Direct design of partially prestressed concrete solid beams

  • Tests were conducted on two partially pre-stressed concrete solid beams subjected to combined loading of bending, shear and torsion. The beams were designed using the Direct Design Method which is based on the Lower Bound Theorem of the Theory of Plasticity. Both beams were of $300{\times}300mm$ cross-section and 3.8 m length. The two main variables studied were the ratio of the maximum shear stress due to the twisting moment, to the shear stress arising from the shear force, which was varied between 0.69 and 3.04, and the ratio of the maximum twisting moment to the maximum bending moment which was varied between 0.26 and 1.19. The required reinforcement from the Direct Design Method was compared with requirements from the ACI and the BSI codes. It was found that, in the case of bending dominance, the required longitudinal reinforcements from all methods were close to each other while the BSI required much larger transverse reinforcement. In the case of torsion dominance, the BSI method required much larger longitudinal and transverse reinforcement than the both the ACI and the DDM methods. The difference in the transverse reinforcement is more pronounce. Experimental investigation showed good agreement between design and experimental failure loads of the beams designed using the Direct Design Method. Both beams failed within an acceptable range of the design loads and underwent ductile behaviour up to failure. The results indicate that the Direct Design Method can be successfully used to design partially prestressed concrete solid beams which cater for the combined effect of bending, shear and torsion loads.

단면형상 변화에 따른 전열교환기 열전달 특성변화에 대한 연구 (Heat Transfer Performance of the Duct with Various Cross Section in Heat Exchanger)

  • It is a critical task to keep the ventilation system working in a proper and efficient manner in large multi-storey buildings, and the enthalpy exchanger is becoming an increasingly important part of the ventilation system by playing the function of channeling heat and moisture. We present a computational study on the heat transfer performance of the cross-flow enthalpy exchanger, which is in large use for residential buildings. The ducts are considered whose cross-sectional shapes resemble triangle and longitudinal centerline a cosine wave. It is shown that, as the cross-sectional shape departs from triangle, the heat transfer performance of the duct tends to deteriorate. Also, applying the wave-like shape to the longitudinal centerline of the duct increases the rate of heat transfer and the applied pressure-gradient at the same time. The origin of the performance variations in the cases considered are quantitatively analyzed and discussed.

  • 본 연구는 지하심부에 유류를 저장할 때 널리 이용되는 수막시설의 설치에 따른 공동주변의 흐름해석을 모의하기 위한 유한요소모형의 확립에 관한 것이다. 최종 행렬방정식의 대칭형 전체전도행렬을 풀기위해 벡터저장방식의 Choleski법을 이용하였으며, 전기상사법의 결과와 비교하여 모형을 검증하였다. 모형을 실제 비축기지에 적용하였으며, 대표적인 횡단면에 대해 요소망을 구성하여 공동내부의 압력과 수평수막설치에 따른 포텐션과 유속의 변화 등을 비교하고, 종단면에 대한 분석을 통해 연직수막설치에 따른 포텐셜의 변화와 인접공동간의 영향을 비교 분석한 결과 본 연구에서 확립된 모형은 공동주변 흐름해석에 유용하게 이용될 수 있는 것으로 확인되었다.

$e^-$-$CF_4$산란중에서 전자군의 확산계수 및 에너지분포함수 연구 (Analysis of Electron Swarm Diffusion Coefficients and Energy Distribution Function in $e^-$-$CF_4$ Scattering)

  • In this paper, the behavior of electron swarm parameters and energy distribution function of the discharge under high E/N condition in e$^{-10}$ -CF$_{4}$ gas have been analysed over the E/N range from 1-300(Td) by the MCS and BEq methods using set of electron collision cross section determined by the authors. The swarm parameters and energy distribution function have been calculated for the pulsed Townsend, steady-state Townsend and Time of Flight methods. The results gained that the value of electron swarm parameters such as the electron drift velocity, the electron ionization and attachment coefficients and longitudinal diffusion coefficients in agreement with the experimental and theoretical data for a range of E/N. The electron energy distribution function has been explained and analysed in e$^{-10}$ -CF$_{4}$ at E/N : 5, 10, 100, 200, 300(Td) for a case of the equilibrium region in the mean electron energy and respective set of electron collision cross sections. The validity of the results has been confirmed by TOF and SST methods.

Reliability of Maintained Hull Girders of Two Bulk Carrier Designs Subjected to Fatigue and Corrosion

  • The objective of the paper is to study the impact of changing the traditional hull design of bulk carriers by providing them with a double hull while keeping the same deadweight. It is demonstrated that by introducing the double hull the structural reliability is increased throughout the entire life and also the extend of the needed repair is reduced. The results are obtained with recently developed mathematical tools for the reliability assessment of ship hulls subjected to the existence of multiple cracks both in the stiffeners and in the plating and it models the crack growth process. The effect of corrosion is represented as time dependent. The long-term stress range acting on the elements is defined as a function of the local transverse pressure of the internal cargo and outside sea water combined with the stresses resulting from the longitudinal bending of the hull, which is a combined with the stresses resulting from the longitudinal bending of the hull, which is a combineation of horizontal and vertical bending moments. The effect of maintenance actions is modelled as a stochastic process. The results show that a different design of the midship section improves the structural safety and also the economy with respect to structural repair of bulk carriers.

