Korea government declared that "low carbon, green growth" through green technologies and clean energy to be the new national vision for the next 60 years(President's Liberation Day speech on Aug. 15, 2008). And succeeding "Green New Deal" plan involves nine core projects including energy saving, recycling, clean energy development. It is because hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, using electricity from chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, let out water which is a by-product of such chemical reaction instead of emitting harmful particulate and gases such as NOX, SOX and CO2 that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and its technology are drawing public attention as one of the sensible solutions in accomplishing "low carbon, green growth" agenda. Nevertheless There are many chances that let the people have a practical experience of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Sometimes new products, including hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, made by advanced technology can not penetrate through the market when it faces public skepticism that is stimulated from lack of knowledge and experience. That is the reason why not only cost benefit analyses and scientific risk assessments but also public acceptance studies toward hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have to be performed [Schulte, 2004]. This research address a need for comprehensive study on factors influencing public acceptance of hydrogen fuel cell car, specifically focusing on impacts of personal experience related to governmental science and technology policy toward public acceptance.
Greenhouses gas emission due to usage of fossil fuel has been known as one of the main causes of global warming. Fundamentally, greenhouse gas is a by-product of economic activity. Since majority of economic activity happens in an urban setting, a countermeasure in an urban setting is needed. Therefore, an analysis of relationship between carbon dioxide emission and urban form will be investigated for urban planning and management in the future. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between carbon dioxide emission and urban spatial patterns, and suggesting an urban form with low carbon dioxide emission. In order to achieve this, first theoretical analysis was carried out on urban spatial patterns related to physical size, usage rate, and activity level. Secondly, Seoul's dam on electricity, natural gas, local heating, petroleum, and water usage and mapping a carbon dioxide emission map. Thirdly, relationship between carbon dioxide emission and urban spatial patterns are analyzed and urban spatial patterns that affects energy usage in urban setting was elucidated, and elicited implications on future directions on urban planning based on our analyses above.
Nowadays, it is necessary to accelerate the construction of new power plant in face of rising energy demand in such a way that the electricity will be generated at the lowest cost while reducing emissions caused by that generation. The expansion planning is one of the most important issues in electricity management. Nuclear energy comes forward with the low-carbon technology and increasing competitiveness to expand the share of generated energy by introducing Gen IV reactors. In this paper, the generation expansion planning of these new Gen reactors is investigated using the WASP software. Iran power grid is selected as a case of study. We present a comparison of the twenty-one year perspective on the future with the development of (1) traditional thermal power plants and Gen II reactors, (2) Gen III + reactors with traditional thermal power plants, (3) Gen IV reactors and traditional thermal power plants, (4) Gen III + reactors and the new generation of the thermal power plant, (5) the new generation of thermal power plants and the Gen IV reactors. The results show that the Gen IV reactors have the most developing among other types of power plants leading to reduce the operating costs and emissions. The obtained results show that the use of new Gen of combined cycle power plant and Gen IV reactors make the emissions and cost to be reduced to 16% and 72% of Gen II NPPs and traditional thermal power plants, respectively.
In recent years, with the rising interest to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the demand for using environmentally friendly product with low greenhouse gas emission is increasing in the printing industry as well. In this study, the carbon footprint of environmentally friendly product mineral paper that uses less plastic and wood than normal printing paper materials was analyzed by utilizing the life cycle assessment (LCA) technique. An analysis utilizing the LCA technique was done per the Korea carbon footprint certification guidelines and, for scope of study, it included the premanufacturing stage and manufacturing stage except for the use and disposal stages. As a result of the study, the emission coefficient of the mineral paper was calculated to be $0.81kg\;CO_2eq/kg$ and the emission from electricity usage of the entire greenhouse gas emission was calculated to be 45.85% ($0.37kg\;CO_2eq/kg$). In order to reduce greenhouse gas emission, required are the efforts to reduce the environmental loads by using energies that have relatively lower environmental loads, such as improvement in electricity usage efficiency and renewable energy, by increasing product completion rates during the manufacturing process of mineral paper.

