  • Port marketing using websites in the e-business environment is essential in response to the competition to become hub ports, especially since shipping companies, ports' major customers, are being pressed by shippers to reduce logistics costs and introduce large ships to realize economies of scale, thereby reducing the number of ports of call. In this sense, this study intends to approach the port industry from the perspective of e-business and suggest vitalization methods using Gwangyang Port websites(6C; contents, community, communication, connection, commerce, customization) as one of the ways to turn it into Northeast Asia's hub port of logistics.

  • In this paper the order picking problem in warehouses is considered, a topic which has received considerable attention from the international academic body in recent years. The order picking problem deals with the retrieval of order items from prespecified locations in the warehouse, and its objective is usually the minimization of travel time or travel distance. Hence, a well-thought order picking policy in combination with an appropriate storage policy will enhance warehouse efficiency and reduce operational costs. This paper starts with a literature overview summarizing approaches to routing order pickers, assigning stock-keeping units to pick locations and designing warehouse layouts. Since the layout design might affect both storage and routing policies, the three factors are interdependent with respect to order picking performance. To test these interdependencies, a simulation experiment was set up, involving two types of warehouse layout, four types of storage policy, five well-known heuristics and five sizes of order picking list. Our results illustrate that from the point of view of order picking distance minimization it is recommended to equip the warehouse with a third cross aisle, although this comes at the cost of a certain space loss. Additionally, we propose a set of most appropriate matches between order picking heuristics and storage policies. Finally, we give some directions for further research and recommend an integrated approach involving all factors that affect warehouse efficiency.

  • This paper considers a joint problem for blood inventory planning at hospitals and blood delivery planning from blood centers to hospitals, in order to alleviate the blood service imbalance between big and small hospitals being occurred in practice. The joint problem is to determine delivery timing, delivery quantity, delivery means such as medical drones and legacy blood vehicles, and inventory level to minimize inventory and delivery costs while satisfying hospitals' blood demand over a planning horizon. This problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming model by considering practical constraints such as blood lifespan and drone specification. To solve the problem, this paper employs a Lagrangian relaxation technique and suggests a time efficient Lagrangian heuristic algorithm. The performance of the suggested heuristic is evaluated by conducting computational experiments on randomly-generated problem instances, which are generated by mimicking the real data of Korean Red Cross in Seoul and other reliable sources. The results of computational experiments show that the suggested heuristic obtains near-optimal solutions in a shorter amount of time. In addition, we discuss the effect of changes in the length of blood lifespan, the number of planning periods, the number of hospitals, and drone specifications on the performance of the suggested Lagrangian heuristic.

  • Analysis of current state of construction industry functioning in Ukraine allows us to identify a number of problems having negative impact on sustainable development of construction industry, especially in terms of its organization. Therefore, it is absolutely essential to study existing methods of organization system supplying construction sites with necessary material resources. Companies can develop their own logistics departments, which independently solve logistics issues related to transportation organization and management, accounting and inventory management, acquisition and warehousing, intercommunication (ability to obtain both final and intermediate information during transporting materials). Using a complex of methods is substantiated: the hierarchy analysis method (Saati's method), the network method, the defect elimination algorithm DEA, the transportation problem that finds optimal problem solutions for construction sector with the purpose of rational supplying uninterrupted construction with building resources in the designed model "provider-transportation-costs".

  • Weather seems to influence industries in a variety of ways. On a day-to-day basis, it is the most volatile external factor influencing consumer and market behavior. And, because weather is constantly changing, industries must deal with a continuously shifting array of opportunities and risks. This study aims to examine how climate and weather changes and information, as external environmental factors, have affected the Korean industries, particularly marine shipping and logistics. To find out the economic value of marine weather information, we use measurable results of VVOS(Vessel and Voyage Optimization Services) in the ocean shipping, which the marine weather software tool can save fuel costs up to 4%. When the fuel saving is same as VVOS's performance, the saving of Korean flag ship is estimated about 62 billion won and the saving of total flag ship is estimated about 519 billion won. However, coastal shipping companies have been struggling with the heavy weather factors, such as wave height, wave period and wind. Major findings are that wind and wave height have a significant negative effect on cargo transport, while wave period has a significant positive effect on cargo transport. And to conclude, when we use efficiently the marine weather information, we can increase cargo transport and save fuel costs etc.

