  • Directly modulated fiber-optic links generally suffer higher link loss and larger signal distortion than externally modulated links. These result from the electron-photon conversion loss and laser modulation dynamics. As a method to overcome the drawbacks, we have experimentally demonstrated the RF performance of directly modulated, ultra-strong injection-locked gain-lever distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) lasers. The free-running DBR lasers exhibit an improved amplitude modulation efficiency of 12.4 dB under gain-lever modulation at the expense of linearity. By combining gain-lever modulation with ultra-strong optical injection locking, we can gain the benefits of both improved modulation efficiency from the gain-lever effect, plus improved linearity from injection locking. Using an injection ratio of R=11 dB, a 23.4-dB improvement in amplitude response and an 18-dB improvement in spurious-free dynamic range have been achieved.

  • Since human is vulnerable to emotional, physical and environmental distractions, most human inspectors cannot sustain a consistent 8-hour inspection in a day specifically for small components like door locking levers. As an alternative for human inspection, presented in this study is the development of a machine vision inspection system (MVIS) purposely for door locking levers. Comprises the development is the structure of the MVIS components, designed to meet the demands, features and specifications of door locking lever manufacturing companies in increasing their production throughput upon keeping the quality assured. This computer-based MVIS is designed to perform quality measures of detecting missing portions and defects like burr on every door locking lever. NI Vision Builder software for Automatic Inspection (AI) is found to be the optimum solution in configuring the needed quality measures. The proposed software has measurement techniques such as edge detecting and pattern-matching which are capable of gauging, detecting missing portion and checking alignment. Furthermore, this study exemplifies the incorporation of the optimized NI Builder inspection environment to the pre-inspection and post-inspection subsystems.

  • This paper describes a study on algorithm for the development of machine vision system as well as the inspection of automobile's plastic part locking lever to replace a human worker's eye inspection. Before developing the machine vision system based on the PC, the purpose of this research is to develop the algorithm to decide whether a product is a good/bad one in real time inspection. NI-LabVIEW software is used in the inspection method and an inspection program is developed using LabVIEW Vision image functions. The inspection program was built and validated to help the system operator set up the inspection area and change the criteria number in the program.

  • The purposes of this study are to investigate the stereotype of position and direction that users expect door lock control devices in different orientations, and to collect information regarding preferred door lock design and orientations. Six hundred subjects aged from lOs to 60s were surveyed under the operating conditions of three different door locks(cylindrical, circular-type, and lever-type auxiliary locks) mounted on the miniature door in two different orientations(right and left side). The door locks presented to the subjects were the most widely used door locks in our living environment. The results indicated that if the door locks were seen from the inside, 59~67% of the subjects expected 'vertical' position locking depending on the door lock control types, cylinder or auxiliary lock. When the door locks were seen from the outside, the locking direction of door lock control was not consistent either 'clockwise' or 'counterclockwise'. It was rather dependent on the orientation of the door lock positions. As a concluding remark, it is better to design and install door lock control devices in the way that users expect them to work.