In order to prohibit global warming, various kinds of regulatory policies have been established in the whole world. One example is the establishment of the Renewable Portfolio Standard. It requires the increased portion in energy production from renewable energy sources. The Republic of Korea adopted the act on the promotion of the development, use, and diffusion of new and renewable energy since 2012. However, in spite of the effort on the consideration of the renewable energy sources, it was reported the carbon intensity of electricity in Korea was not that low in 2015. Thus, it is required to examine the recent state of the utilization degree of the renewable energy sources in Korea. This paper analyzed the statistical data provided by Korea Power Exchange (KPX) to examine any problems and solutions for generating electricity from the renewable energy sources. We focused on the generation capacity provided by the power plants participated in the market, the electric power trading amount, and the utilization coefficient for 10 years. By analyzing the data, we provide an alternative to solve some imbalance among the factors contributing to renewable energy use.
This paper compares the economic effects of climate policy options in Korea. The impacts and implications of carbon and Btu tax schemes are analyzed using the META Net modeling system, which was developed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Findings indicate that carbon tax is more cost effective compared to Btu tax, but this does not necessarily mean the former is more desirable than the latter. Energy market stability and national energy security is equally important in choosing policy options. Moreover Btu tax is more effective in reducing energy consumption in general. It reduces not only carbon intensive energy sources, but non-fossil fuel like electricity. Korean economy consumes too much energy and energy efficiency is very low compared to other OECD countries. So the reduction of energy demand growth should be the first priority of the national energy policy in Korea.

A sustainability of electricity supply has emerged as a critical issue for low carbon green growth in South Korea. Wind power is the fastest growing source of renewable energy. However, due to its own intermittency and volatility, the power supply generated from wind energy has variability in nature. Hence, accurate forecasting of wind speed and power plays a key role in the effective harvesting of wind energy and the integration of wind power into the current electric power grid. This paper presents a short-term wind speed prediction method based on support vector regression. Moreover, particle swarm optimization is adopted to find an optimum setting of hyper-parameters in support vector regression. An illustration is given by real-world data and the effect of model regularization by particle swarm optimization is discussed as well.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have attracted much attention because of their moderate light-to-electricity conversion efficiency, easy fabrication, and low cost. At present, platinum (Pt) is used as a counter electrode in DSSCs. However, it is found that Pt dissolves in iodide electrolyte solutions and creates chemical compound such as PtI4 and H2PtI6. Carbon based materials are one of candidates for a counter electrode of DSSCs. We prepare two types of graphite oxides by different chemical treatments; original graphite oxide, hydrazine treated graphite oxide. Each graphite oxide and magnesium nitrate dispersed in deionized water are prepared as solutions for electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Each graphite oxide electrode is deposited on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate by EPD method. Structural and electrochemical properties of each electrode are investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, respectively.

Integrated Coal Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants have been developed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and to increase the efficiency of electricity generation. A devolatilization process of entrained coal gasification is predicted by CPD model which could describe the devolatilization behavior of rapidly heated coal based on the chemical structure of the coal. This paper is intended to compare the mass release behavior of char, tar and gas(CO, $CO_2,\;H_2O,\;CH_4$) for three different coals. The influence of coal structure on gas evolution is examined over the pressure range of 10${\sim}$30atm.

A sustainable production of electricity is essential for low carbon green growth in South Korea. The generation of wind power as renewable energy has been rapidly growing around the world. Undoubtedly wind energy is unlimited in potential. However, due to its own intermittency and volatility, there are difficulties in the effective harvesting of wind energy and the integration of wind power into the current electric power grid. To cope with this, many works have been done for wind speed and power forecasting. It is reported that, compared with physical persistent models, statistical techniques and computational methods are more useful for short-term forecasting of wind power. Among them, support vector regression (SVR) has much attention in the literature. This paper proposes an SVR based wind speed forecasting. To improve the forecasting accuracy, a fuzzy clustering is adopted in the process of SVR modeling. An illustrative example is also given by using real-world wind farm dataset. According to the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method provides better forecasts of wind power.
