A transient liquid crystal technique has become one of the most effective ways in measuring the local heat transfer coefficients on the entire surface. The key Point of this technique is to convert the inlet flow temperature into an exponential temperature profile using a mesh heater. In order to verify the validity of this technique. the heat transfer characteristics on the wall surface by a pair of longitudinal vortices is investigated experimently and numerically. A standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ is used for the numerical analysis of turbulent flow field. It is found from experiment and numerical analysis that two peak values exist over the whole domain. as the longitudinal vortices move to the farther downstream. these peak values decrease and the dimensionless averaged Nusselt number with the lapse of time is maintained nearly at constant values. The experiment results obtained from the present experiment in terms of the transient liquid crystal technique are in good agreement with the numerical results. Therefore, the transient liquid crystal technique developed for the measurement of heat transfer coefficient is proved to be a valid method.

Aeroacoustic computation of a fully-developed turbulent pipe flow at $Re_{\tau}=175$ and M = 0.1 is conducted by LES/LPCE hybrid method. The generation and propagation of acoustic waves are computed by solving the linearized perturbed compressible equations (LPCE), with acoustic source DP(x,t)/Dt attained by the incompressible large eddy simulation (LES). The computed acoustic power spectral density is closely compared with the wall shear-stress dipole source of a turbulent channel flow at $Re_{\tau}=175$. A constant decaying rate of the acoustic power spectrum, $f^{-8/5}$ is found to be related to the turbulent bursts of the correlated longitudinal structures such as hairpin vortex and their merged structures (or hairpin packets). The power spectra of the streamwise velocity fluctuations across the turbulent boundary layer indicate that the most intensive noise at ${\omega}^+$ < 0.1 is produced in the buffer layer with fluctuations of the longitudinal structures ($k_zR$ < 1.5).

The onset of longitudinal vortices in horizontal Blasius flow isothermally heated from below is studied analytically. The assumption that at the onset of thermal instability the thermal disturbances are confined within the thermal boundary layer is employed for the limiting case of large Prandtl number. Polynomial representations for the basic quantities obtained by the integral method of the boundary layer analysis have been used. Then the system of differential equations and boundary conditions for disturbance quantities is reformulated in a convenient form so that the solutions may be constructed as rapidly convergent power series. The critical buoyancy parameter G $r_{x}$$^{*}$ /R $e^{*1.5}$ falls between 2 and 6, which is about one order of magnitude lower than the existing experimental values. It is also shown that the positions of the onset of instability can be closely predicted by the present theory.y.y.

A numerical analysis is performed using two dimensional axisymmetric RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations system on the transition sequence of the Integrated Rocket Ramjet and the unsteady reacting flow-field in a ramjet combustor during unstable combustion. The mode transition of an axisymmetric ramjet is numerically simulated starting from the initial condition of the boost end phase of the entire ramjet. The unsteady reacting flow-field within combustor is computed for varying injection area. In calculation results of the transition, the terminal normal shock is occurred at the downstream of diffuser throat section and no notable combustor pressure oscillation is observed after certain time of the inlet port cover open. For the case of a small injection area at the same equivalence ratio, periodic pressure oscillation in the combustor leads to the terminal shock expulsion from the inlet and hence the buzz instability occurred.
The classical two-degree-of-freedom (2-d-o-f) "sectional model" is of common use to study the dynamics of suspension bridges. It takes into account the first pair of vertical and torsional modes of the bridge and describes well global oscillations caused by wind actions on the deck, yielding very useful information on the overall behaviour and the aerodynamic and aeroelastic response; however, it does not consider relative oscillations between main cables and deck. On the contrary, the 4-d-o-f model described in the two Parts of this paper includes longitudinal deformability of the hangers (assumed linear elastic in tension and unable to react in compression) and thus allows to take into account not only global oscillations, but also relative oscillations between main cables and deck. In particular, when the hangers go slack, large nonlinear oscillations are possible; if the hangers remain taut, the oscillations remain small and essentially linear: the latter behaviour has been the specific object of Part I (Sepe and Augusti 2001), while the present Part II investigates the nonlinear behaviour (coexisting large and/or small amplitude oscillations) under harmonic actions on the cables and/or on the deck, such as might be generated by vortex shedding. Because of the discontinuities and strong nonlinearity of the governing equations, the response has been investigated numerically. The results obtained for sample values of mechanical and forcing parameters seems to confirm that relative oscillations cannot a priori be excluded for very long span bridges under wind-induced loads, and they can stimulate a discussion on the actual possibility of such phenomena.
The classical two-degree-of-freedom (2-d-o-f) "sectional model" is currently used to study the dynamics of suspension bridges. Taking into account the first pair of vertical and torsional modes of the bridge, it describes well global oscillations caused by wind actions on the deck and yields very useful information on the overall behaviour and the aerodynamic and aeroelastic response, but does not consider relative oscillation between main cables and deck. The possibility of taking into account these relative oscillations, that can become significant for very long span bridges, is the main purpose of the 4-d-o-f model, proposed by the Authors in previous papers and fully developed here. Longitudinal deformability of the hangers (assumed linear elastic in tension and unable to react in compression) and external loading on the cables are taken into account: thus not only global oscillations, but also relative oscillations between cables and deck can be described. When the hangers go slack, large nonlinear oscillations are possible; if the hangers remain taut, the oscillations are small and essentially linear. This paper describes the model proposed for small and large oscillations, and investigates in detail the limit condition for linear response under harmonic actions on the cables (e.g., like those that could be generated by vortex shedding). These results are sufficient to state that, with geometric and mechanical parameters in a range corresponding to realistic cases of large span suspension bridges, large relative oscillations between main cables and deck cannot be excluded, and therefore should not be neglected in the design. Forthcoming papers will investigate more general cases of loading and dynamic response of the model.

