  • Background: Long-term comparisons of phacoemulsification with topical medication are limited in canine diabetic cataracts. Objectives: To compare outcomes of eyes submitted to phacoemulsification with those of topical medication for canine diabetic cataracts and identify risk factors for complications. Methods: Through medical records review, 150 eyes (76 dogs) with diabetic cataracts were included; 58 eyes (31 dogs) underwent phacoemulsification (phaco-group) and 92 eyes (48 dogs) received ophthalmic solution alone (medication-group). The medication-group was divided into owner-led and vet-led groups depending on who elected not to perform surgery. Comparisons involved time-to-complications, vision, and the number and type of ophthalmic solutions administered. The association between complications and pretreatment clinical findings was investigated. Results: No difference was found in complication risk between the phaco and owner-led medication groups. Conversely, the vet-led medication-group had a higher complication risk than the other groups. At the last follow-up, 94.8% of the phaco-group had vision, whereas 7.6% of the medication-group restored some visual axis. Poor glycemic control in the medication-group and younger age in the phaco-group increased complication risk. At 1-year post-treatment, the average number of ophthalmic solutions administered was 1.7 and 2.6 in the phaco and medication groups, respectively. The medication-group used anti-inflammatories the most throughout the follow-up, whereas the phaco-group used anti-inflammatories the most until 1-year post-treatment and lacrimostimulants at 1.5-year post-treatment. Conclusions: For canine diabetic cataracts, phacoemulsification is recommended because it is superior to topical management alone in terms of maintaining vision and reducing the number of ophthalmic solutions required in the long term.

  • A 6-year-old intact male Maltese dog presented with a history of blindness and ataxia. Neuro-ophthalmic examination revealed dilated pupils with absent pupillary light reflexes and menace response in both eyes. Mild peripapillary edema was noted in the fundus of the right eye. After magnetic resonance imaging, the dog was provisionally diagnosed with meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology. Follow-up funduscopy was performed to monitor the condition of the optic discs for three years. Despite of the treatment with prednisolone, the optic nerve progressed to atrophy and the dog couldn't restore vision.

  • In this paper, we present a hybrid inertial and vision-based tracking system for VR applications. One of the most important aspects of VR (Virtual Reality) is providing a correspondence between the physical and virtual world. As a result, accurate and real-time tracking of an object's position and orientation is a prerequisite for many applications in the Virtual Environments. Pure vision-based tracking has low jitter and high accuracy but cannot guarantee real-time pose recovery under all circumstances. Pure inertial tracking has high update rates and full 6DOF recovery but lacks long-term stability due to sensor noise. In order to overcome the individual drawbacks and to build better tracking system, we introduce the fusion of vision-based and inertial tracking. Sensor fusion makes the proposal tracking system robust, fast, accurate, and low jitter and noise. Hybrid tracking is implemented with Kalman Filter that operates in a predictor-corrector manner. Combining bluetooth serial communication module gives the system a full mobility and makes the system affordable, lightweight energy-efficient. and practical. Full 6DOF recovery and the full mobility of proposal system enable the user to interact with mobile device like PDA and provide the user with natural interface.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate how clinical nutrition services is provided at a long term care hospital in Korea and to investigate job satisfaction levels of the clinical dietitians. Methods: Survey questionnaire was sent to dietitians working at a long term care hospital in Korea. The participating hospitals (n=240) were randomly selected from 1,180 long- term care hospitals using a stratified sampling method. A total of 134 long term care hospital s and 223 dietitians completed the survey of clinical nutrition service s and job satisfaction questionnaires The job satisfaction questionnaire included 27 job satisfaction questions on task, stability vision, working conditions, and relationship areas. Results: The average nutritional screening rate was 17.9% and the rate of computerized nutritional screening system was 9.7% in the participating hospitals. Nutritional intervention rate was only 3.2% of all patients. KOIHA (Korea Institute for Healthcare Accreditation) accreditated hospitals showed only 50% performance rate of nutrition service evaluation area. This shows that after achieving KOIHA accredition, many hospitals do not emphasize the performance of nutritional services. The job satisfaction scores in all four areas ranged from 2/5 to 3/5, implying generally low job satisfaction level in hospital dietitians. Linear regression analysis results showed that the "hospital adequacy grade" type was a significant predictor of job satisfaction level for two areas (working conditions & relationship). Conclusions: There is a need to provide proper standardized clinical nutrition services as a primary treatment and we observed large variations in the quality of nutritional service s in long term care hospitals. Therefore, government and local hospitals have to work on implementing nutritional programs and policies for improved service and care.

  • A person's behavioral recognition is the recognition of what a person does according to joint movements. To this end, we utilize computer vision tasks that are utilized in image processing. Human behavior recognition is a safety accident response service that combines deep learning and CCTV, and can be applied within the safety management site. Existing studies are relatively lacking in behavioral recognition studies through human joint keypoint extraction by utilizing deep learning. There were also problems that were difficult to manage workers continuously and systematically at safety management sites. In this paper, to address these problems, we propose a method to recognize risk behavior using only joint keypoints and joint motion information. AlphaPose, one of the pose estimation methods, was used to extract joint keypoints in the body part. The extracted joint keypoints were sequentially entered into the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model to be learned with continuous data. After checking the behavioral recognition accuracy, it was confirmed that the accuracy of the "Lying Down" behavioral recognition results was high.

  • This study is about the development of ICT-based wearable devices for vision recovery that can cause functional myopia improvement through accommodation training. Vision Training Device(OTUS) is a head mount type wearable device, which naturally stimulates the contraction and relaxation of the ciliary muscles of eye. Users can conduct customized vision training based on personal vision information stored through the device. In the experiment, the effects of improvement of the symptoms by the accommodation training were compared and analysed for the two groups (16 comparative group and 16 accommodation training group) after causing functional myopia. The result showed the functional myopia improved average 0.44D±0.35 (p<0.05) at the accommodation training group compared to the comparative group. This study proved the effectiveness of vision training device(OTUS) on functional myopia, but further clinical trials are judged necessary to prove the possibility of long-term control of the functional myopia.
