International efforts to prevent illegally logged wood are expanding around the world. The "Legal Wood Trade Promotion System" was enacted in Korea in 2019 to strengthen the legal import and distribution of commercial wood in Korea. Since then, this system has promoted and ensured that the imported wood and wood products are legal with respect to the country of origin, wood species, and harvested area. As verification methods, DNA analysis technology and anatomical analysis using a microscope are mainly used in conjunction. Therefore, in this study, wood species of plywood were identified by analyzing the anatomical characteristics of various wood products for the first time. Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco.) and larch (Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carriere) plywoods (7, 9 ply) were obtained from four companies that supply plywood in Korea. After cutting each company's plywood to a size of about 1 cm3, the layers from top to bottom were separated into single layers, and three sections were observed using an optical microscope. The results revealed that the plywood was composed of a mixture of softwood and hardwood wood species, pine wood species, poplar wood species, or a mixture of larch and pine wood species. Identification of wood species using microscopy is important and can enable the scientific analysis and verification of various wood products, including plywood, imported from countries where the likelihood of indiscriminate distribution of illegal wood and illegal logging is high.

Nowadays water shortage is becoming one of the biggest problems in the Korea. Many different methods are developed for conservation of water. Soil water management has become the most indispensable factor for augmenting the crop productivity especially on soybean (Glycine max L.) because of their high susceptibility to both water stress and water logging at various growth stages. The farmers have been using irrigation techniques through manual control which farmers irrigate lands at regular intervals. Automatic irrigation systems are convenient, especially for those who need to travel. If automatic irrigation systems are installed and programmed properly, they can even save you money and help in water conservation. Automatic irrigation systems can be programmed to provide automatic irrigation to the plants which helps in saving money and water and to discharge more precise amounts of water in a targeted area, which promotes water conservation. The objective of this study was to determine the possible effect of automatic irrigation systems based on soil moisture on soybean growth. This experiment was conducted on an upland field with sandy loam soils in Department of Southern Area Crop, NICS, RDA. The study had three different irrigation methods; sprinkle irrigation (SI), surface drip irrigation (SDI) and fountain irrigation (FI). SI was installed at spacing of $7{\times}7m$ and $1.8m^3/hr$ as square for per irrigation plot, a lateral pipe of SDI was laid down to 1.2 m row spacing with $2.3L\;h^{-1}$ discharge rate, the distance between laterals was 20 cm spacing between drippers and FI was laid down in 3m interval as square for per irrigation plot. Soybean (Daewon) cultivar was sown in the June $20^{th}$, 2016, planted in 2 rows of apart in 1.2 m wide rows and distance between hills was 20 cm. All agronomic practices were done as the recommended cultivation. This automatic irrigation system had valves to turn irrigation on/off easily by automated controller, solenoids and moisture sensor which were set the reference level as available soil moisture levels of 30% at 10cm depth. The efficiency of applied irrigation was obtained by dividing the total water stored in the effective root zone to the applied irrigation water. Results showed that seasonal applied irrigation water amounts were $60.4ton\;10a^{-1}$ (SI), $47.3ton\;10a^{-1}$ (SDI) and $92.6 ton\;10a^{-1}$ (FI), respectively. The most significant advantage of SDI system was that water was supplied near the root zone of plants drip by drip. This system saved a large quantity of water by 27.5% and 95.6% compared to SI, FI system. The average soybean yield was significantly affected by different irrigation methods. The soybean yield by different irrigation methods were $309.7kg\;10a^{-1}$ from SDI $282.2kg\;10a^{-1}$ from SI, $289.4kg\;10a^{-1}$ from FI, and $206.3kg\;10a^{-1}$ from control, respectively. SDI resulted in increase of soybean yield by 50.1%, 7.0% 9.8% compared to non-irrigation (control), FI and SI, respectively. Therefore, the automatic irrigation system supplied water only when the soil moisture in the soil went below the reference. Due to the direct transfer of water to the roots water conservation took place and also helped to maintain the moisture to soil ratio at the root zone constant. Thus the system is efficient and compatible to changing environment. The automatic irrigation system provides with several benefits and can operate with less manpower. In conclusion, improving automatic irrigation system can contribute greatly to reducing production costs of crops and making the industry more competitive and sustainable.

