This study is aimed to compare the insertion losses of periodically folded barriers which have same folded width, depth and period of arrangement but different direction of arrangement. One is vortical to the roadside and another is parallel. The pressure levels and the insertion losses at the receiving points behind finite length barriers are measured in an anechoic room by scale model test. The measured insertion losses are compared with calculated insertion losses by 3D BEM models.
Binder harvesters introduced to Korea were originally designed to be used for Japonica varieties which are highly resistant to shattering. In order to improve the performance of the binder to Indica varieties which are easily shattered and have shorter stem, mechanical modifications of the binder are inevitable. Shattering losses of the binder can be classified into two major parts; one incurred before and one after binding operations. The latter has been evaluated as great as the former. Previous studies indicated that the high discharge losses resulted from a great impact force of the discharge arm on the rice bundle during the discharge process. This study was intended to theoretically analyze the discharge mechanism of four-bar linkage. For this purpose, two commercially available binder harvesters having a four-bar linkage as a discharge mechanism were analyzed. Using the results from the motion analysis and the other structural constraints of the machines, they were modified and experimentally compared with the machines without modification to see whether any decrease in grain losses was obtained. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows: 1. The path, velocity and acceleration of discharge arm were computer analyzed by vector analysis. Using results of the analysis and intrinsic constraints of the binder, discharge mechanism was modified to reduce the impact force on bundle by discharge arm in the range where the discharge performance was not deteriorated. This modification of the discharge mechanism could be done with an aid of four-bar linkage synthesis technique. As a result, average velocity and acceleration of the discharge arm during the discharge process were reduced respectively by 19 percent and 33 percent for binder A, and 17 percent and 35 percent for binder B. 2. Through the modification of the discharge mechanism, discharge losses of binder A were reduced by 42-56 percent for Milyang 23, Poongsan and Hangang chal, and discharge losses of binder B were reduced by 13-20 percent for Milyang 23 and Poongsan. 3. Discharge losses were decreased as the bundle size became larger and the size effect on the decrease rate appeared more significant in the binders with modifications than in those without modifications.
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of diet for growing-finishing pigs with high level of non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) from by-products on nitrogen excretion and nitrogen losses from slurry during storage. Sixteen commercial crossbred barrows of about 68 kg BW were randomly allotted to one of four diets. The control diet was formulated using tapioca and rice as basal energy sources. In the other diets, tapioca was replaced by either coconut expellar, rice bran or beer by-product. The diets differed mainly in the amount and compostition of NSP. After a 12-day adaptation period, urine and faeces were collected separately in metabolism cages for 9 days. Urine and faeces from the first four days were used to analyse the nitrogen partitioning. Urine and faeces from the last 5 days were mixed as slurry. The slurry was sampled at the end of the collection period and again after 30 days storage, to analyse for nitrogen to calculate the losses. Increasing dietary NSP reduced urinary nitrogen and nitrogen losses from the slurry during storage. The pigs fed the diet based on beer by-product excreted the most nitrogen via faeces and the least nitrogen via urine. Nitrogen losses from slurry of pigs fed the beer by-product were from 34 to 65% lower than from the other three diets. It is concluded that including NSP-rich by-products in the diet of growing-finishing pigs reduces urinary nitrogen excretion and nitrogen losses from slurry during storage.
The transport of cargoes carried by coastal and ocean-going vessels has increased with the rapid growth of the Korean economy these days. This increase of the sea-borne cargoes has made the Korean coastal traffic so congested that this can be a cause of large pollution as well as great marine casualties such as loss of human lives and properties. Marine casualties generally result from the complicated interaction of natural and human factors; the former being the topographic, marine traffic volume and meteorological conditions, and the latter being the quality of seafares. In this paper, the authors analyse the trend of marine casualties in the Korean coastal and clear up the cause of accidents and examine closely the mutual relations among sea accidents, weather conditions, and marine traffic volume. These accidents are classified into several patterns on hte point of view of ship's size, ship's type and ship's age and its characteristics of each pattern are described in detail. Also, the authors estimate the amount of economical losses resulting from marine casualties which are classified into the accident patterns, and clarify the effects of those losses on B/B(Balance Sheet) and P/L(Profit & Loss) of Korean shipping companies and Korean national economy. The analyzed results of marine casualties are summarized as follows: 1) The average number of sea accidents is 248 cases per year with the loss of 107 persons during last 13 years. 2) Collision is the top of causes of sea accidents (approx. 36.4%), shipwreck the second (approx. 20.3%), agroung the third rank (approx. 18.2%). 3) The ship's number under 1, 000G/T is approx. 74% of total ship's number of accidents. 4) 80% of total number of marine accidents is taken plact at the coastal waters. (involved ports & narrow channels) 5) Marine casualties are occur likely to in the night, the winter and the summer. 6) The average amount of economical losses is approx. 18.5 billion won. (approx. 0.14% of GNP) 7) Shipwreck is the top of the amount of economical losses (approx. 60.4%), collision the second (aprox. 24.5%), aground the third (approx. 9.9%). 8) The amount of economical losses is approx. 5.24% of gross capital of shipping co., 1.24% of shipping revenue, 1.38% of shipping total income in 1983.
A numerical investigation has been conducted to find the effects of pressure losses by struts and rakes, and averaging methods on the performance of a multi-stage axial fan and a multi-stage axial compressor. Struts and rakes which produce pressure losses are installed upstream of the aerodynamic inlet plane in the fan and the compressor rigs. Some of normal stator vanes are substituted with thick vanes with total pressure probes to measure total pressure between stages. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier- Stokes equations with $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model were applied to analyze the pressure losses by the struts, inlet rakes, and thick instrumented vanes. The hexahedral grids were used to construct computational domain. Inlet pressure losses were evaluated for the compressor as a function of Mach number. The passage pressure losses due to the instrumented vanes were evaluated at the two speed lines in the fan. Total properties, such as pressure and temperature, were evaluated at the exit of the fan and the compressor with two different averaging methods which are area-averaging and mass-averaging, respectively.

