  • The trends of recent passenger ships are becoming speedy and luxury style to enhance comfortableness in cabin. In order to meet these trend, ship designer has to improve the sound quality as well as to reduce the sound pressure level in cabins. In this paper, the trend of noise and sound quality of real high-speed coastal passenger ships are measured and analyzed, while running on their regular courses. The sound quality parameters such as loudness, roughness, fluctuation strength, and sharpness are evaluated by Zwicker loudness calculation. In addition, we try to find sensitive critical frequency band for the improving sound quality by using signal editing. Finally, the expected effective design methods are proposed to designer for the improving sound quality of passenger ships.

  • Floor impact noise has been evaluated by investigating the temporal and spectral characteristics of the noise. The noises generated by different impactors were analyzed to find out whether there is any correlation with the factors of ACF /IACF (Autocorrelation Function/Inter-aural Cross-correlation Function) [1] and Zwicker parameters [2]. Experiments were undertaken to compare the objective and subjective parameters of the floor impact noises generated by a bang/tapping machine, a rubber ball [3], and a walker. As a result, it was found that $\phi$ (0) and IACC extracted from ACF/IACF, and Loudness, Unbiased Annoyance from Zwicker parameters showed high correlation with subjective evaluations of loudness concerning floor impact noises. In addition, it was revealed that jumping is similar to the ball.

  • Interior noise, engine speed and vehicle speed are measured under transient road-load condition and interior noise signal is transformed by using the transient signal analysis methods, such as the spectrogram and wavelet transform. Using the analyzed results, subjective noise metrics such as the loudness, sharpness and articulation index at each vehicle speed can be estimated and characteristics of interior noise for various running modes can be discussed in the viewpoint of noise quality.

  • A standard on talker echo for ISDN telophone, mainly consisting of those on sending and receiving loudness ratings and terminal coupling loss(TCL), is necessary. Accordingly, if sending and receiving loudness ratings are pre-determined, we need a standard on TCL providing echo-free telephone communications to telephone users, and the standard can be classified into that weighted TCL($TCL_w$) and that on stability loss. In this paper, in order to make a national standard on TCL, based on users' perceived quality on a talker echo, we conducted user opinion tests on talker echo. From the results of correlation between echo and user opinion on quality and measurement on TCL of telephones, we proposed the standard as follows; we must preserve TCL_w of at least 40dB and stability loss of at least 10dB when overall loudness rating for ISDN telephone, sum of sending and receiving loudness ratings, is normalized to 10dB.

  • Recently, it becomes to be very important to reduce the cabin noise of passenger ship, according to the trend of speedy and luxury ship. The noise reduction and control techniques should be considered as important factors from the viewpoint of the sound problem of cabin. Therefore, ship designer has to improve the sound quality as well as to redece the sound pressure level in cabins. In this paper, for the new approach of these problems, we tried to find the trends of noise and sound quality of high-speed coastal passenger ships. Loudness, roughness, fluctuation strength, and sharpness are selected as the parameters for the evaluation of sound quality. The parameters are calculated by using the sound measured in cabin while the ship is running. Furthermore we tried to find the trend of each parameter in cabins and compare with that of sound pressure level. As results, we find that the loudness is linearly proportional to sound pressure level. But, the other parameters show different trends which may be caused by ship motion on the wave and fluctuation of propelling power.

  • Motor noise is a major concern in order to improve perceptual feeling of car interior sound due to increased motor usage in passenger cars. The purpose of this study is to propose factors that can represent the acoustic performance of motor noise according to the change of load. To this end, at first, it is shown that power spectrum and total loudness are not fit for noise performance, and then, PNB, partial loudness related to the brush friction component, and PNR, partial loudness related to the torque ripple component are investigated as factors representing motor noise. The performance curve of motor noise using PNB and PNR is proposed to identify trends of motor noise according to the loads. The curve could be a guide for the noise control, the selection of motor, and the improvement of a system.

  • In this paper, the method to improve audio noise when GMS(Global System of Mobile Communication) is built in HPC(Handheld PC)is provided. The biggest problem with quality of audio is improved by connecting GSM module with wire to the widest erea near by HPC Power Ground to reduce impedance difference, and designing amplifier and earpiece, Result of measurement is satisfied with GSM Acoustic Standard. Standard of GSM Audio is declared in GSM 11.10 ETS 300 607-1. Measuring items corresponds to that standard and B&K Type 6712 is used for measurement. The list of measurement presented in this paper is Sending Sensitivity Frequency Response and SLR, Sending Loudness Rating( SLR level), Receiving Sensitivity Loudness Rating(RLR level), Talker Sidetone(STMR), Stability margin, and Echo Loss(ERL)

  • The loudness dependence of the auditory evoked potential (LDAEP) has been proposed as a valid biomarker of central serotoninergic activity in humans. The specificity and sensitivity of the LDAEP to changes in serotonergic neurotransmission have recently been explored in many studies about pharmacology and genetics. The majority of evidence for an association between the LDAEP and serotonin activity has come from animal studies. Genetic association studies with the LDAEP have provided conflicting reports with additional evidence outlining sensitivity to other neurotransmitter systems including the dopamine and glutamatergic systems. The LDAEP has been revealed to reflect the pathophysiology of various psychiatric illnesses. There is supporting evidence that major psychiatric disorders have differential LDAEP activities. Overall, the LDAEP shows strong evidence as a potential predictor of antidepressant treatment response. It need to be explored whether the LDAEP could be a biological marker of various psychiatric diseases and treatment prediction of antidepressants and serotonin related drugs.

  • This paper is to provide the basic way of a acoustical evaluation and efficient control noise by investigating the limits of perceptual loudness of living environment and by finding out any correlation between Physical characteristics of noise and psychoacoustic parameters. The limits of perceptual loudness were selected by the subjects in a chamber for residential and working environment. And the noise sources were analyzed to find out whether there is any correlation with Zwicker parameters and ACF factors. In this study especially, to set up the domestic evaluation grade about floor impact noise. we'd like to suggest the loudness Perception research result as fundamental resource for setting up the evaluation grade through the result that is based on annoyance. In the result of this research, upper limit of heavy-weight impact noise was L-60, and lower limit of it was L-50. On the other hand, upper limit of light-weight impact noise was L-70, and lower limit of it was L-55. It seemed that the loudness of noise from vacuum cleaner noise does not affect its perceived noisiness. Noises implicated In human such as floor walking noise and talking sound, are the most irritating noise in office environment.

  • Recently, drivers have begun to regard comfort in the cabin as one of the most important factors in construction equipment like forklifts. Accordingly, it has become more important to design a forklift cabin with a better sound quality as well as lower sound level, which can make a driver more comfortable. In this paper, the correlation between subjective evaluation and Zwicker's sound quality index was analyzed through a blind test by a few workers in forklifts and other construction equipment in several countries. Correlation analysis showed that Loudness and Sharpness were ranked in sequence, and tendencies were different from country to country. Also, contribution analysis for Loudness and Sharpness using operational transfer path analysis (OTPA), which is widely used in the field of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), was performed. However, Loudness and Sharpness cannot be used with OTPA directly because there are no linear relationships between the sources and receivers. In this paper, both are calculated by applying the DIN 45631 method with a contribution rate (%) of 1/3 Octave Sound Pressure Level by OTPA method in addition to considering spectral masking.
