  • This paper experimentally investigates the effects of oxygen-enriched air (OEA) on the running behaviors of an LPG SI engine during both start/warm-up (SW) and hot idling (HI) stages. The experiments were performed on an air-cooled, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, LPG SI engine with an electronic fuel injection system and an electrically-heated oxygen sensor. OEA containing 23% and 25% oxygen (by volume) was supplied for the experiments. The throttle position was fixed at that of idle condition. A fueling strategy was used as following: the fuel injection pulse width (FIPW) in the first cycle of injection was set 5.05 ms, and 2.6 ms in the subsequent cycles till the achieving of closed-loop control. In closed-loop mode, the FIPW was adjusted by the ECU in terms of the oxygen sensor feedback. Instantaneous engine speed, cylinder pressure, engine-out time-resolved HC, CO and NOx emissions and excess air coefficient (EAC) were measured and compared to the intake air baseline (ambient air, 21% oxygen). The results show that during SW stage, with the increase in the oxygen concentration in the intake air, the EAC of the mixture is much closer to the stoichiometric one and more oxygen is made available for oxidation, which results in evidently-improved combustion. The ignition in the first firing cycle starts earlier and peak pressure and maximum heat release rate both notably increase. The maximum engine speed is elevated and HC and CO emissions are reduced considerably. The percent reductions in HC emissions are about 48% and 68% in CO emissions about 52% and 78%; with 23% and 25% OEA, respectively, compared to ambient air. During HI stage, with OEA, the fuel amount per cycle increases due to closed-loop control, the engine speed rises, and speed stability is improved. The HC emissions notably decrease: about 60% and 80% with 23% and 25% OEA, respectively, compared to ambient air. The CO emissions remain at the same low level as with ambient air. During both SW and HI stages, intake air oxygen enrichment causes the delay of spark timing and the increased NOx emissions.

  • This study aims to identify the impacts of air quality in the Korean Peninsula according to the China's environmental policies in preparation of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The measurement of emission variations in China, aircraft measurement, and modelling were carried out. The reduction measures in Beijing, China and its emission changes resulted in $30{\sim}65%$ in decrease out of the total emissions within the Beijing region, whereas when it comes to the whole nation of China, the reduction rate was about $4{\sim}9%$. Comparing the concentration of the air pollutants in Seoul and Ganghwa in August 2008 during around the period of Beijing Olympic Games with one in $2004{\sim}2007$ showed that the $SO_2$ concentrations in the past was above 5ppb, while the concentration in the 2008 olympic period was 4ppb and below. The NOx at the Seokmori site in Ganghwa tended to be lower in concentration in 2008 than in between $2004{\sim}2007$. As for $O_3$ and $PM_{2.5}$, the concentration tended to be rather low since August 11. The air current track that showed during the period of aircraft measurement presented to be flowed into Korea through the Northeast part of China and the coast of Bohai Bay, while the concentrations of $SO_2$. NOx, and $O_3$ over the west sea on August 20 and 24 were 0.54 (0.28ppb), 0.86 (1.84ppb), and 54.0 (41.5ppb) respectively, similar or lower than the ones measured in the past in the similar current patterns. The modelling result showed similar patterns to the data of aircraft measurement, in particular in $SO_2$. Overall, the reduction measures in Beijing, China affected directly and indirectly the air quality in the Korean peninsular, but the impact was not significant as it was momentary and limited to the intended area.

  • For the development of combustion technology of RDF(refuse derived fuel), combustion characteristics are examined in bubbling fluidized bed, circulating fluidized bed, continuos combustor and batch type combustor. The characteristics of combustion and exhaust gas has been compared and analyzed in many type of combustion facilities, which has been utilized as basic data for the advanced research of specified RDF combustion facility. Stable combustion has been observed in bubbling and circulating fluidized bed from controled operating condition like the proper feeding rate and superficial gas velocity. In circulating fluidized bed, concentration of NOx has been increased with the operating condition by the fuel-NO and oxygen reaction and $SO_2$ can be considered not to be produced in RDF fluidized bed from very low concentration in flue gas. HCl concentration is 36.4 ppm as average value and lower than standard emission value, but the counter plan is needed. Shaped RDF and fluff RDF have been compared in continuos combustor and batch type combustor and shaped RDF shows benefit for the stable heat recovery and gas emission shows similar value and characteristics.

  • Currently, 90 % of the world's population breathes air with a fine dust content exceeding the World Health Organization's annual average exposure limit (10 ㎍/㎥). Global efforts have been devoted toward reducing secondary pollutants and ultra-fine dust through regulations on nitrogen oxides released over land and sea. Domestic efforts have also aimed at creating clean marine environments by reducing sulfur emissions, which are the primary cause of dust accumulation in ships, through developing and distributing environment-friendly ships. Among the technologies for reducing harmful emissions from diesel engines, electrostatic precipitator offer several advantages such as a low pressure loss, high dust collection efficiency, and NOx removal and maintenance. This study aims to increase the durability of a ship by improving equipment quality through failure mode effects analysis for the preventive maintenance of an electrostatic precipitator that was developed for reducing fine dust particles emitted from the 2,427 kW marine diesel engines in ships with a gross tonnage of 999 tons. With regard to risk priority, failure mode 241 (poor dust capture efficiency) was the highest, with an RPN of 180. It was necessary to determine the high-risk failure mode in the collecting electrode and manage it intensively. This was caused by clearance defects, owing to vibrations and consequent pin loosening. Given that pin loosening is mainly caused by vibrations generated in the hull or equipment, it is necessary to manage the position of pin loosening.

