  • This paper introduces a new algorithm to improve compression performance of 256 color images called palette-based or indexed images. The proposed scheme counts each frequency of index values after present index value and determines each rank for every index value by sorting them in descending order. Then, the scheme makes ranked index image instead of original indexed image using the way to replace index values with ranks. In the ranked index image's distribution produced as a result of this algorithm, the higher ranked index value, the more present same values. Therefore, data redundancy will be raised and more efficient performance of compression can be expected. Simulation results verify that because of higher compression ratio by up to 22.5, this newly designed algorithm shows a much better performance of compression in comparison with the arithmetic coding, intensity-based JPEG-LS and palette-based GIF.

  • In this paper, using ranks of co-occurrence frequency about indices in neighboring pixels, we introduce a new re-indexing scheme for efficiency of index color image lossless compression. The proposed method is suitable for arithmetic coding because it has skewed distributions of small variance. Experimental results proved that the proposed method reduces the bit rates than other coding schemes, more specifically 15%, 54% and 12% for LZW algorithm of GIF, the plain arithmetic coding method and Zeng's scheme.

  • In this papr, a new lossless compression method is presented based on the Binary Adaptive Arithmetic Coder(BAAC). A simple unbalanced binary tree is created by recursively dividing the BAAC unit interval into two probability sub-inervals. On the tree the More Probable Predicted Value(MPPV) and Less Probable Predicated Value(LPPV) estimated by local statistics of the image pixels are arranged in decreasing order. The BAAC or Huffman coder is thus applied to the branches of the tree. The proposed method allows the coder be directly applied to the full bit-plane medical image without a decomposition of the full bit-planes into a series of binary bit-planes. The use of the full bit model template improves the compresion ratio. In addition, a fast computation for adjusting the interval is possible since a simple arithmetic operation based on probability interval estimation state machine is used for interval sub-division within the BAAC unit interval.

  • In this paper, we propose a lossless compression algorithm using adaptive DPCM(Differential Pulse Coded Modulation) for enhancing the compression ratio. To improve the compression efficiency, various DPCM modification algorithms have been proposed. Proposed algorithm presents 16 DPCM methods and adaptively selects the DPCM method for each block. The experimental results show that proposed DPCM algorithm has better performance on compression ratio than JPEG standard.

  • The diagnostic medical images(CT, MRI) in PACS require large storage and long transmission time. A simple and cheap way of overcoming these limitations is to increase the compression ratio. However, this requires a clinical validation for accurate diagnostic applications. The aim of this paper is to improve the compression efficiency of lossless JPEG2000 for diagnostic CT images by performing a visual-Iossless threshold filtering in high frequency subband. A proposed method, based on 5/3 reversible DWT, provides different subband-threshold values according to the compression ratio and gives the high subjective quality to reconstructed diagnostic CT images.

  • In this paper, an efficient lossless compression algorithm using motion adaptation is proposed. It is divided into two parts: a motion adaptation based nonlinear predictor part and a residual data coding part. The proposed nonlinear predictor can reduce prediction error by learning from its past prediction errors using motion adaption. The predictor decides the proper selection of the intra and inter prediction values according to the past prediction error. The reduced error is coded by existing context adaptive coding method. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has the higher compression ratio than context modeling methods, such as FELICS, CALIC, and JPEG-LS.

  • This paper analyzed the JPEG compression performance of MTSAT-1R(Multi-functional Transport Satellite - 1 Replacement), which is offering the LRIT/HRIT(Low Rate Information Transmissio / High Rate Information Transmission) service now, in order to design the system regarding LRIT/HRIT of COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite). To do so, we analysed Lossy and Lossless JPEG compression performance regarding the MTSAT-1R LRIT/HRIT data for 10 days, and made comparison to the image characteristics, and understood the JPEG compression characteristics regarding JPEG compression of geostationary meteorological satellite. This result of compression performance analysis is expected to be a reference not only to the system design and realization of COMS LRIT/HRIT but also to those who develop other meteorological satellite receiving systems.

  • For efficient storage and transmission of medical images, the requirement of image com pression is increasing. Because differences between reconstructed images and original images are related with errors In the diagnosis, lossless compression is generally preferred in mod- ical images. in Run Length Coding which is one of the lossless compression method, we have applied modified scanning direction based on the Hilbert curve, which is a kind of space fill ins curve. We have substituted the traditional raster scanning by Hilbert curve direction scanning. Using this method, we have studied enhancement of compression efficiency for medical images.

  • The textual image compression by pattern matching is a coding scheme that exploits the correlations between patterns. When we compress the Hangul (Korean character) text by patern matching, the collerations between patterns may decrease due to randoem contacts between phonemes. Therefore in this paper we separate connected phonemes to exploit effectively the corrlation between patterns by inducting the amtch. In the process of sequation, we decide whether the patterns have vowel component or not, and then vowels connected with consonant ae separated. When we compare the proposed algorithm with the existing algorith, the compression ratio is increased by 1.3%-3.0% than PMS[5] in lossy mode, by 3.4%-9.1% in lossless mode than that of SPM[7] which is submitted to standard committe for second generation binary compression algorithm.
