  • This paper proposes methodologies for the development of radiation thermometer using InSb photo-detector of which spectral sensitivity is excellent over the wave length range of 2 .mu. m .approx. 5 .mu. m. The proposed radiation thermometer has broad measurement range from normal to high, up to more than 1000 .deg. C, with high accuracy, and can measure temperature on the material surface or heat emission noncontactely with high speed. Optical system was consisted of two convex lens with foruslength of 15.2mm for infrared lay focusing, Ge filter to cut the short wave length components and sapphire filter to cut the long wave length components. The cold shielded was installed in the whole surface of the light-absorbing element to remove the error- mometer, calibration using black body furnace which has temperature range of 90 .deg. C .approx. 1100 .deg. C was carried out, and temperature calaibration curve was obtained by exponential function curvefitting. The result shows maximum error less than 0.24%(640K .+-. 1.6K) over the measurement range of 90 .deg. C .approx. 700 .deg. C, and from this result the usefulness of the developed thermometer has been confirmed.

  • Uniformity is a key feature of state-of-the-art infrared focal planed array (IRFPA) and infrared imaging system. Unlike traditional infrared telescope facility, a ground-based infrared radiant characteristics measurement system with an IRFPA not only provides a series of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) infrared image but also ensures the validity of radiant measurement data. Normally, a long integration time tends to produce a high SNR infrared image for infrared radiant characteristics radiometry system. In view of the variability of and uncertainty in the measured target's energy, the operation of switching the integration time and attenuators usually guarantees the guality of the infrared radiation measurement data obtainted during the infrared radiant characteristics radiometry process. Non-uniformity correction (NUC) coefficients in a given integration time are often applied to a specified integration time. If the integration time is switched, the SNR for the infrared imaging will degenerate rapidly. Considering the effect of the SNR for the infrared image and the infrared radiant characteristics radiometry above, we propose a-wide-dynamic-range NUC algorithm. In addition, this essasy derives and establishes the mathematical modal of the algorithm in detail. Then, we conduct verification experiments by using a ground-based MWIR(Mid-wave Infared) radiant characteristics radiometry system with an Ø400 mm aperture. The experimental results obtained using the proposed algorithm and the traditional algorithm for different integration time are compared. The statistical data shows that the average non-uniformity for the proposed algorithm decreased from 0.77% to 0.21% at 2.5 ms and from 1.33% to 0.26% at 5.5 ms. The testing results demonstrate that the usage of suggested algorithm can improve infrared imaging quality and radiation measurement accuracy.

  • This paper describes the measured results upon monochromatic light, compound light, and light emanated from light emitting diodes by a simplified wavemeter with a semiconductor color sensor. Since a single unit element of a semiconductor color sensor with two PN junction photodiodes has been developed, the author has fabricated the simplified wave detector by using the element. The simplified wive detector has been measured results upon monochromatic light, compound light, and light emanated from light emitting diodes. Since luminescent color of each diode locates in luminosity region, comparison of measured values of PD-150 and PD-151 resulted no remarkable difference in averaged wave length. As for monochromatic light, PD-151 showed very cross value to the color filter peak value rather than PD-150. As for compound light, PD-150 has shown such influence of long wave length light which reaches to near infrared ray with respect to PD-151.

  • Camera calibration is an indispensable process for improving measurement accuracy in industry fields such as machine vision. However, existing calibration cannot be applied to the calibration of mid-wave and long-wave infrared cameras. Recently, with the growing use of infrared thermal cameras that can measure defects from thermal properties, development of an applicable calibration target has become necessary. Thus, based on heat conduction analysis using finite element analysis, we developed a calibration target that can be used with both existing visible cameras and infrared thermal cameras, by implementing optimal design conditions, with consideration of factors such as thermal conductivity and emissivity, colors and materials. We performed comparative experiments on calibration target images from infrared thermal cameras and visible cameras. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed calibration target.

  • In this paper we discuss about the practical implementation of a combined CO and CO2 dual sensor module that is adapted by NDIR (Non-Dispersive Infrared) method that measures the absorbance of gas like CO and CO2 by using gas particles' characteristics that absorb specific wave lengths of infrared ray. NDIR has a long life time, excellent measurement and precision compared to the existing contact types or chemical types of CO2 sensors. Since optical cavity technology that had been developed until now can measure CO2 only we research and develop an optimal optical cavity design and density-temperature calibration technologies that can measure CO and CO2 at the same time and is important to decide the performance of the sensor module according to well-designed wave guides of the different length.