  • The present study aimed to derive decision factors for residency in the hinterland of Incheon New Port that is undergoing the development of port hinterlands and changes in leasing methods considered from the perspective of companies and analyze the priorities of determinants for residency through Fuzzy-AHP in order to present a direction to activate companies entries into the hinterland of Incheon New Port. When the comprehensive rankings of determinants for residency in the hinterland of Incheon New Port, rent levels among cost factors took the highest ranking with a value of 10.2% followed by the throughput of the port among market factors with a value of 8.2%, the scale of the market on the background with a value of 7.3%,, reduction in inland transport costs among cost factors with a value of 7.1%, connectivity to inland transportation networks among locational factors with a value of 6.7%, and designation as a free trade zone and the scale with a value of 6.4%. When seen from the viewpoint of companies to determine whether to move into the hinterland of Incheon New Port, the rent level should be provided to be more attractive compared to the hinterlands of ports in other regions. In addition, inland transportation costs which are a matter of the most serious concern of shippers in the capital region should be reduced and sea routes that can directly connect Incheon New Port to US ports and European ports should be opened.

  • The poverty level in Buru Regency is still high, despite the relatively stable economic growth. For this reason, the purpose of this study was to (1) Identify the leading commodity in each district in Buru Regency; (2) Analyze the effect of road infrastructure and leading commodities on poverty. The findings show that the most sparsely populated district is Fena Leisela, with mangoes as the leading commodity. Pineapple, langsat, apple rose, cabbages, cashews, coffee, cashew, melon, and watermelon are the leading products in Air Buaya, Batabual, Waplau, Lolong Guba, Lilialy, Waelata, Namlea, Kaiely Bay, and Waeapo, respectively. Additionally, the results also indicate that road infrastructure and leading commodities have a significant effect on poverty alleviation in Buru Regency. It means that improving infrastructure and increasing leading commodities production reduce poverty in the region. Good road infrastructure can promote connectivity between regions so that it can accelerate and expand economic development. The provision of infrastructure that encourages connectivity will reduce transportation costs and logistics costs to increase product competitiveness and accelerate the economic movement. When the road infrastructure in Buru Regency improves and new roads are built, it can improve transportation access, it will reduce the living cost for the poor and increase income, and open up opportunities for the poor to benefit from economic growth.

  • Excessive inventories result from poor scheduling, planning, and controls, and the converse is also same. With adequate inventories, supplies can transport products to customers in time without excessive delivering cost. So efficient inventory control is vital for successful logistics management operation. In terms of mass discount retailers such as Wal-Mart, Carrefour, E-Mart, and so on, they require the high-quality services such as a small-amount and a high-frequency delivery because of having small warehouse and wanting possess much more various goods. In the opposite, manufactures ask mass discount retailer to delivery more lots of goods because of reducing the number of deliveries. It goes without saying that both wish to prevent stockout(lack of inventories). Usually, mass discount retailers have the power more than manufactures. This paper proposed how to manage inventory and how many to order in view of the TPLC and supplier. We considered the economic order quantity models for multiple items so as to prevent urgent deliveries as possible as. And the tradeoff stockout costs and delivering costs.

  • Although companies have to concentrate on effort to save cost to survive competition, transportation costs are taking more portions in total sales costs due to globalization in the modern times. It is the reason why Transportation Management System TMS is getting more important. However, it is practically difficult for the system to fit to all of transportation environments and actually many problems are taking place with the system. Therefore, a new idea is necessary to solve such problems fundamentally rather than temporarily or superficially. To do so, if TRIZ, which is a theory that systematically establishes creative ideas on the basis of patent analysis, is employed, it can bring forth a guideline with some creative principles that can be applicable in drawing out innovative ideas based on conceptual shift. The present study aims to propose a methodology of how TRIZ should be applied to solve the problems that happen in TMS as a whole. Particularly, the study focuses on how to design customized TMS system that can be employed for each of different situations in a creative way.

  • This study is based on the assumption of surface transport linkages between Korea and China. Active economic cooperation between South Korea and North Korea are expected within the near future and Russia and China have interested in the land transport linkages in Korean peninsula. How much freight demands between the two countries that has been mainly dependent on air and sea transportation so far may convert the transport mode to surface transportation are estimated. Particularly, freight demands between South Korea and China's three northeast provinces are focused. The sensitivity analysis depends on transport time and transport cost changes is included. The modal shifts is estimated to be more sensitive to the changes in transport costs than those in transport time, suggesting the importance of transport costs of rail and road. Despite the dearth of data on the surface transport operation in North Korea, the attempts made in this study to estimate the demand conversion are hope to provide reference points for potential effects of the rail and road transport connections between China and the Korea peninsula before our discussions expand to the establishment of freight transport network of the northest Asia and, moreover, the Eurasian continent.
