a surface area that loss by flowing airstream and evaporation can be appreciable. Loss between fresh and used MWF was also different. Those study results mean that NIOSH method(#0500 method) to take airborne MWF mist with PVC filter is not valid. Media to sample airborne MWF accurately still have not been introduced. It seems to be needed to estimate how much MWF on PVC filter may be lost during sampling. Regression model between sampling time including 1 day desiccating and total loss of MWF was "Total loss(%)=18.4%+0.06 sampling time(p=0.000, r2=49.6%)". This model help correct MWF lost when one measures airborne MWF using NIOSH # 0500 method.

In the most of acoustic system with low flow rate and low pressure level, one-dimensional, linear modeling techniques are used very well. At low frequency, the tube is modeled as inertia element and cavity as capacitance element, and to extend the range of frequency normal mode oscillators are represented. Bond graph modelling techniques are proposed to predict TL (Transmission Loss) and time response which is impossible by transfer matrix in muffler system. A simple acoustic filter which consists of several tubes and cawities is analyzed in both time and frequency domain.
This study was to examine characteristics of treating toluene vapor, which gets to be problematic due to its harmful carcinogenicity and mass generation from various sources, through a biological treatment facility which is environment-friendly and adopts a high-efficient and low-cost clean technology. In order to identify whether Alnus Firma Fruit (AFF) can be used as a media for a bioreactor, its utility and basic operating factors, a study was conducted on pressure drop, supply of nutrient substances and retention time which are operating factors of a biofilter, and eliminating characteristics were compared between AFF and the conventional biological activatedcarbon (BAC) widely used as filter media. In the case of AFF, the initial microbial deposits was 2.3${\times}$10$^{7}$ CFU/g dry AFF, which represents the initial microbial density higher than the case of BAC showing 5.5${\times}$10$^{6}$ CFU/g dry BAC And it took about 2 weeks to acclimate until its eliminating rate got to be increased over 90%. As a result of comparing pressure loss taking place with the lapse of time between BAC and AFF, after 130 days passed at SV 25h$^{-1}$ , BAC showed that its eliminating efficiency had a tendency to drop greatly due to a great pressure loss (0.53\longrightarrow54.7 mm$H_2O$/m) caused by an excess of biomass as accumulated. On the other hand. AFF showed that the pressure drop was 0.53 mm$H_2O$/m, about 2 times as much as the initial pressure loss of 0.4 mm$H_2O$/m, which represents no great change in the pressure loss, and its eliminating efficiency was also shown to be continuously high. Therefore, when AFF was used as a filler for a biological treatment facility, a biological filter enabling improvement of the purifying efficiency to be promoted could be provided, and moreover, the pressure loss was so small that the filler replacement cycle or the back flushing cycle could be extended. So, even in terms of the operating cost, it was identified to be an economical filler When an inorganic material was used as a filler, the biofilters performance acted sensitively on whether nutrient substances were supplied or not. In the case of AFF with low adsorptivity, addition of ethyl-alcohol increased the solubility of toluene, and consequently, biodegradation got to be actively made by microbes, and thus, its eliminating rate could be increased. As the flow velocity and the inflow concentration got to be more increased, its eliminating rate got to be lower, and particularly, an increase in the flow velocity made its eliminating rate drop more greatly than an increase in the concentration.
