Applicability of the Wind Erosion Prediction System for prediction of soil loss by wind in arable land

  • The precise estimation of accelerated soil wind erosion that can cause severe economic and environmental impacts still has not been achieved to date. The objectives of this investigation were to verify the applicability of a Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS) that expressed the soil loss as mass per area for specific areas of interest on a daily basis for a single event in arable lands. To this end, we selected and evaluated the results published by Hagen in 2004 and the soil depth converted from the mass of soil losses obtained by using the WEPS. Hagen's results obtained from the WEPS model followed the 1 : 1 line between predicted and measured value for soil losses with only less than 2 kg·m-2 whereas the values between the measured and predicted loss did not show any correlation for the given field conditions due to the initial field surface condition although the model provided reasonable estimates of soil loss. Calculated soil depths of the soil loss by wind for both the observed and predicted ones ranged from 0.004 to 3.113 cm·10 a-1 and from 0 to 2.013 cm·10 a-1, respectively. Comparison of the soil depths between the observed and predicted ones did not show any good relationship, and there was no soil loss in the predicted one while slight soil loss was measured in the observed one. Therefore, varying the essential model inputs and factors related to wind speed and soil properties are needed to accurately estimate soil loss for a given field in arable land.

Estimation of Soil Loss Due to Cropland Increase in Hoeryeung, Northeast Korea (북한 회령지역의 농경지 변화에 따른 토양침식 추정)

  • This study analyses the soil loss due to cropland increase in the Hoeryeung area of northeast Korea, using Landsat images of 1987 TM and 2001 ETM, together with DTED, soil and geological maps, and rainfall data of 20 years. Items of land cover and land use were categorized as cropland, settlement, forest, river zone, and sand deposit by supervised classification with spectral bands 1, 2 and 3. RUSLE model is used for estimation of soil loss, and AML language for calculation of soil loss volumes. Fourier transformation method is used for unification of the geographical grids between Landsat images and DTED. GTD was selected from 1:50,000 topographic map. Main sources of soil losses over 100 ton/year may be the river zone and settlement in the both times of 1987 and 2001, but the image of the 2001 shows that sources areas have developed up to the higher mountain slopes. In the cropland average, increases of hight and gradient are 24m and $0.8^{\circ}$ from 1987 to 2001. In the case of new developed cropland, average increases are 75m and $2.5^{\circ}$, and highest soil loss has occurred at the elevation between 300 and 500m. The soil loss 57 ton of 1987 year increased 85 ton of 2001 year. Soil loss is highest in $30{\sim}50^{\circ}$ slope zones in both years, but in 2001 year, soil loss increased under $30^{\circ}$ zones. The size of area over 200 ton/year, indicating higher risk of landslides, have increased from $28.6km^2$ of 1987 year to $48.8km^2$ of 2001 year.

An Experimental Study on the Prospect Theory (전망이론에 관한 실험연구)

  • This paper performed an experimental study to test the validity of the prospect theory proposed by Tversky and Kahneman as an alternative to the expected utility theory. 115 college students attended the hypothetical games to choose one of two lotteries, one is safe option while the other one is risky. The risky options were set up to have low, medium or high probability of payoffs or losses. The amount of payoffs and losses of the lotteries was either large or small. Maximum likelihood estimation of the hypothetical games have shown that in case of high probability of positive payoffs the respondents were risk averse and when the probability of positive payoffs were small the respondents were risk loving. when the possibility of loss is high they were risk loving, while the probability is of loss is low the respondents were found to be risk averse. When the probability of risky options were medium the results were significant statistically in case of only losses. The amount of positive payoff or losses does not affect the results. Overall the results of this experiments support the prospect theory more than those of Laury & Holts (2008).

Bandwidth-Efficient OFDM Transmission with Iterative Cyclic Prefix Reconstruction

  • For orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), cyclic prefix (CP) should be longer than the length of channel impulse response, resulting in a loss of bandwidth efficiency. In this paper, we describe a new technique to restore the cyclicity of the received signal when the CP is not sufficient for OFDM systems. The proposed technique efficiently restores the cyclicity of the current received symbol by adding the weighted next received symbol to the current received symbol. Iterative CP reconstruction (CPR) procedure, based on the residual intersymbol interference cancellation (RISIC) algorithm, is analyzed and compared to the RISIC. In addition, we apply the CPR method to Alamouti space-time block coded (STBC) OFDM system. It is shown that in the STBC OFDM, tail cancellation as well as cyclic reconstruction of the CPR procedure should be repeated. The computational complexities of the RISIC, the proposed CPR, the RISIC with STBC, and the proposed CPR with STBC are analyzed and their performances are evaluated in multipath fading environments. We also propose an iterative channel estimation (CE) method for OFDM with insufficient CP. Further, we discuss the CE method for the STBC OFDM system with the CPR. It is shown that the CPR technique with the proposed CE method minimizes the loss of bandwidth efficiency due to the use of CP, without sacrificing the diversity gain of the STBC OFDM system.

