Long-Distance Mothers' Foster Care Types, Separation Anxiety, and Guilt in Foster Care (주말부모 어머니의 자녀양육실태, 격리불안과 죄책감)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the characteristics of foster care of long-distance parents who meet their children on weekend and to examine the relationships among the separation anxiety and maternal guilt in foster care. The subject consisted of 138 employed mothers who are living separately with their children. The instruments used for this study were the Separation Anxiety Scale(Cho & Park,1992), the Maternal Guilt Scale(Kim & Kang, 1997), the Parental Satisfaction Scale(Hyun & Cho,1994), and the Parental Stress Scale(Park,1994). The main results of this study were as followings: 1. Mothers had a tend to rely on family members expecially grandparents for foster care of their children. They usually have visited to meet their children weekend and made a phone call once a day. Parental satisfaction in foster care was reported to be moderately high level. 2. The subject’s separation anxiety was found to be high, and it was strong positive relationships to maternal guilt feeling in foster care. The results of this study have implications for both formal and informal support systems of employed mothers with children. The findings of this study may used as basis for understanding long-distance parents’problems in foster care, developing support programs, and public policy for employed mothers.

Long-Term Maximum Power Demand Forecasting in Consideration of Dry Bulb Temperature (건구온파를 오인한 장기최대전력수요예측에 관한 연구)

  • Recently maximum power demand of our country has become to be under the great in fluence of electric cooling and air conditioning demand which are sensitive to weather conditions. This paper presents the technique and algorithm to forecast the long-term maximum power demand considering the characteristics of electric power and weather variable. By introducing a weather load model for forecasting long-term maximum power demand with the recent statistic data of power demand, annual maximum power demand is separated into two parts such as the base load component, affected little by weather, and the weather sensitive load component by means of multi-regression analysis method. And we derive the growth trend regression equations of above two components and their individual coefficients, the maximum power demand of each forecasting year can be forecasted with the sum of above two components. In this case we use the coincident dry bulb temperature as the weather variable at the occurence of one-day maximum power demand. As the growth trend regression equation we choose an exponential trend curve for the base load component, and real quadratic curve for the weather sensitive load component. The validity of the forecasting technique and algorithm proposed in this paper is proved by the case study for the present Korean power system.

Seed Deterioration Response of Different Genes of Sweet Corn during Long-tenn Storage

  • Sweet com seeds deteriorate faster due to low starch content than field com seeds when stored for a long tenn. This study had been conducted to observe the seed deterioration of four different sweet corns in a long tenn storage conditions in room temperature. Four kinds of sweet com genes (sh2, bt, su, and se) were harvested from 15 days to 50 days after silking with 5-day intervals. These seeds were stored in the room temperature and tested for germination percentages from 3 months to 18 months period with 3-month interval. su seeds germinated better than other types of gene. Hybrid Mecca which is sh2 gene germinated better when stored for 3 months to 18 months. For all genes, mean regression equations in relation to storage periods showed linear responses. For regression equation, the slope of sh2 gene was lower than that of su gene. The highest slope value was observed in bt gene showing faster deterioration rate. The rate at which seed deteriorates seems to be affected by the date at which it was harvested. The seeds that were harvested at the optimum time deteriorated more slowly than those which were not.

Influence of Long-term Supplementation with Korean Red Ginseng on in vivo Antioxidant Capacities in Rats

  • Effects of ginseng on in vivo antioxidant capacities with age were studied in rats. All rats were reared in the conventional system. Ginseng-treated rats were supplied with ginseng water extracts (25 mg/kg/day) continuously from 6 weeks of age to spontaneous death. None of the rats showed any discernible adverse effects of treatment with ginseng-containing water. There was no significant difference in body weight (BW) gains with age between treated and control groups. However, ginseng extracts did cause a decrease in the level of serum low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, glucose, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in the treated rats. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase in liver cytosol decreased with age in the control group. However, these enzyme activities were well maintained in the ginseng-treated rats and, especially, catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities were consistently higher than in control rats. The levels of total sulfhydryl group (T-SH) and glutathione reductase (GR) were unchanged, and glutathione-s-transferase (GST) activity gradually decreased with age in both groups. There were no differences in T-SH, GR, or GST between the control and treatment groups. These results indicate that long-term administration of ginseng retards age-related deterioration in some biochemical parameters such as cholesterol, glucose, and lactate dehydrogenase in serum and it has an enhancing effect on antioxidant capacity in the liver.

