The goals of the paper are to understand the impact damage behavior and identify the effect of surface protective materials on impact resistance in filament wound composite pressure vessels. For these, a series of low velocity impact tests was performed on specimens cutting from the full scale pressure vessel by the instrumented impact testing machine. The specimens are classified into two types, which are with and without surface protective material. The visualization for impact damage by two different impactors is made by metallurgical microscope. Based on the impact force history and damage, the impact resistance parameters were employed, rod its validity in identifying the damage resistance of filament wound composite pressure vessel was reviewed. As the results, the impact resistance of the filament wound composites and its dependency on the surface protective material were evaluated quantitatively

The feasibility of using low cost, unpowered, unshielded dynamic microphones is investigated for cost effective contactless sensing of impact-echo signals in concrete structures. Impact-echo tests on a delaminated concrete slab specimen were conducted and the results were used to assess the damage detection capability of the low cost system. Results showed that the dynamic microphone successfully captured impact-echo signals with a contactless manner and the delaminations in concrete structures were clearly detected as good as expensive high-end air pressure sensor based non-contact impact-echo testing.

The piezoelectric thin film(PVDF: polyvinylidene fluoride) sensors having good dynamic sensing charachteristics can be used to monitor low vwlocit impact on composite structures. The impact response function for composite sandwich beam was derved. The impact tests at low energy without inducing damage were performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The measured signals of PVDF sensors attached on the surface of the beam agreed well with the simulated signals. And the inverse technique was applied to reconstruct the impact forces from the PVDF sensor signals. Most of reconstructed impact forces showed good agreement with the measured forces. The comparison results showed that the piezoelectric thin film sensor can be used to monitor the low velocity impact on composite sandwich structures.
The purpose of this research is to analyze the impact resposes(impulsive stress and strain etc.) of anisotropic materials subjected to the low-velocity impact. For this purpose, a beam finite element program based on modified higher-order beam theory for anisotropic materials are developed and used to simulate the dynamic behaviors [contact force, displacement of ball and target, strain(stress) response histories] according to the changes of material property, stacking sequence, velocity and dimension etc.. Test materials for simulation are composed of $[0^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}]_{2s} and [90^{\circ}/45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/-45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]_{2s}$ stacking sequences. Finally, the results of this simulation are compared with those of wave propagation theory and then the impact responses and wave propagation phenomena are investigated.

MADYMO human model with the detail neck was used to investigate the reaction force of neck and neck injury from rear impact directions. In the validation simulation, head acceleration, thorax acceleration and the global kinematics of the head and neck were correlated well with experimental data. Acceleration data from three 15 km/h low speed car rear impact pendulum tests(rear-end, offset, oblique) were used to simulate the model. In the simulation results, the reaction force on the facet joint and discs in the oblique rear impact were higher than rear-end, offset rear impacts. Further research is still needed in order to neck injury analysis about different crash parameters.

This paper studied the PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) and Acoustic Emission sensors characteristics of the laminated composite panels under the low velocity impact. The various impact test by changing impact height is performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The STFT(short time Fourier transform) and WT(wavelet transform) are used to decompose the each sensor signals. A ultrasonic C-scan and digital scope are used to define damaged area in each case. The test result indicated that the individual sensor signals involve the damage initiation and development.
The composite materials are widely used in the many applications of industry as well as aerospace field because of their high specific stiffness and strength which benefits the material and provides potential energy savings. However, composite materials also have a low property about external applied impact. In this paper, impact tests were conducted on different sample types(glass, carbon and kevlar composite) to obtain information such as absorbed energy and composite deformation using an instrumented impact test machine (DYNATUP 8250). 3 type samples were compared to experimental results. The data from impact test provided valuable information between the different type samples by wet lay up. This paper shows results of that kevlar composite has larger absorption energy and deformation than others.
Nowadays CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) became widely used materials for the strengthening and retrofitting of structures. Many experimental and analytical studies are encountered at literature about strengthening beams by using this kind of materials against static loads and cyclic loads such as earthquake or wind loading for investigating their behavior. But authors did not found any study about strengthening of RC beams by using CFRP against low velocity impact and investigating their behavior. For these reasons an experimental study is conducted on totally ten strengthened RC beams. Impact loading is applied on to specimens by using an impact loading system that is designed by authors. Investigated parameters were concrete compression strength and drop height. Two different sets of specimens with different concrete compression strength tested under the impact loading that are applied by dropping constant weight hammer from five different heights. The acceleration arises from the impact loading is measured against time. The change of velocity, displacement and energy are calculated for all specimens. The failure modes of the specimens with normal and high concrete compression strength are observed under the loading of constant weight impact hammer that are dropped from different heights. Impact behaviors of beams are positively affected from the strengthening with CFRP. Measured accelerations, the number of drops up to failure and dissipated energy are increased. Finite element analysis that are made by using ABAQUS software is used for the simulation of experiments, and model gave compatible results with experiments.

The piezoelectric thin film sensor can be used to interpret variations in structural and material properties, e.g. for structural integrity monitoring and assessment. To illustrate one of this potential benefit, PVDF film sensors are used for monitoring impact damage initiation in Gr/Ep composite panel. Both PVDF film sensors and strain gages are surface mounted to the Gr/Ep specimens. A series of impact test at various impact energy by changing impact mass and height is performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The sensor responses are carefully examined to predict the onset of impact damage such as matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breakage, etc. Test results show that the particular waveforms of sensor signals implying the damage initiation and development are detected above the damage initiation impact energy. As expected, the PVDF film sensor is found to be more sensitive to impact damage initiation event than the strain gage.

The potential hazards resulting from a low-velocity impact (bird-strike, tool drop, runway debris, etc.) on aircraft structures, such as engine nacelle or a leading edges, has been a long-term concern to the aircraft industry. Certification authorities require that exposed aircraft components must be tested to prove their capability to withstand low-velocity impact without suffering critical damage. In most of the past research studies unloaded specimens have been used for impact tests, however, in reality it is much more likely that a composite structure is exposed to a certain stress state when it is being impacted, which can have a significant effect on the impact performance. And the radiated impact sound induced by impact is analyzed for the damage detection evaluation. In this study, an investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effect in-plane loading on the impact force and sound of composite laminates numerically.
