The moisture and dimensional behaviors of a nail-laminated timber (NLT)-concrete slab composed of an NLT-plywood composite and topping concrete are monitored for 385 days. The slab is developed for using as flexural elements such as floors. The humidity control of wood gently introduces significant fluctuations under the ambient relative humidity into the slab, and fluctuations in the relative humidity result in dimensional changes. The equilibrium moisture content of the slab increases from 6.7% to 15.3% during the monitoring period, resulting in a width (radial) strain of 0.58%. The length (longitudinal) strain is negligible, and the height (tangential) strain is excluded from the analysis because of abstruse signal patterns generated. Concrete pouring causes a permanent increase in the width of the NLT-plywood composite. However, the width deforms because the weight of the concrete mixture loosens the nail-laminated structure, not because of the significant amount of moisture in the mixture. The dimensional stabilization effect of the nail-laminated system is demonstrated as the composite strain is lower than the total strain of lumber and plywood, which are elements constituting the nail-laminated structure.

BACKGROUND: In many cardiovascular disorders, the contractile performance of the right ventricle (RV) is the primary determinant of prognosis. For evaluating RV volumes and function, 4 dimensional (4D)-echocardiography has become common. This research used 2D and 4D modalities to assess RV contractile performance in hypertensive patients. METHODS: A total of 150 patients with essential hypertension were enrolled in this study, along with 75 age and sex-matched volunteers. Clinical evaluation and echocardiographic examination (including M-mode, tissue Doppler imaging, and 2D speckle tracking) were conducted on all participants. RV volumes, 4D-ejection fraction (EF), 4D-fractional area change (FAC), 4D-tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), 4D-septal and free wall (FW) strain were all measured using 4D-echocardiography. RESULTS: Hypertensive patients showed 2D-RV systolic and diastolic dysfunction (including TAPSE, 2D-right ventricular global longitudinal strain, RV-myocardial performance index and average E/EaRV) and 4D-RV impairment (including right ventricular EF, FAC, RV strain and TAPSE, right ventricular end-diastolic volume and right ventricular end-systolic volume) compared to the control group. We verified the prevalence of RV systolic dysfunction in hypertension patients using the following parameters: 1) 15% of them had 2D-TAPSE < 17 mm vs. 40% by 4D-TAPSE; 2) 25% of them had 2D-GLS < 19% vs. 42% by 4D-septal strain and 35% by 4D FW strain; 3) 35% of hypertensive patients had 4D-EF < 45%; and finally; 4) 25% of hypertensive patients had 2D-FAC < 35% compared to 45% by 4D-FAC. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of RV involvement was greater in 4D than in 2D-modality trans-thoracic echocardiography. We speculated that 4D-echocardiography with 4D-strain imaging would be more beneficial for examining RV morphology and function in hypertensive patients than 2D-echocardiography, since 4D-echocardiography could estimate RV volumes and function without making geometric assumptions.
Some results of experimental investigation conducted to assess the effect of cement composite strength and ductility on the shear behavior and crack-damage mitigation of stud connections between existing reinforced concrete frame in school buildings and seismic strengthening elements from cyclically direct shear tests are described. The cement composite strengths include 50 for medium strength and 70 MPa for high strength. Two types of cement composites, strain-hardening cement composite (SHCC) and non-shrinkage mortar, are used for stud shear connection specimens. The special SHCCs are reinforced with hybrid 0.2% polyethylene (PE) and 1.3% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers at the volume fraction and exhibits tensile strain capacity ranging from 0.2 to 0.5%. Test result indicates that SHCC improves the seismic performance and crack-damage mitigation of stud shear connections compared with stud connections with non-shrinkage mortar. However, the performance enhancement in SHCC stud connections with transverse and longitudinal reinforcements is less notable for those without additional reinforcement.
This paper is concerned with the simulation-based process design method involved non-steady state problem of tension levelling considering the elasto-plastic hardening behavior of a metallic strip by a commercial code ABAQUS/Standard. The tension levelling process is peformed to elongate the strip plastically in combination of tensile and bending strain by a controlled manner so that all longitudinal fibers in the strip have an approximately equal amount of length and undesirable strip shapes are corrected to the flat share. Objectives of this paper are the development of a general method for the design of a tension leveller by a finite element method and parameter studies for the deisgn variables such as the applied tension, the roll intermash includes the determination of the steady state using the simple unit of the tension levelling line and the effect of the finite element mesh size on the amount and distribution of the strain calculated. The analysis provides the information about the intermesh effect on the amount and final shapes of the strip and distribution of the strain in order to determine the amount elongation for correction of the irregular share.
In general, the shoe stretcher is utilized to stretching the leather of shoe upper in the longitudinal direction. In the capstone design class, we tried to make a shoe leather stretcher for the ball of foot. Since a natural cow leather was recovered in length according to relaxation time after stretched, it was difficult to predict the initial amount of set up of stretching. In this paper, tensile and relaxation experiments were conducted in order to predict the amount of initial stretching for appropriate tensile length. Apparatus of leather stretching was designed and strains of leather were measured according to relaxation times of 12, 18, 24 hours after stretching of 24 hours. It was revealed that the ratio of the final relaxed strain and the initial applied strain was about 0.404 with R-square of 0.990 for a shoe cow leather.
This paper is concerned with a simulation-based process design for the tension levelling of metallic strips based on the elasto-plastic finite element analysis with reduced integration and hourglass control. The tension levelling process is performed to elongate the strip plastically in combination of tensile and bending strain by a controlled manner so that all longitudinal fibers in the strip have an approximately equal amount of length and undesirable strip shapes are corrected to the flat shape. The analysis deals with a method for calculating the quantitative level of the curl to investigate the roll arrangements and intermesh suitable to elimination of the curl. The analysis provides the information about the intermesh effect on the amount, the tension effect and distribution of the strain as well as the stress in order to determine the amount of elongation for correction of the irregular shape. The desired elongation is referred to determine the number of work rolls and the value of tension. Especially, the analysis investigates tile effect of the mesh size in the non-steady state finite element analysis on the amount and distribution of the strain.
It is well established that arteries are subjected to residual stress. Due to the effect of residual stress, the arteries open to a horse-shoe shape when a longitudinal cut is made on an excised arterial segment. Previously, the residual stress has been quantified by the opening angle of the horse-shoe shape. We have employed a finite element analysis of the open arterial segment to restore the same to the original cylindrical shape and computed the circumferential strain as well as the stress distribution in the wall. In this study, the stress distribution in the femoral arteries of miniswine was computed with and without the residual stress for a range of transmural pressures. Our analysis showed that the residual stress has the effect of redistribution of the circumferential stresses between the intima and the adventitia under physiological loading. The redistribution of the stress with the inclusion of residual stress may be important in the studies on effect of wall stresses on the endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells.