This study was tried to calculate the stumpage value using GIS technique. Before calculating this price the feasible areas to cut were divided from all forests. The stumpage value per $m^3$ was calculated by the method of calculating back from the market price, according to the working volume of logging unit and clearing a felling area using GIS. The distribution of the stumpage value for the coniferous stands was estimated from minimum 10,000 won to maximum 50,000 won, and for the deciduous stands the stumpage value was distributed from minimum 20,000 won to maximum 40,000 won. The total estimated selling price for the cutting available area (197.3ha) among this study area(250ha) except the cutting limited area was about 1.13 billions won. And the estimated selling price for the korean white pine stands was about 650 millions won, occupied 57% among the total selling price, and for the deciduous stands showed 383 millions won, occupied 34% of the total price, and for the japanese larch was 9.69 millions won, occupied 9% of the total price. But the rigida pine stands showed only 1.22 millions won.
This study reports the formation characteristics of tar, ash and clinker due to a wood pellet grade and the performance analysis of wood pellet boiler in terms of the moisture contents change of the wood pellet. Tar was accumulated on the heating surface according to combustion of wood pellet, the ash was yielded on the floor of combustion chamber in a wood pellet boiler and the clinker was solidified at the burner due to combustion of the 3rd grade wood pellet. Especially, the moisture contents is important factor to define the grade. Wood of logging residues has a non-uniform moisture contents after the field process, yields of tar, ash and clinker are increased in case of combustion due to the high ash contents. For these reasons, emission of harmful compounds in the exhaust gas, decrease of boiler efficiency and the system operating errors are observed. In the performance analysis of wood pellet boiler in terms of the moisture contents change of the 1st grade wood pellet, the boiler efficiency was reduced by 27.08% with 6.6% moisture contents increase. The optimum moisture contents of wood pellet is needed to improve the boiler performance and efficiency.
Recently, geophysical prospecting methods have played very important roles in civil and environmental engineering problems. Technical advances in geophysical instruments and computer system made it possible to get underground images with very high resolution far purposes to resolve those problems. It was possible partly due to ever increasing demand for development of technologies needed to precisely detect polluted areas and prevent ground-related accidents. Based on the same demand, integrity tests of cast-in place piles draw more attention and development of accurate test procedures is required. Ultrasonic methods is one of most advanced non-destructive procedures. In the paper, a geotomography method is employed for the cast-in place pile integrity test using ultrasonic waves. The image of pile interior is scanned and scrutinized far better and more accurate decision in the cast-in place pile integrity. In this study, we firstly examined the accuracy fur tomography program with idealized synthetic models built in water tank: their position and size were changed in the tank and each case was studied. In the next stage, real concrete pile models were fabricated and images of anomaly areas inside the pile were scanned to successfully locate those areas.

This study assessed the hydrogeological characteristics of a seepage area of white leachate. The geological characteristics of the leachate were determined by a surface survey, and an electrical resistivity survey and borehole image processing system (BIPS) were applied to estimate the distribution of discontinuities, to assess the geological structure of the seepage areas. Fluctuations in groundwater level within boreholes were measured during periods of precipitation in the dry and wet seasons. The results show that electrical resistivity is lower in the seepage section than in non-seepage sections. The distribution of fracture zones and limestone cavities was inferred from the logging data and BIPS data. Variations in groundwater level and groundwater recharge, related to rainfall events, show the direct effect of rainfall events during the rainy season. We obtained a strong relationship between seepage amount and rainfall (correlation coefficients of 0.83-0.97).
Sea level rise, accompanied by climate change, is expected to exacerbate seawater intrusion in the coastal groundwater system. As the salinity of saturated groundwater increases, salinity can increase even in the unsaturated soil above the groundwater surface, which may cause crop damage in the agricultural land. The other adverse impact of sea level rise is reduced unsaturated soil thicknesses. In this study, a composite model to assess impacts of sea level rise in coastal agricultural land is proposed. The composite model is based on the combined applications of a three dimensional model for simulating saltwater intrusion into the groundwater and a vertical one dimensional model for simulating unsaturated zone flow and transport. The water level and salinity distribution of groundwater are calculated using the three dimensional seawater intrusion model. At some uppermost nodes, where salinity are higher than the reference value, of the 3D mesh one dimensional unsaturated zone modeling is conducted along the soil layer between the ground water surface and the ground surface. A particular location is judged salinized when the concentration at the root-zone depth exceeds the tolerable salinity for ordinary crops. The developed model is applied to a hypothetical agricultural reclamation land. IPCC RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios were used as sea level rise data. Results are presented for 2050 and 2100. As a result of the study, it is predicted that by 2100 in the climate change scenario RCP 8.5, there will be 7.8% increase in groundwater saltwater-intruded area, 6.0% increase of salinized soil area, and 1.6% in increase in water-logging area.