  • A MILD (Moderate and Intense Low oxygen Dilution) combustor decreases NOx formation effectively during the combustion process and NOx formation is affected significantly by the exhaust gas entrainment rate toward fuel and air. The present study focused on the new MILD combustor, which has coaxial cylindrical tube. The outside tube of the new MILD combustor corresponds to the exhaust gas passage and the inner side tube is the furnace passage. The connection pipe is set between the outer side and the inner side tubes and coaxial air nozzle is inserted at the center of the connection pipe. A numerical analysis is accomplished to elucidate the characteristics of exhaust gas entrainment toward the inner furnace with the changes of air nozzle exit velocity, nozzle diameter, nozzle exit position and exhaust gas side pressure. The entrainment rate is proportional to the square root of air nozzle exit velocity and negatively proportional to the pressure difference between the exhaust gas side and furnace side pressures. The effect of air nozzle exit position is not considerable on the exhaust gas entrainment.

  • As the severity of environmental pollution has increased, restrictions on air pollution have been strengthened. Stringent regulations have been imposed, not only on marine diesel engines but also on automotive and industrial power plants. Thus, biofuels have been directly applied in practical engines and used in training ships for basic research. Even though a high biofuel percentage cannot be used in a training ship engine for safety reasons, because this type of engine is larger than those used in institutional laboratories, the results will provide important basic information that will allow organizations to determine the status of a large output. Biodiesel fuel was studied to determine how it would affect the combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions of a marine diesel generator engine. The main results can be summarized as follows. Because the physical and chemical compositions of biofuels are similar to those of diesel fuel, it was found that their practical use was possible in a training ship. The specific fuel consumption and NOx increased, whereas a tendency was found for carbon monoxide and soot to decrease. In addition, no significant pressure change difference was found between the diesel fuel and biofuels.

  • The Miller cycle is a diesel engine that has been developed in recent years that it can reduce NOx and improve fuel consumption by reducing the compression ratio through intake valve closing (IVC) time control. The Miller cycle can be divided into the early Miller method of closing the intake valve before the bottom dead center (BDC) and the late Miller method of closing the intake valve after the BDC. At low speeds, the late Miller method is advantageous as it can increase the volumetric efficiency; while at medium and high speeds, the early Miller method is advantageous because of the high internal temperature reduction effect due to the expansion of the intake air during the piston lowering from IVC to BDC. Therefore, in consideration of the ef ects of the early and late Miller methods, it is necessary to adopt the most suitable Miller method for the operating conditions. In this study, a two-stage turbo charge system was applied to four-stroke engines and the process of enhancing the Miller effect through a reduction of the intake and exhaust valve overlap as well as the valve change adjustment mechanism were considered. As a result, the ef ects of fuel consumption and Tmax reduction were confirmed by adopting the Miller cycle with a two-stage supercharge, a reduction of valve overlap, and an increase of suction valve lift.

  • In this study, the behaviour of $SO_2$ and $NO_2$ adsorption on aminated ultrafine fibrous PP-g-AAc ion exchanger was investigated, The amount of adsorbed $SO_2$ increased with increasing the initial concentration of $SO_2$. The adsorption breakthrough time in the low concentration of $SO_2$ was faster than high concentration. The adsorption breakthrough occurred within 60 min. Approximately 80% of $SO_2$ was adsorbed below 100 ppm $SO_2$ and 90% of $SO_2$ over 100 ppm $SO_2$ respectively. The selective adsorption rate for $NO_2$ was lower than that of $SO_2$. The adsorption rate for $SO_2$ was decreased with increasing flow rate and that of $NO_2$ was 60%. The breakthrough occurred within 60 min. The adsorption rate for $SO_2$ was 92% in the 250 mL/g water content. Isotherm adsorption model for $SO_2$ was close to the Langmuir rather than Freundlich model.

  • The physicochemical properties of VOx/TiO2 catalysts with different TiO2 supports were analyzed, and SCR reactions were performed. VOx/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation using anatase TiO2, which was manufactured by Sigma Aldrich and prepared from TiOCl2 and titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) as a precursor. They are denoted as VS, VC, and VP. The specific surface area of the VS was 1/10 or less of that of the VC and VP, and the dispersibility of vanadium oxide was relatively low. As a result of XPS analysis, the ratio of adsorbed oxygen was higher in VS and VP with Ti3+ than in VC. In VC and VP, vanadium mainly existed in V4+ and V3+ states in relation to the dispersibility of vanadium oxide. The amount of adsorbed oxygen contributed more to NH3-SCR activity than vanadium oxide dispersibility below 250 ℃, while vanadium oxide dispersibility contributed more to activity beyond 300 ℃. The fast SCR activity in all three samples was the highest at NO2/NOx = 0.5, followed by VS < VC < VP samples. It was determined that the dispersibility of vanadium oxide had a significant effect on fast NH3-SCR activity.
