The results of determining superior commodities are used to determine regional product specialization and its contribution to the regional economy. Local superior commodities are dynamic and selected based on the potential to increase regional income. Research design, data, and methodology - This study used location quotient techniques and regional economic analysis with annual data rocks, production data in the agriculture, plantation, fishery and forestry sectors. Local superior commodities are calculated to contribute to regional economists. Result - The findings obtained showed the location quotient technique can determine local superior commodities and local superior commodities contributed positively to the regional economy. The test results were carried out in Jember Regency, East Java Province, Indonesia. Conclusion - The ass well main commodities of Jember Regency are tobacco. Tobacco commodities contribute positively to the regional economy, they were not significantly due to affected by the low of commodity prices in harvest. • The government of Gyeongbuk in Korea increased the financial input in the agricultural sector by 43% from 2008 through 2012. However, the productivity of the agricultural sector in Gyeongbuk rose only about 3.6% during the same period. This study evaluated the agricultural competitiveness of each city or county in Gyeongbuk using six evaluation indices (scale, productivity, finance input, location quotient, technical education, and total) and investigated the relationship between the indices and total values of agricultural productions. The results show that Sangju, Gyeongju, Andong, Uiseong, and Seongju have high competitiveness for the scale index. For the productivity index, Gimcheon, Mungyeong, Ulleung, Yeongju, and Seongju were highly evaluated. For the location quotient index, Yeongcheon, Uiseong, Cheongdo, Seongju, and Sangju have high competitiveness. Uiseong, Yeongdeok, Cheongsong, Gunwi, and Yeongyang were highly evaluated for the agricultural finance input index. For the agricultural technical education index, Chilgok, Sangju, Mungyeong, Uiseong, and Gyeongju have high competitiveness. Finally, Sangju, Euiseong, Yeongcheon, Gyeongju, and Andong were highly evaluated for the total competitive index, while Yeongdeok, Yeongyang, Goryeong, Uljin, and Cheongsong have a low competitiveness for the total competitive index. This study also found that out of five indices, scale, location quotient, and technical education indices have a positive and statistically significant effect on the total values of agricultural production. However, we did not find any statistically significant effect of the productivity and finance input indices on the total values of agricultural production. Hence, we can conclude that the government should focus their agricultural policy on scale, location quotient and education to improve total agricultural production.

  • This paper analyzes the specialization factors for greenhouse-grown horticultural crops and location quotient. We derived the location quotient of two crops from the Agricultural Census in 2000, 2005, and 2010. The location quotient shows that specialization factors for spinach and lettuce became more concentrated. This means that cultivation of vegetables lean too much towards specialized regions. Implementation policies based on the level of specialization is expected to more efficiently improve the competitiveness of regional agriculture. The logit analysis showed that GRDP, age, education, average employee, and ratio of computer use had a significant impact on specialization of spinach. GRDP, age, and education negatively affected the specialization coefficient of spinach. However, average employee, and ratio of computer use positively affected the specialization coefficient of spinach. Based on these results, we set up the policy tools specializing the regional location quotient.

  • The role of local economies in pursuing national economic development has expanded with greater influence. So a number of countries have adopted industrial cluster policies for regional and national economic development. Korean government, by the same token, puts emphasis on industrial cluster policies. But the academic studies on the necessities and effects of industrial clusters for Korean shipbuilding industry have been carried out little in Korean due to the lack of empirical studies on Korean industrial clusters. So this study focuses on analysing the industrial clusters in the Busan, Ulsan, Koungnam as southeast area of Korea. To be more specific, this study intends to provide answers to the following question: Are there industrial clusters in the Busan, Ulsan, Koungnam as southeast area of Korea analysed by the Location Quotient(LQ) analysis method? And as a consequence, Shipbuilding industrial clusters of southeast area of Korea were not identified.

