Inversion in the Centering Framework

  • Birner (1998) analyzes the construction of inversion within the centering theory, claiming that the preposed constituent in the inversion structure represents the backward-looking center that connects the current utterance to the previous discourse. However, this paper refutes such a strong claim, pointing out various problems of her work. Instead, this paper argues that the preposed element in the inversion construction is merely the preferred center under the condition that the ranking of the forward-looking centers is determined by the surface word order, rather than by grammatical relations. Thus, this paper claims that the discourse function of the construction of inversion is not text development but merely prominence-giving, in the sense of Ili$\acute{c}$ (1998).

  • This study examines gender inequality in the Utopian literature through Bellamy's novelLooking Backward: 2000-1887. Boston, USA, in 2000 is an equal society in which production and distribution are performed efficiently, and everyone can work with an equal opportunity without discrimination. But a closer look at the social structure shows that housework and parenting are predominantly women's duties, and the jobs that women and men can have are differentiating. Therefore, it is hard to say that true gender equality has been achieved. In addition, we could see that there were still remnants of gender inequality, such as showing the notion of beauty judged by male standards. However, Bellamy's Looking Backward: 2000-1887 is meaningful in that it improved women's status and suggested the direction and hope of social development in the 19th century. This study further examined whether these gender inequality factors have disappeared in modern society and confirmed that there remain many gender inequality factors. Therefore, we should all work together to improve the perception of members of society and make changes in social policies so that there is no discrimination between women and men so that we can truly become a gender-equal society.

  • The value of Dongeuibogam has been officially acknowledged as a Memory of the World. However, we should not overlook the forward-looking value of Dongeuibogam in addition to its backward-looking value. For the past 200 years, Western medicine has attained great achievements in therapeutic medicine based on Descartes' mind-body dualism, which focuses on the body as a separate entity from the mind. Recently, Western medicine modified its previously one-sided track into a new orientation towards holistic mind-body medicine in recognition of the two as an organic whole. At this point in time, it is essential to draw attention to the forward-looking value of Dongeuibogam, which pioneered mind-body medicine based on the medicinal philosophy of Jing Qi Shen more than 400 years ago.

  • An aerial multi-looking camera system equips itself with five separate cameras which enables acquiring one vertical image and four oblique images at the same time. This provides diverse information about the site compared to aerial photographs vertically. However, multi-looking Aerial Camera for building a 3D spatial information don't use a large-size CCD camera, do uses a medium-size CCD camera, if acquiring forward, backward, left and right imagery of Certain objects, Aerial photographing set overlap and sidelap must be considered. Especially, Sideward-looking camera set up by the sidelap to determine whether a particular object can be acquisition Through our research we analyzed of sideward footprint and aerial photographing efficiency of Multi-view imagery by sidelap changing.

Localization of A Moving Vehicle using Backward-looking Camera and 3D Road Map (후방 카메라 영상과 3차원 도로지도를 이용한 이동차량의 위치인식)

  • In this paper, we propose a new visual odometry technique by combining a forward-looking stereo camera and a backward-looking monocular camera. The main goal of the proposed technique is to identify the location of a moving vehicle which travels long distance and comes back to the initial position in urban road environments. While the vehicle is moving to the destination, a global 3D map is updated continuously by a stereo visual odometry technique using a graph theorem. Once the vehicle reaches the destination and begins to come back to the initial position, a map-based monocular visual odometry technqieu is used. To estimate the position of the returning vehicle accurately, 2D features in the backward-looking camera image and the global map are matched. In addition, we utilize the previous matching nodes to limit the search ranges of the next vehicle position in the global map. Through two navigation paths, we analyze the accuracy of the proposed method.

Performance Analysis of Economic VaR Estimation using Risk Neutral Probability Distributions

  • Traditional value at risk(S-VaR) has a difficulity in predicting the future risk of financial asset prices since S-VaR is a backward looking measure based on the historical data of the underlying asset prices. In order to resolve the deficiency of S-VaR, an economic value at risk(E-VaR) using the risk neutral probability distributions is suggested since E-VaR is a forward looking measure based on the option price data. In this study E-VaR is estimated by assuming the generalized gamma distribution(GGD) as risk neutral density function which is implied in the option. The estimated E-VaR with GGD was compared with E-VaR estimates under the Black-Scholes model, two-lognormal mixture distribution, generalized extreme value distribution and S-VaR estimates under the normal distribution and GARCH(1, 1) model, respectively. The option market data of the KOSPI 200 index are used in order to compare the performances of the above VaR estimates. The results of the empirical analysis show that GGD seems to have a tendency to estimate VaR conservatively; however, GGD is superior to other models in the overall sense.