V-gutter 형 보염기가 장착된 모델 연소기 내에서 발생하는 화염 동특성 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Flame Dynamics in the Model Combustor with V-gutter type Flameholder)

  • 본 연구는 V-gutter형 보염기를 장착한 연소기 내에 발생한 연소 주파수의 발생 메커니즘에 대해 규명하는 것이다. 연소기는 $40{\times}40mm$의 단면적을 가진 긴 덕트 형상을 가지고 있으며, 10,12,14mm의 폭을 가진 V-gutter 형의 보염기를 장착하였다. 연료로 CNG를 수직 분사하여 실험을 수행하였다. 연소시 발생하는 주파수는 연소기의 형상에 기인한 1L 종방향 모드가 발생함을 확인하였다. 또한 보염기의 크기가 화염 가능 영역의 범위에 영향을 미침을 확인하였다. 그리고 종방향 모드의 압력변동이 화염 구조에 중요한 영향을 미침을 확인하였다.

천흘수 부유식 해양 구조물의 유탄성 모형시험 기법 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Development of Hydroelastic Experimental Techniques of Very Large Box-shaped Floating Structures with Shallow Draft)

  • 본 논문에서는 해상공항 등 그 길이가 수 km에 달하는 초대형 부유식 해양구조물의 대모형 실험기법을 제시하고, 제시된 모형실험 기법을 바탕으로 한 실제 실험을 수행하여 초대형 부유식 해양구조물의 유탄성 운동특성을 파악하였다. 모형실험의 구조물로는 일본의 메가플로트 구조물($L{\times}B{$\times}D=300m{\times}60m{\times}2m$)을 대상으로 7m급의 모형을 제작하여 실험을 수행하였다. 모형실험에서는 모형의 유탄성 거동을 측정하기 위하여 3행 9열의 지점에 포텐셔미터를 설치하였으며, 선수, 선미, 중앙부의 양 끝단에 8개 스트레인 게이지를 부착하였다.

재래산양(在來山羊)의 소장형성(小腸形成)에 관한 조직학적관찰(組織學的觀察) (Histological Observation on Development of the Small Intestine of the Korean Native Goat)

  • The morphological development of the small intestinal tissues of the Korean native goat were observed by light microscopy. Samples were taken from a 60-, 90-, 120-day-old fetus, a newborn goat and a 30-day-old goat. The results were summarized as follows; 1. In the small intestine of 60-day-old fetus, the apexes and sides of villi were covered with a simple columnar epithelium, and intervilous areas and mucosal ridges were still covered with stratified epithelium of two to six cell layers. Mesenchymal tissues formed lamina propria, circular muscle layer and serosa. The numbers of villi per cross section of the small intestine (NVPCS) were 10 to 18. 2. In 90-day-old fetus, intervillous areas and mucosal ridges of the organ were covered with simple columnar epithelium. Goblet cells in epithelium and outer longitudinal muscle layer often appeared. NVPCS were 35 to 60 and Brunner's glands were appeared. 3. In 120-day-old fetus, Brunner's glands of the duodenum and circular connection of outer longitudinal muscle layer were formed, NVPCS were 50 to 87. 4. In newborn goat, Peyer's patches were fully formed and NVPCS were 50 to 87. 5. In 30-day goat, the small intestine was fully matured and NVPCS were 81 to 102.

Numerical simulation of concrete beams reinforced with composite GFRP-Steel bars under three points bending

  • Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) applications in the structural engineering field include concrete-FRP composite systems, where FRP components are either attached to or embedded into concrete structures to improve their structural performance. This paper presents the results of an analytical study conducted using finite element model (FEM) to simulate the behavior of three-points load beam reinforced with GFRP and/or steel bars. To calibrate the FEM, a small-scale experimental program was carried out using six reinforced concrete beams with $200{\times}200mm$ cross section and 1000 mm length cast and tested under three point bending load. The six beams were divided into three groups, each group contained two beams. The first group was a reference beams which was cast without any reinforcement, the second group concrete beams was reinforced using GFRP, and the third group concrete beams was reinforced with steel bars. Nonlinear finite element simulations were executed using ANSYS software package. The difference between the theoretical and experimental results of beams vertical deflection and beams crack shapes were within acceptable degree of accuracy. Parametric study using the calibrated model was carried out to evaluate two parameters (1) effect of number and position of longitudinal main bars on beam behavior; (2) performance of concrete beam with composite longitudinal reinforcement steel and GFRP bars.

Experimental and numerical studies on seismic performance of hollow RC bridge columns

  • To investigate the seismic performance and to obtain quantitative parameters for the requirement of performance-based bridge seismic design approach, 12 reinforced concrete (RC) hollow rectangular bridge column specimens were tested under constant axial load and cyclic bending. Parametric study is carried out on axial load ratio, aspect ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio and transverse reinforcement ratio. The damage states of these column specimens were related to engineering limit states to determine the quantitative criteria of performance-based bridge seismic design. The hysteretic behavior of bridge column specimens was simulated based on the fiber model in OpenSees program and the results of the force-displacement hysteretic curves were well agreed with the experimental results. The damage states of residual cracking, cover spalling, and core crushing could be well related to engineering limit states, such as longitudinal tensile strains of reinforcement or compressive strains of concrete, etc. using cumulative probability curves. The ductility coefficient varying from 3.71 to 8.29, and the equivalent viscous damping ratio varying from 0.19 to 0.31 could meet the requirements of seismic design.
