The Low-NOx Characteristics of Premixed Lean-Burn Gas Turbine Combustor (예혼합 희박연소 가스터빈 연소기의 저 NOx 특성)

  • The combustion characteristics for the low NOx 50 kW-class gas turbine combustor have been experimentally investigated. In order to achieve the premixing and the lean burn combustion, the geometries of the primary zone including premixed chamber were modified from conventional combustor. The centerline profiles of CO and NO concentration, and temperature were measured for the premixed combustors with or without dilution holes in the liner. The effects of the pilot fuel injection rate and air dilution on flame stabilization and pollutant (CO, NO) emission are discussed in detail.

  • For the compactness of regenerative combustion, self regenerative combustion and embedding regenerator inside furnace are proposed. The Self Regenerative burner system was developed to enhance thermal efficiency and Low Nox emission. In the twin regenerative system, two burner heads are generally used for preheating and exhausting combustion mode. But self regenerative burner system use only single nozzle body for regenerative combustion. Also two kind of regenerator, internal and external type, were designed to operate conveniently in both large and small furnace. According to test result, the self regenerative combustion system gives strong internal exhaust gas recirculation that reduce NOx emission significantly. NOx was measured as 50ppm(5% O2, 1290C furnace temperature). Also it is found that the fuel saving rate due to the self regenerative burner system reach to 30-40%. Thus it can be concluded that self regenerative mild combustion system appears to provide a reasonable regenerative burner for compactness and high performance as compared with conventional twin regenerative burner system. Also in the RT Application , compact twin regenerative burner was developed with the help of embedding regenerator inside furnace.

  • The demand for a boiler with low NOx burner is increasing with the recent strict NOx regulation. Staged burner is a common low NOx burner to suppress the formation of thermal NOx by yielding local fuel rich and fuel lean condition. The staged burner gives fire with bigger frontal area and length compared with a conventional burner, which changes heat transfer characteristics in the combustion chamber. The heat transfer and exhaust gas characteristics has been studied in the present study for a 0.5 t/h class furnace type boiler adopting the staged burner. A numerical simulation has been conducted to clarify the detailed physics inside the combustion chamber.

  • The conventional regenerative system has a high thermal efficiency as well as energy saving using the high preheated combustion air. in spite of these advantages, it can not avoid high nitric oxide emissions. Recently, flameless combustion has received much attention to solve these problems. In this research, numerical analysis is performed for flow-combustion phenomena in the self regenerative burner. In this analysis we used Fluent 6.0 code. the that is developed for commercial use, Methane gas is used as a fuel and two-step reaction model for methane and Zeldovich mechanism for NO generation are used. the velocity of the preheated combustion air is used as a parameter and we analyze the characteristics of flow-field, temperature distributions and NO emissions. Due to the increased recirculation rate, the maximum temperature of flame is significantly increased and NOx emissions is reduced

  • This paper investigated the combustion and exhaust gas characteristics of gasoline direct injection engines for various cooling water temperature. The engine-out nanoparticle emission number and size distribution were measured by a DMS-500 equipped upstream of the catalyst. A CLD-400 and an HFR-400 were equipped at the exhaust port to analyze the cyclic NOx and total hydrocarbon emission characteristics. The results showed that the nanoparticle emission number greatly increased at low coolant temperatures and that the exhaust mainly contained particulate matter of 5.10 nm. THC also increased under low temperature conditions because of fuel film on the combustion chamber. NOx emissions decreased under high temperature conditions because of the increase in internal exhaust gas recirculation. In conclusion, an engine management system control strategy for driving coolant temperature up rapidly is needed to reduce not only THC and NOx but also nanoparticle emissions.

  • Flue gas recirculation(FGR) is an effective combustion technique for reducing nitrogen oxides(NOx) and is applied in various fields of low-pollution combustion. Continuing the previous study, a numerical analysis was conducted to identify changes of flame characteristics and NOx formation mechanism with applying FGR technique in CH4/air premixed counterflow flames. NOx emitted was divided into four main reaction paths(thermal NO, prompt NO, N2H and N2O), showing relatively the production rate of NO with the recirculation ratio. As a result, thermal NO contributed greatly to the overall NO whereas the effect of N2H was minimal. In addition, emission index of NO was compared as the recirculation ratio increased by modifying the UC San Diego mechanism to examine the contribution of thermal NO.

NOx Production Characteristics of Offset-Opposed Impinging Jet Flame (Offset-대향 분출혐의 NOx 생성특징)

  • The NOx production and combustion characteristics are experimentally compared with an offset with counter-orifice configuration. The offset-opposed impinging flame creates stronger vortex around the stagnation point than the opposed flame. The thermal and mass mixtures be improved and the delay of turbulence dissipation be occurred by the strong vortex. In result, the turbulent flame structure transferred from the wrinkled flame and the corrugated flame to the distributed reaction flame. It was found that the offset-opposed impinging flame decreased more NOx and improved the combustion efficiency than the opposed flame. The principal objective of this study is to develop the low NOx combustor by distributed reaction flame.

  • The direct injection (DI) diesel engine has become a prime candidate for future transportation needs because of its high thermal efficiency. However, nitrogen oxides (NOx) increase in the local high temperature regions and particulate matter (PM) increases in the diffusion flame region within diesel combustion. Therefore, the demand for developing hybrid system consist of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and aftertreatment system as well as diesel particulate filter (DPF) or lean NOx trap (LNT) should be applied. The variation of EGR rate due to the malfunction of EGR valve can affect not only the combustion stability of engine but also the performance of aftertreatment system. In this research, 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine was used to investigate the combustion and emission characteristics for various operating conditions with EGR. While the fuel consumption was increased with increase of EGR rate, NOx emission was improved by maximum 90% at low speed, low load operating condition. To achieve combustion stability and reliability of aftertrearment system with minimum penalty in fuel consumption and emissions, the fault diagnosis of EGR malfunction must be employed.
