Assortment Optimization under Consumer Choice Behavior in Online Retailing

  • This paper studies the assortment optimization problem in online retailing by using a multinomial logit model in order to take consumer choice behavior into account. We focus on two unique features of online purchase behavior: first, there exists increased amount of uncertainty (e.g., size and color of merchandize) in online shopping as customers cannot experience merchandize directly. This uncertainty is captured by the scale parameter of a Gumbel distribution; second, online shopping entails unique shopping-related disutility (e.g., waiting time for delivery and security concerns) compared to offline shopping. This disutility is controlled by the changes in the observed part of utility function in our model. The impact of changes in uncertainty and disutility on the expected profit does not exhibit obvious structure: the expected profit may increase or decrease depending on the assortment. However, by analyzing the structure of the optimal assortment based on convexity property of the profit function, we show that the cardinality of the optimal assortment decreases and the maximum expected profit increases as uncertainty or disutility decreases. Therefore, our study suggests that it is important for managers of online retailing to reduce uncertainty and disutility involved in online purchase process.

An Introduction to Logistic Regression: From Basic Concepts to Interpretation with Particular Attention to Nursing Domain

  • Purpose: The purpose of this article is twofold: 1) introducing logistic regression (LR), a multivariable method for modeling the relationship between multiple independent variables and a categorical dependent variable, and 2) examining use and reporting of LR in the nursing literature. Methods: Text books on LR and research articles employing LR as main statistical analysis were reviewed. Twenty-three articles published between 2010 and 2011 in the Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing were analyzed for proper use and reporting of LR models. Results: Logistic regression from basic concepts such as odds, odds ratio, logit transformation and logistic curve, assumption, fitting, reporting and interpreting to cautions were presented. Substantial shortcomings were found in both use of LR and reporting of results. For many studies, sample size was not sufficiently large to call into question the accuracy of the regression model. Additionally, only one study reported validation analysis. Conclusion: Nursing researchers need to pay greater attention to guidelines concerning the use and reporting of LR models.

  • The basic idea of Quality Function Deployment(QFD) is to deploy the voice of customers into the final product through product planning, part planning, process planning, and manufacturing. In the product planning stage, which is the first stage of product development, customer attributes(CAs) are translated into engineering characteristics(ECs). Then, based on the relationship between CAs and ECs, the target values of ECs are determined. In the previous research, the process of analyzing these relationships is mostly subjective in nature. In this article, we formulate the process of determining the target values of ECs as an optimization model. That is, we first determine the relationship between CAs and ECs as cumulative logit models and construct constraints into which the company strategy as well as the needs of customers can be incorprated. Next, cost functions of ECs are developed, which are summed into an objective function. An algorithm to solve the formulated optimization problem is developed and illustrated with an example.

Policyholder Surrender Behaviors under Extreme Financial Conditions

  • We model surrender rates with a few explanatory variables such as the difference between reference marke rates and product crediting rates, the policy age since the contract was issued, unemployment rates, economy growth rates, and seasonal effects using logit function. We investigate the policy holder surrender behaviors of US single premium deferred annuities(SPDA) and Korean interest indexed annuities under extreme financial conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to conduct the review of female labor suply, and thus, to provide useful theoretical and empirical frameworks for future studies related to female labor supply. Based on the theory of the allocation of time, the process of individual labor supply was systematically reviewed. Participation Probit/Logit, Tobit, and Selection B;ias Corrected Regression were considered in estimating the function of female labor supply which modifies the selection bias. Based on the previous empirical results, wage rate, asset income, husband's income, the level of eduction, and child-related variables such as the presence of child and the number of children might be considered for the empirical specification of female labor supply.

A Genetic Algorithm for Trip Distribution and Traffic Assignment from Traffic Counts in a Stochastic User Equilibrium

  • A network model and a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed to solve the simultaneous estimation of the trip distribution and traffic assignment from traffic counts in the congested networks in a logit-based Stochastic User Equilibrium (SUE). The model is formulated as a problem of minimizing a non-linear objective function with the linear constraints. In the model, the flow-conservation constraints are utilized to restrict the solution space and to force the link flows become consistent to the traffic counts. The objective of the model is to minimize the discrepancies between two sets of link flows. One is the set of link flows satisfying the constraints of flow-conservation, trip production from origin, trip attraction to destination and traffic counts at observed links. The other is the set of link flows those are estimated through the trip distribution and traffic assignment using the path flow estimator in the logit-based SUE. In the proposed GA, a chromosome is defined as a real vector representing a set of Origin-Destination Matrix (ODM), link flows and route-choice dispersion coefficient. Each chromosome is evaluated by the corresponding discrepancies. The population of the chromosome is evolved by the concurrent simplex crossover and random mutation. To maintain the feasibility of solutions, a bounded vector shipment technique is used during the crossover and mutation.