Topographic Phase Correction of MAl (Multiple Aperture SAR Interferometry) Interferogram (MAI (Multiple Aperture SAR Interferometry) 간섭도의 지형위상보정)

  • MAI (multiple aperture SAR interferometry) method has been recently developed to improve the measurement accuracy of along-track surface deformation. By means of split-beam SAR processing, this novel technique produces forward- and backward-looking interferograms, which are combined to generate an MAI interferogram. The along-track surface deformation can then be derived from the MAI interferogram. The achieved accuracy of the along-track surface deformation is approximately 8 cm for interferograms with a coherence of 0.6. It is commonly recognized that the topographic phase on an MAI interferogram can be ignored. However, in this paper, we have generated an MAI interferogram from an ALOS P ALSAR interferometric pair spanning the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and shown that the topographic phase distortion on the MAI interferogram can reach to about $3.45{\times}10^{-4}$ rad./m. This distortion corresponds to an along-track surface deformation of about 98 cm. We have proposed an efficient method to remove the topographic phase distortion. After correcting the distortion, the topographic phase distortion on the MAI interferogram is reduced to about $7.82{\times}10^{-6}$ rad./m. This means that the proposed method can effectively remove the topographic distortion on the MAI interferogram to improve along-track surface deformation measurement.

An Expert System for the Practical Use of the Newly Designed Freight/storage Containers (실용신안 운송 및 저장용기의 실용화를 위한 Expert System의 개발연구)

  • This work presents an expert system for the classification of a given substance and thus enabling one to select the proper container in consultation with the computer. The system consists of 34 rules and uses Micro Expert as a shell program based on backward chaining method. The prototype system will have to be under extensive test. However, its use is bound to have advantages over conventional methods, e.g. looking up in a reference book or using conventional programs with a database. Since the expert system determines the group of the given substance not by its name but by its physical and chemical properties, it is not necessary to add data items even for newly synthesized substances. The system also provides reasoning for its determination and therefore it can be used as a good package for the training of unskilled operators.

  • While conventional interferometric SAR (InSAR) technique is an excellent tool for displacement observation, it is only sensitive to one-dimensional deformation along the satellite's line-of-sight (LOS). Recently, a multiple aperture interferogram (MAI) technique has been developed to overcome this drawback. This method successfully extracted along-track displacements from InSAR data, based on split-beam InSAR processing, to create forward- and backward- looking interferograms, and was superior to along-track displacements derived by pixel-offset algorithm. This method is useful to measure along-track displacements. However, it does not only decrease the coherence of MAI because three co-registration and resampling procedures are required for producing MAI, but also is confined to a suitable interferometric pair of SAR images having zero Doppler centroid. In this paper, we propose an efficient and robust method to generate MAI from interferometric pair having non-zero Doppler centroid. The proposed method efficiently improves the coherence of MAI, because the co-registration of forward- and backward- single look complex (SLC) images is carried out by time shift property of Fourier transform without resampling procedure. It also successfully removes azimuth flat earth and topographic phases caused by the effect of non-zero Doppler centroid. We tested the proposed method using ERS images of the Mw 7.1 1999 California, Hector Mine Earthquake. The result shows that the proposed method improved the coherence of MAI and generalized MAI processing algorithm.

Korean Households' Inflation Expectations and Information Rigidity (우리나라 일반인 인플레이션 기대 형성 행태 분석)

  • This paper attempts to investigate the Korean households' inflation expectations with particular attention to information rigidity. For this purpose, we derive an empirical model from a sticky information model $\acute{a}$ la Mankiw and Reis (2002) and estimate it. In addition, it is also examined whether the expectation formation is state-dependent on macroeconomic conditions. The main findings of this paper are as follows. First, it turns out that the information rigidity in Korean households' inflation expectations is very high. In a month, most of the households simply keep their inflation expectations the same as before instead of updating them based on newly arrived information. Furthermore, when updating their expectations, the households tend to rely on the backward-looking information such as actual inflation rates in the past rather than on the forward-looking forecasts by experts. Second, it is found that the expectation formation is varying as inflation rate changes. Specifically, when the inflation is high, the sensitivity of the households' inflation expectations to actual inflation increases and the gap between inflation expectations and actual inflation shrinks. It implies that Korean households update their expectations more frequently when the inflation matters than not.
