  • In this paper, we research a new method for efficiency improvement of a single-phase Induction motor by minimization of the stator loss. To make this, we perform winding design which is based on balanced and quasi-balanced operation condition. It gives efficiency improvement greatly but poor starting torque simultaneously. To obtain the best efficiency improvement maintaining the maximum and starting torque, the optimal winding specification and rotor dimension is determined with variation of secondary resistance, running capacitor and turn ratio. Finally, this paper gives the comparison between the simulation results and experimental results.

  • This paper presents an optimal routing algorithm (ORA) for maximizing voltage stability as well as for minimizing power loss in radial power systems. In the proposed ORA, a novel voltage stability index (VSI) for real-time assessment is newly introduced based on the conventional critical transmission path framework. In addition, the suggested algorithm can automatically detect the critical transmission paths resulting in voltage collapse when additional real or reactive loads are added. To implement an effective ORA, we have developed an improved branch exchange (IBE) method based on a loss calculation index and tie-branch power flow equations, which are suggested for real-time applications. The proposed algorithm has been tested with IEEE test systems as well as a large-scale power system in Korea to demonstrate its effectiveness and efficiency.

  • This paper presents an efficient algorithm for loss reduction of distribution system by automatic sectionalizing switch operation in large scale distribution systems of radial type. Simulated Annealing algorithm among optimization techniques can avoid escape from local minima by accepting improvements in cost, but the use of this algorithm is also responsible for an excessive computation time requirement. To overcome this major limitation of Simulated Annealing algorithm, we may use advanced Simulated Annealing algorithm. All constaints are divided into two constraint group by using perturbation mechanism and penalty factor, so all trail solutions are feasible. The polynomial-time cooling schedule is used which is based on the statistics calculation during the search. This approaches results in saving CPU time. Numerical examples demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

  • In this paper, the load balancing which is one of the distribution power system's operation purposes was studied. Reconfiguration of Distribution power system presents that the configuration is changed by changing the switch on/off status which exists in the system according to the mentioned purpose. Through this method, the load of distribution power system is shown to be balanced. As a characteristic of complicated distribution power system, system is designed by being applied by OOP(Object Oriented Programming) method which connected more flexibly than existing Procedural Programming method, and the process of calculating the distflow and the loss of configurated system is shown. In addition, this paper suggests more efficient method compared by the results of reconfiguration on the purpose of the loss minimization and by the result of distribution power system reconfiguration on the purpose of load balancing. Moreover, it searches for the method to approach the global optimal solution more quickly.

  • In this paper, a tie-plate shape is optimized by using the numerical technique to reduce the stray load loss of the tie-plate which is a mechanical structure for assembling and supporting of the transformer core. The eddy current loss of the structure is calculated by an electromagnetic field FEM program and the results are compared with 4 different shapes of tie-plates. Since the thickness of the tie-plate is very thin, and the skin depth is very small, the number of FE elements for 3-D transformer model is too big to solve. So, the surface impedance boundary condition (SIBC) is used to reduce the system matrix size and its computing time. To verify the method a 2.5 MVA 22,900/380V distribution transformer is simulated using one objective function and three design variables with some constraints. The final optimized tie-plate has three slots of 6 mm width and 23 mm gap, and the loss is reduced by 75 %. Consequently, the proposed algorithm seems to be considerably applicable to electric machinery as well as power transformer.

  • This study performs optimization of paper mill scheduling using MINLP(Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming) method and 2-step decomposing strategy. Paper mill process is normally composed of five units: paper machine, coater, rewinder, sheet cutter and roll wrapper/ream wrapper. Various kinds of papers are produced through these units. The bottleneck of this process is how to cut product papers efficiently from raw paper reel and this is called trim loss problem or cutting stock problem. As the trim must be burned or recycled through energy consumption, minimizing quantity of the trim is important. To minimize it, the trim loss problem is mathematically formulated in MINLP form of minimizing cutting patterns and trim as well as satisfying customer's elder. The MINLP form of the problem includes bilinearity causing non-linearity and non-convexity. Bilinearity is eliminated by parameterization of one variable and the MINLP form is decomposed to MILP(Mixed-Integer Linear programming) form. And the MILP problem is optimized by means of the optimization package. Thus trim loss problem is efficiently minimized by this 2-step optimization method.

  • The assortment problem with deterministic demand has been formulated so that a dynamic programming can be applied to find optimal production lengths that will minimize the sum of cutting losses. The original minimization problem can be reformulated as the maximization problem with a different objective function. This problem can be solved by the dynamic programming technique. A numerical example illustrates this approach. The ratio of computation amount of emumeration method to that of this dynamic programming is approximately n to 1.
