This paper analyzes the characteristics of packet losses in mobile computing environments based on the Gilbert model and then describes a mechanism that can recover the lost audio packets using redundant data. Using information periodically reported by a receiver, the sender dynamically adjusts the amount and offset values of redundant data with the constraint of minimizing the bandwidth consumption of wireless links. Since mobile computing environments can be often characterized by frequent and consecutive packet losses, loss recovery mechanism need to deal efficiently with both random and consecutive packet losses. To achieve this, the suggested mechanism uses relatively large, discontinuous exponential offset values. That gives the same effect as using both the sequential and interleaving redundant information. To verify the effectiveness of the mechanism, we extended and implemented RTP/RTCP and applications. The experimental results show that our mechanism, with an exponential offset, achieves a remarkably low complete packet loss rate and adapts dynamically to the fluctuation of the packet loss pattern in mobile computing environments.

This paper aims to adjust the window size according to the network condition that the sender determines by making the receiver participating in the congestion levels. TCP-RLDM has the measurement-based transmission strategy based on the data-receiving rate complementing TCP with the property of Additive Increase / Multiplicative Decrease. The protocol can make an performance improvement by responding differently according to the property of errors-whether congestion losses or transient transmission errors - to confront dynamically in heterogeneous environments with wired or wireless networks and delay-sensitive or -tolerant applications. By collecting data-receiving rate and the cause of errors from the receiver and by enabling sender to use the congestion avoidance strategy before occuring congestion possibly, the protocol works well at variable network environments.

A zero vector selection method to reduce switching losses for model predictive control (MPC) of voltage source inverter is proposed. A conventional MPC of voltage source inverter has not been proposed, and a method to select the redundancy of the zero vector is required for this study. In this paper, the redundancy of the zero vectors is selected with generating a zero sequence voltage to reduce switching losses. The zero vector of 2-level inverter is determined by determining sign of the zero sequence voltage. In the proposed method, the quality of the current is retained and switching loss can be reduced compared with the conventional method. This result was verified by P-sim simulation and experiments.

Recent trends in high-power-density applications have highlighted the importance of designing power converters with high-frequency operation. However, conventional LLC resonant converters present limitations in terms of high-frequency driving due to switching losses during the turn-off period. Switching losses are caused by the overlap of the voltage and current during this period, and can be decreased by reducing the switch voltage. In turn, the switch voltage can be reduced through a series connection of four switches, and additional circuitry is essential for balancing the voltage of each switch. In this work, a three-level LLC resonant converter that can operate at high frequency is proposed by reducing switch losses and balancing the voltages of all switches with only one capacitor. The voltage-balancing principle of the proposed circuit can be extended to n-level converters, which further reduces the switch voltage stress. As a result, the proposed circuit is applicable to high-input applications. To confirm the validity of the proposed circuit, theoretical analysis and experimental verification results from a 350 W-rated prototype are presented.
Conventional boost-full-bridge and boost-hybrid-bridge two-stage inverters are widely applied in order to adapt to the wide dc input voltage range of photovoltaic arrays. However, the efficiency of the conventional topology is not fully optimized because additional switching losses are generated in the voltage conversion so that the input voltage rises and then falls. Moreover, the electrolytic capacitors in a dc-link lead to a larger volume combined with increases in both weight and cost. This paper proposes a higher efficiency inverter with time-sharing synchronous modulation. The energy transmission paths, wheeling branches and switching losses for the high-frequency switches are optimized so that the overall efficiency is greatly improved. In this paper, a contrastive analysis of the component losses for the conventional and proposed inverter topologies is carried out in MATLAB. Finally, the high-efficiency under different switching frequencies and different input voltages is verified by a 3 kW prototype.
The power flow calculations are the most important and powerful tools in the various studies of power system engineering. Newton-Raphson method, among the various power flow calculation techniques, is normally used due to its rapidness of numerical convergency. In the conventional Newton-Raphson method, however, there are some unrealistic assumptions, in which all the system power losses are considered to be supplied by the slack bus generator. Introducing the system power loss formula and augmenting the conventional Newton-Raphson power flow method, we can relieve the unrealistic assumption and improve the performance of power flow calculation. In this study, A new approach for handling the losses and augmenting the conventional power flow problem is proposed. The proposed method estimates the increamental changes of active power on each generation bus with respect to the change of total system power losses and the estimated value are used to update the slack bus power. If some studies for more theoritical investigations and verifications are followed, the proposed approach will show some improvement of the conventional method and give lots of contribution to increase the performance of power flow techniques in power systems engineering.
500W class MTG(Micro turbine generator) operating at 400,000 rpm is under development. From the cycle analysis, it is decided that the self-sustaining speed of MTG is 200,000rpm and the generating speed is 400,000 rpm. Therefore, motor should be designed so that it is able to rotate the rotor up to 200,000rpm and generator should designed so that it is able to generate 500W output at 400,000rpm. First step to design motor/generator is to determine the power and efficiency requirement. Not only the power into the compressor and from the turbine at the operating speed but also the mechanical and electrical losses should be considered in determining the power and efficiency requirement. This study presents the procedure and the results of determining the power and efficiency requirement considering the mechanical and electrical losses depending on the rotating speed which is measured from the experiment.
Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs) can be measured in the external ear canal two fold: amplitude and latency, but most DPOAE studies deal with amplitude aspects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the latency of the 2f1-f2 DPOAEs in ears with hearing losses and to see if it could be a clinically useful method to distinguish normal from abnormal ears. For this purpose, DPOAE latency were measured as a function of frequency from 1 to 8 kHz in 30 ears with conductive and sensorineural hearing losses (SNHLs). DPOAEs were recorded with Otodynamic Analyzer ILO92. Results showed that the latency decreased as the frequency increased up to 8 kHz. The mean values of DPOAE latency for ears of SNHLs were shorter at all frequencies when they were compared to the mean values of normal ears. The latency in ears of conductive hearing losses was shorter than normal ears at the selective frequencies, as well. The results support the hypothesis that latency values are shorter in pathological ears.

In this paper, we present an indoor propagation prediction model which is based on a three-dimensional ray-tracing technique. In this model, instead of considering all obstacles such as furnitures and fixtures, etc., only main obstacles to the propagation such as walls, ceiling and floors are modeled as slabs with finite thickness and conductivity, and the significant phenomena of propagation are considered, so we can calculate simply and predict accurately the propagation losses. The propagating rays are considered to be reflected and transmitted specularly at the boundaries of obstacles, and diffracted at edges. The reflection and transmission losses on flat obstacles are calculated by using ray tracing method, and the diffraction losses at edges are calculated by using the uniform theory of diffraction (UTD) for finite conductivity media. The results simulated for some cases by this propagation model good agree with the measured value of pathloss.

The present experimental and numerical investigations are performed for the characteristics of transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The flow field of an annulus has been numerically solved using a finite volume method. The pressure losses and Skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of water and $0.2{\%}$ aqueous solution of sodium carboximethy1 cellulose (CMC), respectively at inner cylinder rotational speed of $0{\~}600rpm$. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. Consequently the critical(axial-flow) Reynolds number decreases as the rotational speed increases. Thus, the rotation of inner cylinder promotes the early occurrence of transition due to the onset of Taylor vortices.