HGLM을 적용한 병원 도산 예측방법의 개발 (Development of the Prediction Method for Hospital Bankruptcy using a Hierarchical Generalized Linear Model(HGIM))

  • The hospital bankruptcy rate is increasing, therefore it is very important to predict the bankruptcy using the existing hospital management information. The hospital bankruptcy is often measured in year intervals, called grouped duration data, not by the continuous time elapsed to the bankruptcy. This study introduces a hierarchical generalized linear model(HGLM) for analysis of hospital bankruptcy data. The hazard function for each hospital may be influenced by unobservable latent variables, and these unknown variables are usually termed as random effects or frailties which explain correlations among repeated measures of the same hospital and describe individual heterogeneities of hospitals. Practically, the data of twenty bankrupt and sixty profitable hospitals were collected for five years, and were fitted to HGLM. The results were compared with those of the logit model. While the logit model resulted only in the effects of explanatory variables on the bankruptcy status at specific period, the HGLM showed variables with significant effects over all observed years. It is concluded that the HGLM with a fixed ratio and a period of total asset turnrounds was justified, and could find significant within and between hospital variations.

VUS와 HUM 최적화를 이용한 선형함수의 모수추정 (Parameter estimation of linear function using VUS and HUM maximization)

  • ROC 곡선을 구성하는 한 개의 스코어 변수로 이루어진 분류모형을 확장하여 선형 스코어의 함수인 리스크 스코어를 고려하고, 선형 스코어의 계수를 추정하기 위한 방법으로 AUC를 최대화하는 방법을 사용한다. 이런 AUC 접근방법으로 구한 스코어의 계수 추정량은 로지스틱모형을 이용한 선형 스코어의 모수의 최대가능도 추정량보다 자료가 로지스틱 가정이 맞지 않는 일반적인 상황에서도 좋은 추정 결과를 보인다. 본 연구에서는 다항범주로 분류되어 현실적인 판별 및 예측 상황을 고려하여 AUC 접근방법을 확장한 VUS와 HUM 접근방법을 제안한다. 연결함수로는 로짓, complementary log-log와 로짓을 변형한 함수의 세 종류와 그리고 다양한 분류점의 분포인 경우에 대하여도 모의실험을 실시하였다. 본 논문에서는 다항범주 판별결과에 대하여 VUS와 HUM 접근방법도 AUC 접근방법과 유사하게 다양한 연결함수에 대하여 로지스틱모형 추정방법보다 동등하거나 더 나은 모수추정 결과를 보이는 것을 확인하였다.

도시계획시설 용량 산정을 위한 확률적 수요 예측에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Stochastic Demand Forecast for the Capacity Calculation of Urban Planning Facilities)

  • 본 연구는 대한민국 서남권의 도심항공교통(UAM) 거점환승센터를 광주송정역에 건립하였을 경우 도심항공교통(UAM)의 수단분담률을 예측하는 것이다. 효용함수와 수단선택 로짓모형을 이용한 점 추정방식의 확정적 교통수요 예측모형은 미래의 변동성을 반영하는 못하는 한계점을 지니며 이를 보완하고자 본 연구에서는 효용함수와 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션 분석을 결합하여 확률론적 도심항공교통의 수단분담률을 추정하였다. 도심항공교통의 수단분담률을 결정하는 변수의 확률분포를 가정하여 시뮬레이션 결과 최소 0.07%, 최대 4.7%, 평균 0.95%의 수단분담률로 산출되었다. 수단분담률에 영향을 미치는 주요 영향 요인의 민감도 분석 결과 단위요금, 비용파라미터, 기본요금, 이착륙 시간이 중요 요인으로 나타났으며, 단위요금, 기본요금, 이착륙 시간은 음(-)의 상관관계를 보이는 것으로 나타나 도심항공교통의 이용 활성화를 위해서는 적정 수준의 요금 설정이 중요할 것으로 판단된다.

  • 개인여객이 운송수단을 선택하여 얻는 효용은 시간, 비용 등의 운송특성과 소득 등 개인특성의 함수이다. 기존 연구에서는 일반적으로 운송특성이 여객효용에 미치는 효과를 추정하기 위한 방법으로 운송특성변수에 대해 선형인 효용함수를 전제로 한 무작위 효용모형을 이용하여 왔다. 그러나 본 논문에서는 개인여객의 효용극대화를 분석하는 방법으로서 운송수단선택행위가 소비, 여가, 소득창출 등 보다 본원적인 활동으로부터 파생된다는 점에 주목하여, 다시 말해, 개인의 본원적 활동에 따른 효용극대화 관점에서 운송수단선택에 따른 효용이 진정으로 선형의 형태를 지니고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 이론적 결론은 첫째, 본원적 활동에 따른 효용이 소비와 여가만의 함수일 때 선형가정은 운송시간의 일부구간에서 진실이다. 둘째, 만일 효용이 노동활동이나 운송시간에 의해 직접 영향을 받을 경우 운송특성에 따른 효용의 선형성은 극단적인 상황이 아니면 성립하지 않는다. 따라서 운송특성에 따른 효용의 크기를 추정하기 위해선 선형이 아닌 보다 일반화된 함수에서의 근사가 요구된다.