  • Goesan-gun and Jeungpyeong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-Do have been separated administratively since 2003. Goesan-gun is rural area, and Jeungpyeong-gun is urban area. The purpose of this study is to observe changes after the separation of administrative districts (Goesan-gun and Jeungpyeong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-Do). This study observed changes of Goesan-gun and Jenugpyeong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-Do based on population, the highest land value, employees and location quotient. Population of Goesan-gun has decreased, and that of Jeungpyeong-gun has increased. The highest land value of Jeungpyeong-gun has increased more than that of Goesan-gun. Observation of location quotient, with the location quotient of 2013 as a criterion, showed that manufacturing business and producer service business have developed in Jeungpyeong-gun, while agriculture and customer service business have developed in Goesan-gun. This result is due to the difference between regional characteristic of Goesan-gun and Jeungpyeong-gun.

  • Rural areas have been faced with various problems such as aging and population decline, and in these circumstances, the activation of local communities is suggested as a solution. Agricultural producer organizations are a powerful means of maintaining rural society. The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of agricultural community activities by region by comparing the status of organization and activities and analyzing Location Quotient(LQ) based on the regional survey data in the 2015 census of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. As the results of the analysis, it was found that 38.35% of villages participated in economic organizations and 32.22% of villages were having urban-rural exchange activities. The crop clubs were actively operated in the Gyeongsangbuk province, and other economic organizations were organized in Jeju, Haenam-gun, and Dangjin-si more than other regions. And the urban-rural exchange activities were found in Chungcheongnam province mainly. The results of detailed LQ analysis by organization and activity showed that specialized regions for each community or activity were different. These results could be used for regional planning or the establishment of strategies for community activation.

  • Purpose - The logistics industry is often featured by its location relevance and industrial concentration. Industrial concentration is conducive to the effective transmission of information by reducing transaction costs and improving transaction efficiency, thus promoting the development of trade. The main purpose of this paper is to measure the spatial total factor productivity and location quotient of the logistics industry in Korea, and to study the impact of the logistics industry efficiency and agglomeration effect on import and export trade in Korea. Design/methodology - First, used the spatial stochastic frontier method to measure the spatial total factor productivity of the logistics industry in Korea, this serves as the efficiency index of the logistics industry in various regions of Korea. Second, calculated the location quotient (LQ) of the logistics industry to measure the industry's concentration degree. Third, employed a spatial econometric model to analyze the impacts of factors such as the efficiency and concentration levels of the logistics industry on import and export trade in Korea. Findings - This study's main findings can be summarized as follows: this study found that the overall efficiency of the logistics industry in Korea needs to be improved, even though it showed an upward trend in all regions of the country; Moreover, the agglomeration level of Korea's logistics industry needs to be improved; Finally, the positive spatial correlation and industrial agglomeration effect of Korea's logistics industry had a positive impact on the country's import and export trade. Originality/value - This study is innovative in terms of research perspective and methods. Most of the previous studies have measured the development level of the logistics industry using the logistics performance index (LPI), Fewer studies have assessed through the spatial total factor productivity and location quotient of the logistics industry in Korea to measure the efficiency index of the logistics industry in various regions of Korea and concentration degree, as well as there was almost no study on the impact of logistics industry efficiency and agglomeration effect on import and export trade in Korea. This study addresses this limitation by analyzing the impacts of the efficiency and agglomeration effect of the logistics industry on import and export trade in Korea.

  • Using geographical indication, a type of source identification, can effectively promote local specialty agricultural products of superior quality, by identifying the specific geographic location or origin of the produce. Agricultural products can be registered using the geographical indication by describing the product's relation to its geographical origin including the reputation and quality. However, this indication has no objective standards to qualify goods as agricultural specialty products. The purpose of this study is to suggest basic criteria to define the characteristics and criteria of agricultural specialties based on a quantitative evaluation method. To propose this basic standard, we used the proportion of arable land to denote the major production areas and the location quotient (LQ) index to grasp the extent of the specialty of a product. The results show that the average LQ values of registered agricultural products, particularly apples, pears, and garlic, are 3.26, 8.01, and 2.82, respectively. This indicates that they are more specialized than produce from other areas that have not registered for a geographical indication. Low LQ values were found in some areas with registered rice geographical indications, which are also more focused on their historical reputation as the main rice producing areas. Considering the agricultural specialty of products, the recommendation is that the producing proportion should be over 1% of the national scale and over 10% of the province scale, and the LQ value should be over 2.0. This recommendation is not a requirement, but the criteria can prove to be useful in identifying a higher range of specialized agricultural products.