  • Soil erosion is a natural process and has been occurring in most areas in the watershed. However, accelerated soil erosion rates have been causing numerous environmental impacts in recent years. To reduce soil erosion and sediment inflow into the water bodies, site-specific soil erosion best management practices (BMPs) need to be established and implemented. The most commonly used soil erosion model is the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), which have been used in many countries over 30 years. The Sediment Assessment Tool for Effective Erosion Control (SATEEC) ArcView GIS system has been developed and enhanced to estimate the soil erosion and sediment yield from the watershed using the USLE input data. In the last decade, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model also has been widely used to estimate soil erosion and sediment yield at a watershed scale. The SATEEC system estimates the LS factor using the equation suggested by Moore and Burch, while the SWAT model estimates the LS factor based on the relationship between sub watershed average slope and slope length. Thus the SATEEC and SWAT estimated soil erosion values were compared in this study. The differences in LS factor estimation methods in the SATEEC and SWAT caused significant difference in estimated soil erosion. In this study, the difference was -51.9%(default threshold)$\sim$-54.5%(min. threshold) between SATEEC and non-patched SWAT, and -7.8%(default threshold)$\sim$+3.8%(min. threshold) between SATEEC and patched SWAT estimated soil erosion.

A Study on the Estimation Method of Operational Delay Cost in Bus Accidents using Transportation Card Data (교통카드자료를 이용한 버스 사고 시 운행지연비용 산정 방법론에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to propose a method for the estimation of operational delay cost using transportation card data in bus accidents. Average operational delay time from bus accidents was surveyed among 12 bus companies through an interview method. Then, the operational delay cost was estimated using actual traffic accident data and transportation card data. Results showed that average loss time per bus accident was found to be 45 minutes. In addition, total occupancy of 659 was estimated for the accidents investigated using transportation card data, resulting a total loss time of 494.25 hours. An estimated operational delay cost was 186.9 thousand won per accident, which was 6.37% of social agency cost. The magnitude of this number implied that operational delay cost may have a significant impact on traffic accident cost if included.

  • The predictive equations for reservoir sedimentation rate now in use are extensively reviewed, and the equation of multiple regression type, in which the reservoir sedimentation rate is related with the watershed area and the trap-efficiency, is proposed based on the 113 irrigation reservoir resurvey data. The predictive relation so obtained proved to be a reasonable measure for the estimation of reservoir sedimentation rate. The relationship of sediment yield with the watershed area and with the reservoir trap efficiency is also analyzed. The variations of sedimentation rate and of the annual reservoir capacity loss rate was shown to heavily depend on the trap-efficiency of a reservoir. Besides, the effect of sedimentation on stream channels is confirmed and quantified based on the predictive equation derived in the present study.

Estimation of Suspended Sediment Load in Imha-Andong Watershed using SWAT Model (SWAT 모델을 이용한 임하.안동 유역의 부유사량 발생량 추정)

  • For efficient turbid water management a SWAT model was established for the Imha-Andong watershed where serious turbid water problems have frequently occurred. To evaluate soil loss combined with rainfall runoff process, the analysis focused on comparing the daily runoff discharge and concentration of suspended sediment (SS) using measured data sets. The results of annual SS load analysis for each sub-basin using the calibrated model showed that in the entire target watershed the soil loss ranged from 0.7 to 5.9 tons/ha in year 2005 and from 3.0 to 34.0 tons/ha in year 2003 when the typhoon 'Maemi' severly affected the area. In the future, it is suggest to increase model simulation accuracies supported by a long-term and extensive monitoring to enhance basin-wide suspended sediment estimation and management.

EFFECT OF OVER-EXPANSION CYCLE IN A SPARK-IGNITION ENGINE USING LATE-CLOSING OF INTAKE VALVE AND ITS THERMODYNAMIC CONSIDERATION OF THE MECHANISM

  • This paper presents further investigation into the effect of over-expansion cycle in a spark-ignition engine. On the basis of the results obtained in previous studies, several combinations of late-closing (LC) of intake valve and expansion ratio were tested using a single-cylinder production engine. A large volume of intake capacity was inserted into the intake manifold to simulate multi-cylinder engines. With the large capacity volume, LC can decrease the pumping loss and then increase the mechanical efficiency. Increasing the expansion ratio from 11 to 23.9 with LC application can produce about 13% improvement of thermal efficiency which was suggested to be caused by the increased cycle efficiency. The decrease of compression ratio from 11 to 5.5 gives little effect on the thermal efficiency if the expansion ratio could be kept constant. Thus, the expansion ratio is revealed to be a determining factor for cycle efficiency, while compression ratio is no more important, which suggests the usefulness of controlling the intake charge with intake valve closure timing. These were successfully explained by simple thermodynamic calculation and thus the mechanism could be verified by the estimation.