This study was carried out to examine the optimal road spacing and road density to minimize the total harvesting cost(road construction cost plus yarding cost) for mechanized yarding system to roadside by one - and two-stage two-way in Forestry build-up region. Chunchon-kun, Kangwon-do. The estimated road construction costs were ranged from ten million won to sixty million won per km. The results have indicated that cable crane was appropriate for yarding machine by one-stage, two-way, and estimated optimal road spacing was 1,698m~4,192m, averaged 3,087m, and road density was 3.44m/ha~8.44m/ha, and averaged 5. 12m/ha. In hilly terrain, combination of medium yarder and Logging bogie was suited to yarding machine by two-stage, two-way, and calculated optimal road spacing was 1,483m~3,481m, averaged 2,589m, and road density was 4.05m/ha~9.46m/ha, averaged 5.90m/ha. In steep terrain, combination of medium yarder and jinsung winch was suited, and estimated optimal road spacing was 1,693m~3,982m, averaged 2,960m, and road density was 3.68m/ha~8.64m/ha, averaged 5.38m/ha.
Ontology merging describes the process of integrating two ontologies into a new ontology. How this is done best is a subject of ongoing research in the Semantic Web, Data Integration, Knowledge Management System, and other ontology-related application systems. Earlier research on ontology merging, however, has studied for developing effective ontology matching approaches but missed analyzing and solving methods of problems of merging two ontologies given correspondences between them. In this paper, we propose a specific ontology merging process and a generic operator, T-MERGE, for integrating two source ontologies into a new ontology. Also, we define a taxonomy of merging conflicts which is derived from differing representations between input ontologies and a method for detecting and resolving them. Our T-MERGE operator encapsulates the process of detection and resolution of conflicts and merging two entities based on given correspondences between them. We define a data structure, MergeLog, for logging the execution of T-MERGE operator. MergeLog is used to inform detailed results of execution of merging to users or recover errors. For our experiments, we used oriental philosophy ontologies, western philosophy ontologies, Yahoo western philosophy dictionary, and Naver philosophy dictionary as input ontologies. Our experiments show that the automatic merging module compared with manual merging by a expert has advantages in terms of time and effort.
A phytosociological survey carried out using the Z.-M. School’s methodology and system of numerical-classification analyses, this study sought to classify the syntaxa of forest vegetation on Mt. Byeokbang and to collect basic data on the transitional zones of the southern Korean peninsula’s coastal region. The syntaxa were classified into three physiognomic types and nine communities, including (1) evergreen coniferous forests (Eurya japonica-Pinus thunbergii community and Ardisia japonica-Pinus densiflora community), (2) summer-green, broad-leaved forests (Chloranthus japonicus-Quercus serrate community, Syneilesis palmata-Quercus mongolica community, Quercus acutissima community, Carpinus turczaninovii var. coreana community, Fraxinus siebolidiana-Quercus dentate community, and Deutzia glabrata-Lindera erythrocarpa community), and (3) artificial afforestation (Alnus firma afforestation). The Chloranthus japonicus-Quercus serrata community, Syneilesis palmata-Quercus mongolica community, Fraxinus siebolidiana-Quercus dentata community, Carpinus turczaninovii var. coreana, community and Deutzia glabrata-Lindera erythrocarpa community were closely evaluated for national vegetation naturalness. It was confirmed that the Carpinus turczaninovii var. coreana community was endemic to Korea. Most syntaxa were defined as a secondary forestation due to various human activities (e.g., forest fires, logging, digging, climbing, etc.). The results of a canonical-correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that human activities, altitude, humus depth, rock cover ratio, slope, etc. were the main ecological factors determining the classified plant communities’ distribution patterns.