  • Long-wave infrared detectors using the type-II InAs/GaSb strained superlattice (T2SL) material system with the nBn structure were designed and fabricated. The band gap energy of the T2SL material was calculated as a function of the thickness of the InAs and GaSb layers by the Kronig-Penney model. Growth of the barrier material ($Al_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}Sb$) incorporated Te doping to reduce the dark current. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the $1^{st}$ satellite superlattice peak from the X-ray diffraction was around 45 arcsec. The cutoff wavelength of the fabricated device was ${\sim}10.2{\mu}m$ (0.12 eV) at 80 K while under an applied bias of -1.4 V. The measured activation energy of the device was ~0.128 eV. The dark current density was shown to be $1.0{\times}10^{-2}A/cm^2$ at 80 K and with a bias -1.5 V. The responsivity was 0.58 A/W at $7.5{\mu}m$ at 80 K and with a bias of -1.5 V.

  • This study carried out to understand the thermal characteristics of various surface material which compose the city through the observation in the summer. To examine passive cooling effect of planting of building, it is arranged four different materials that is natural grass, grass block, concrete slab and artificial grass. The results of this study are as follows; (1) Natural grass and grass block show the lower surface temperature because of the structures of leaf can do more thermal dissipation effectively. (2) There is little surface temperature between artificial grass and concrete. But there is little high surface temperature difference between natural grass and concrete because of latent heat effect. (3) The concrete can play a role of the tropical nights phenomenon as high heat capacity of concrete compare with other materials. (4) It is nearly same color in artificial grass and natural grass but there is large difference between natural grass and artificial grass at albedo. There is different albedo in near infrared ray range. (5) A short wave radiation gives more effect at the globe temperature than long wave radiation. (6) The artificial turf protected the slab surface temperature increase in spite of thin and low albedo materials.

  • This study is about the passive cooling effects of three outdoor solar shading facilities as trees, pergola with wistaria vine and membrane shading structure, which are expected to provide cool spots in the summer. Field observations of measuring thermal environment of selected facilities is executed. Thermal environment measuring was categorized as short wave radiation, long wave radiation, net radiation, globe temperature, surface temperature measured by infrared camera. Heat transfer mechanism is analyzed with overall data from field measurement. Results from this study are as below; 1) Radiation balance measured on shaded surface under membrane shading structure was 17%($86W/m^2$) of the unshaded surface radiation balance($511W/m^2$). 2) Surface temperature comparison between vegetation and membrane of the shading structure is performed at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Surface temperature of vegetation was same as air temperature and that of membrane was $5^{\circ}C$ higher than air temperature. Vegetation transpiration is considered as the causing factor which make those differences. 3) Results from this study could be used as fundamental data for reducing heat island phenomena and continuos research on this subject would be needed.

  • The Sun's ray is composed of Infrared(49%), Visible light(40%) and Ultra violet(11%), however the ray getting to the earth is FIR(Far infrared; 60%), IR(Infrared; 20%), and UV(Ultra Violet; 20%). Human beings has utilized FIR already from time immemorial. Hershel found out Infrared for the first time. in the Industrial Revolution the Infrared and FIR had been begun to use making products. In these days, with contemporary science FIR would be begun to clear up the implication in the human body and organic compound. IR classified by wavelength three parts NlR, MIR, FIR. There is FIR which is radiated from healthy human body the wave length is 8-l4m. The human body is composed of proteins which get easily changed by a thermal factor (about 42 $^{\circ}$C over). FIR with low temperature can deeply penetrate on the human body composed things without troublesomes, since FIR has effectively operated on the human body at low temperature (35-40 $^{\circ}$C). When FlR penetrated on the human body. it would inhibit the abnormal genes and cells expression, and then information of DNA and RNA would be reexpressed for arranging DNA and RNA abnormal state. As FlR's receptors in the body, it could be presumed that N-glycosyl linkage of purine and deoxyribose, RNA splicing process, and Heat shock protein. To take the FIR which was a optimized wavewlength and strength, at first, we induced the characteristic algorithm and the computerized programing. Then we formed that the formular of optimized FIR with physical, mathematical logic and theory. especially, Plank, Kirchhoff, Wien, Stefan-Boltzmann's logic and law. In the long run, the formular was induced with integration mathematical, since we had to know the molecular wavelength. Based on the induced formular as above, we programmed the optimized FlR radiating computerized program. In this research, we designed the eletronic circuit f3r interfacing with human body to diagnosis and treatment with FIR sensor which radiated FIR wavelength optimized.

  • This paper presents the design and evaluation of the optical system for an uncooled thermal-imaging camera. The operating wavelength range of this system is from $7.7{\mu}m$ to $12.8{\mu}m$. Through optimization, we have obtained a LWIR (Long Wave Infrared) optical system with a focal length of 5.44 mm, which consists of four aspheric surfaces and two diffractive surfaces. The f-number of the optical system is F/1.2, and its field of view is $90^{\circ}{\times}67.5^{\circ}$. The hybrid lens was used to balance the higher-order aberrations, and its diffraction properties were evaluated by scalar diffraction theory. We calculated the polychromatic integrated diffraction efficiency, and the MTF drop generated by background noise. We have evaluated the thermal compensation of a LWIR fixed optical system, which is optically passively athermalized to maintain MTF performance in the focal depth. In conclusion, these design results are useful for an uncooled thermal-imaging camera.