A MDO study of a midium-sized solar powered High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) UAV has been performed, focused on energy balance. In the MDO process, Vortex Lattice Method(VLM) is employed for the aerodynamic modeling of the vehicle, of which structural weight is estimated with the modeling proposed by Cruz. Tail volume ratios have been set as constants, while the location of tail surfaces is determined from longitudinal static stability criterion. By balancing the available energy from solar cells, battery, and altitude, with the energy-requirement of the vehicle, the possibility of continuous flight over 24-hours has been investigated. The solar radiation level is set as that of summer at the latitude of $36^{\circ}$ north. During the daytime, the aircraft climbs using solar energy, accumulating potential energy, which supplements energy balance during the night. Optimizations have been sought in size of the vehicle, its weight distribution, and flight strategy.
As wind flows around a sharp-edged body, the resulting separated flow becomes complicated, with multiple separations and reattachments as well as vortex recirculation. This widespread and unpredictable phenomenon has long been studied academically as well as in engineering applications. In this study, the flow characteristics around rectangular prisms with five different aspect ratios were determined through wind tunnel experiments and a detached eddy simulation, that placed the objects in a simulated deep turbulent boundary layer at $Re=4.6{\times}10^4$. A series of rectangular prisms with the same height (h = 80 mm), different longitudinal lengths (l = 0.5h, h, and 2h), or different transverse widths (w = 0.5h, h, and 2h) were employed to observe the effects of the aspect ratio. Furthermore, five wind directions ($0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$) were selected to observe the effects of the wind direction. The simulated results of the surface pressure were compared to the wind tunnel experiment results and the existing results of previous papers. The vortex and spectrum were also analyzed to determine the detailed flow structure around the body. The paper also highlights the pressure distribution around the rectangular prisms with respect to the different aspect ratios. With an increasing transverse width, the surface suction pressure on the top and side surfaces becomes stronger. In addition, depending on the wind direction, the pressure coefficient experiences a large variation and can even change from a negative to a positive value on the side surface of the cube model.

Several notes on ground effects drawn from Navier-Stokes analyses and their aerodynamic interpretations were addressed here; For two-dimensional ground effect, the change of surface pressure due to image vortex, the venturi effect due to thickness and the primary inviscid flow phenomena of ground effect, and for three-dimensional ground effect, strengthened wing tip vortices, increased effective span and the outward drift of trailing vortices. Irodov's criteria were evaluated to investigate the static longitudinal stability of conventional NACA 6409 and DHMTU 8-30 airfoils. The analysis results demonstrated superior static longitudinal stability of DHMTU 8-30 airfoil. The DHMTU airfoil has quite lower value of lrodov's criterion than the conventional NACA airfoil, which require much smaller tail volume to stabilize the whole WIG-craft at its design stage.

The near-wall flow structures of turbulent boundary layer over riblets having semi-circular grooves were investigated experimentally for the drag decreasing ($s^+=25.2$) and drag increasing ($s^+=40.6$) cases. The field of view used for tho velocity field measurement was $6.75{\times}6.75mm^2$ in physical dimension, containing two grooves. One thousand instantaneous velocity fields over the riblets were extracted for each case of drag increase and decrease. For comparison, five hundreds instantaneous velocity fields over a smooth flat plate were also obtained under the same flow conditions. To see the global flow structure qualitatively, the flow visualization was also performed using the synchronized smoke-wire technique. For the drag decreasing case ($s^+=25.2$), most of the streamwise vortices stay above the riblets, interacting with the riblet tips. The high-speed in-rush flow toward the riblet surface rarely influences the flow inside tho riblet valleys submerged in the viscous sublayer. The riblet tips seem to impede the spanwise movement of the longitudinal vortices and induce secondary vortices. The turbulent kinetic energy in the riblet valley is sufficiently small to compensate the increased wetted area of the riblets. In addition, in the logarithmic region, the turbulent kinetic energy are small or almost equal to that of a smooth flat plato. For the drag increasing case ($s^+=40.6$), however, the streamwise vortices move into the riblet valley freely, interacting directly with the riblet inner surface. The penetration of the high-speed in-rush flow on the riblets increases tho skin-friction. The turbulent kinetic energy is increased in the riblet valleys and even in the outer region compared to that over a flat plate.