Multiconductor transmission line(MTL) equations are solved by FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method to predict crosstalk and fields to transmission line coupling on lossy multiconductor transmission lines terminated in arbitrary linear loads. Skin effect losses as well as dc losses are included in the analysis. In order to increase computational efficiency, the convolution integral of internal impedance of conductors and the line currents is computed by using Prony method. For boundary conditions of MTLs terminated in linear loads, state-variable formulation is adopted. The simulated results by FDTD method are compared with the measured ones obtained by using TEM cell. The predictions are in good agreement with the measurements. In addition, it has been found that skin effect losses as well as dc losses of the conductors should be included for accurate predictions on relatively high loss transmission lines such as PCB. It has also been found that dc losses and skin-effect losses affect late-time responses and early-time responses, respectively.
In order to assess the effect of solar exposure on pulmonary functions and evaporative losses from skin and pulmonary surfaces, in six healthy Sahiwal (S) and six Sahiwal ${\times}$ Holstein ($S{\times}H$) cattle were exposed to direct sun during summer. Breed differences were observed during exposure. Increase in sweating rate was higher in crossbreds (222%) than in Sahiwal (125%). Pre-exposure (ambient temperature, $32.6{\pm}0.85^\circ}C$, solar radiation, $0.9cal\;cm^{-2}min^{-1}$) evaporative loss from skin accounted for about 90% of the losses and remaining losses were contributed by pulmonary surfaces in Sahiwal. The contribution of evaporation through skin increased to 92% (ambient temperature $39.4{\pm}0.68^\circ}C$, solar radiation, $1.35cal\;cm^{-2}min^{-1}$). In crossbreds 80% of the evaporative losses were through skin before exposure which increased to 87% after exposure to solar radiations. Rectal temperature increase was higher in crossbreds ($1.5^{\circ}C$) than in Sahiwal ($0.8^{\circ}C$). With the increase in pulmonary evaporative losses, respiratory frequency increased to 2 fold in Sahiwal and pulmonary ventilation increased 1.6 times the resting value in Sahiwal due to solar exposure. In $S{\times}H$ crossbreds the respiratory frequency increased 3.5 times and pulmonary ventilation increased only to 1.8 times due to decrease in tidal volume. There was about 2 fold increase in alveolar ventilation in both the breeds, the increase in dead space ventilation was more in crossbreds than in Sahiwal. Behavioral symptoms exhibited by animals after exposure were profuse salivation, open mouth panting, tongue protrusion and general restlessness.

In this paper, we present an analytical method that provides fast and efficient evaluation of the power losses and the conversion efficiency for phase-shift controlled full-bridge converter. In the proposed method, the conduction losses are evaluated by calculating the effective values of the ideal current waveform first and incorporating them into an exact equivalent circuit model of the phase-shift controlled full-bridge converter that includes all the parasitic resistances of the circuit components. While the conduction losses are accurately accounted for the synchronous rectification, the core losses are assumed to be negligible in order to simplify the analysis. The validity and accuracy of the proposed method are verified with experiments on a prototype phase-shift controlled full-bridge converter. An excellent correlation between the experiments and theories are obtained for the input voltages of 400V, output voltage 12V and maximum power 720W.
Voltage source inverters (VSIs) are widely used to drive induction motors in industry applications. The quality of output waveforms depends on the switching sequences used in pulse width modulation (PWM). In this work, all existing optimal space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) switching strategies are studied. The performance of existing SVPWM switching strategies is optimized to realize a tradeoff between quality of output waveforms and switching losses. This study generalizes the existing optimal switching sequences for total harmonic distortions (THDs) and switching losses for different modulation indexes and reference angles with a parameter called quality factor. This factor provides a common platform in which the THDs and switching losses of different SVPWM techniques can be compared. The optimal spatial distribution of each sequence is derived on the basis of the quality factor to minimize harmonic current distortions and switching losses in a sector; the result is the minimum ripple loss SVPWM (MRSLPWM). By employing the sequences from optimized switching maps, the proposed method can simultaneously reduce THDs and switching losses. Two hybrid SVPWM techniques are proposed to reduce line current distortions and switching losses in motor drives. The proposed hybrid SVPWM strategies are MRSLPWM 30 and MRSLPWM 90. With a low-cost PIC microcontroller (PIC18F452), the proposed hybrid SVPWM techniques and the quality of output waveforms are experimentally validated on a 2 kVA VSI based on a three-phase two-level insulated gate bipolar transistor.
Step-drawdown test is one of the widely-used aquifer test methods to evaluate aquifer and well losses. Various approaches have been suggested to estimate well losses using the step-drawdown test data but the uncertainties associated with data interpretation and analysis still exist. In this study, we applied three different step-drawdown test analysis methods -Jacob (1947), Labadie and Helweg (1975), Gupta (1989)- to the step-drawdown test data in Seobu-myeon, Hongseong-gun, South Korea and estimated aquifer and well losses. Comparisons of different step-drawdown test analysis methods revealed that the estimated well losses showed different values depending on the applied methods and these variations are likely to be related to the limitation of the assumptions for each analysis method. Based on the detailed analysis of time-drawdown data, we performed step-drawdown test analysis after removing outlier data during the initial stage of step drawdown test. The results showed that the application of the revised time-drawdown data could substantially decrease the error of the analysis as well as the variations in the estimated well losses from different analysis methods.