A Study on the Development of Long Term Exposure $NO_2$ Sampler (장기 노출 $NO_2$ 간이 샘플러 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The concentrations of $NO_2$ were measured to estimate a new developed long term exposure $NO_2$ sampler at Pusan City considering the meteorological factors from May to July, in 1994. The monthly mean concentration of $NO_2$ was 15.9 PPb and 36.2 ${\mu}\ell$/day $NO_2$ and their high values were shown in the downtown of Pusan City which show potential pollution due to the increase of traffic activities and micrometeorological factors In and around the City. As a result of statistical correlation between $NO_2$ concentration by new sampling method and $NO_2$ concentration by the handy air sampler and chemiluminescent nitrogen oxides analyzer, 1994, correlation coefficients were high(r=0.93) and showed more than 0.88 value in the high concentration data set, which was arbitrarily divided into 30${\mu}\ell$ $NO_2$ concentration in an attempt to further investigate these relationships. Therefore, use of new developed long term exposure $NO_2$ sampler is good for $NO_2$ measurement and valuable for estimation of air quality in the urban and Industrial area.

Long-term Tolvaptan Treatment of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease in Korea

  • A 22-year-old male patient was diagnosed with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). He received conservative treatment with an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor. Two years later, oral therapy, consisting of 60 mg tolvaptan per day, was initiated. Compared with height-adjusted total kidney volume, the rate of kidney growth reduced significantly from 7.33% to 0.66% annually, since commencement of the tolvaptan therapy. The liver enzyme profile and serum sodium level and osmolality were constantly within normal ranges. In Korea, this is the first reported case of a patient with ADPKD who received tolvaptan treatment for more than 1 year. This case demonstrates that long-term tolvaptan treatment appears to be safe, well tolerated, and effective for ADPKD.

Clinical safety and efficacy of a novel marine source of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids

  • Squid is a sustainable source of long-chain omega 3 fatty acids. This study aims to assess the safety and triglyceride-lowering efficacy of refined oil derived from the squid(Todarodes pacificus) viscera. Male and female participants with elevated fasting serum lipids (i.e., total cholesterol of ≥5.2 mmol/L or fasting serum triglyceride of ≥1.65 mmol/L) were randomly allocated to the control (n = 52) or squid oil group (n = 52), and participants in the latter group were instructed to consume 3 g of squid oil daily for 60 days. None of the subjects reported adverse events associated with the consumption of squid oil. Baseline clinical chemistry and hematological parameter values and those toward the end of the treatment period were similar, and all values were within the normal range. Fasting cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the control and squid oil groups were similar; however, toward the end of the 60 day study period, these levels significantly reduced in the squid oil group relative to those in the control group (P< 0.01). However, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol remained unchanged in both groups. Thus, it can be inferred that squid oil is a safe source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and has beneficial effects on the blood lipid levels. This is the first clinical study on squid oil usage, and suggests that it could be a sustainable source of omega 3 fatty acids.

Short and long-term immune effects of Poly (I:C) in kidney of Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) (넙치(Paralichthys olivaceus) 신장에서 Poly (I:C)의 단기 및 장기적인 면역 효과)

  • Viral diseases cause enormous economic losses to the olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) aquaculture industry in Korea. This study aimed to identify immune-related genes expressed in the kidney of olive flounder injected with Polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (Poly (I:C)). Thirty fish were divided into two groups by intraperitoneal injection of 100µl of diethylpyrocarbonate-treated water or poly I:C per fish. Kidney tissues at day 3 and 30 after the injection were used for RNA-seq analysis to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Poly I:C group upregulated il8, cfh, tnfaip2b, c3b.2, ly6d and cd38 genes at 3 days post-injection. Additionally, cd22, ccl34a.3, c9, cxcl19, ccl27a, ccl7, and cfh genes were upregulated at 30 days post-injection. Differential expression gene analysis showed that poly I:C has both short and long-term immune effects in olive flounder. This study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the molecular mechanism of the short and long-term immune effects of poly I:C.

  • IRIS(International Research on the Interior of the sun) is the name of a worldwide network of 6 stations for whole disc Doppler shift measurements. The network has been operating since 1987 and by now a few series of a hundred days long unbroken (by day/night periodicity) data were received. Analysis of these data allowed to receivesome new results which are discussed in the paper.

  • The Chinese ancient accounts of timing observations of 48 lunar eclipses and the secular variation of the Earth's spin speed are discussed. A series of ${\Delta}$T expressing the secular deceleration of the Earth's rotation was obtained. The average increase rate of length of the day is about 1.5 milliseconds per century.
