  • Location-aware system is utilized in various fields such as Logistics, Home Network, Healthcare, Military and Transportation systems. In this paper, we designed and implemented a Location-aware system based on IEEE 802.15.4a CSS (Chirp Spread Spectrum) technology in variable environment. The CSS is possible to precision location awareness using RF signal. According to experimental result, the implemented system has recognition error less than 0.5m within 20m radius in space.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the performance of zone-based registration and distance-based registration. First, we propose the mobility model which can be used to analyze the performance of both zone-based registration and distance-based registration. And using the proposed mobility model, we obtain several performance measures and perform numerical computation to compare the performance of two registration methods. Numerical results show that in general zone-based registration needs less number of registration than distance-based registration. On the other hand, if distance-based registration is used, registration load is equally distributed to all cells in a location area and ping-pong phenomenon is not occurred. And when a VLR area is composed of a few location areas, distance-based registration may need less registration load than zone-based registration. Therefore, a proper registration method should be selected considering system circumstances and implementation complexity, and the selected method should be implemented so as to change system parameters according to system circumstances.

  • Recently, indoor locating using beacon has gained much attention as an indoor locating technology. This technology has been used for various indoor LBS(location-based services). However, there is a lack of research on LBS service specialized in university yet. In this paper, we designed and implemented a smart LBS system using beacon for campus and class guide in the university. This system provides for campus and class guide services based on the current specific location in the campus, This system can be improved as more precise becon technology is developed.

  • Location information is a critical element of ubiquitous computing. Cricket is an indoor location-based system that transmits radio and ultrasonic signals in regular intervals to calculate the distance between nodes. However, the amount of signal interference and collisions increases in proportion with the number of nodes, losing the accuracy of the location-based system. This study proposes an algorithm based on the 802.15.2 MAC protocol for the wireless sensor network to reduce signal interference and collision by employing node numbers and the frequency reuse approach used in mobile telecommunication. We analyzed the performance of our algorithm. The obtained results showed that the algorithm is an effective for throughput and energy compared to the Cricket system.

  • Recently, interests on positioning system for location-based services have been significantly increased. Many indoor environment systems using fingerprint scheme have been designed to take more accuracy of positioning, but they are inefficient in adapting to change of environments. In this paper, we focus on a client-based positioning system over WLAN for decreasing installation cost and adapting to change of environments. In the proposed system, APs with stable RSSI are selected as base APs independently for each reference point. Experimental results show that proposed system expands service area approximately 20% much than traditional systems using K-NN algorithm and needs only 20% modification process to fingerprint data compare with traditional systems whenever environment conditions are changed.

  • Recently, location systems using RFID technology have been studied in indoor environments. However, the existing techniques require high computational cost to compute the location of a moving object because they compare the location proximity of all reference tags and objects. In this paper, we propose an RFID based location positioning scheme using event filtering, which reduces the computation cost of calculating the locations of moving objects while maintaining the accuracy of location estimation. In addition, we propose an incremental location update policy to reduce the location update cost for moving objects. We also compare the proposed scheme with one of the localization schemes, LANDMARC using a performance evaluation. As a result, the proposed scheme outperforms LANDMARC in terms of the computational cost of location estimation. The proposed scheme also reduces the cost of location update by using the RFID-based update policy.

  • Map rendering, positioning, database managements are key elements of location based services. Google map and GPS (Global Positioning System) have become a very popular solution for map rendering and positioning, respectively. They are very effective and yet free of charge. However, they cannot be used for an indoor location based service system. We cannot render a building drawing with Google map, we cannot determine a moving object's position when it is indoor. This paper introduces our web services of rendering drawings, indoor positioning, and multimedia contents up-loading and playing so that any programmers can use them in developing indoor location based service systems. In order to experimentally show the efficiency of our web services, we have built a location based contents displaying system for museum visitors with them.

  • The location of inspection stations is a significant component of production systems. In this paper, a prototype expert system is designed for deciding the optimal location of inspection stations. The production system is defined as a single channel of n serial operation stations. The potential inspection station can be located after any of the operation stations. Nonconforming units are generated from a compound binomial distribution with known parameters at any given operation station. Traditionally Dynamic programming, Zero-one integer programming, or Non-linear programming techniques are used to solve this problem. However a problem with these techniques is that the computation time becomes prohibitively large when t be number of potential inspection stations are fifteen or more. An expert system has the potential to solve this problem using a rule-based system to determine the near optimal location of inspection stations. This prototype expert system is divided into a static database, a dynamic database and a knowledge base. Based on defined production systems, the sophisticated rules are generated by the simulator as a part of the knowledge base. A generate-and-test inference mechanism is utilized to search the solution space by applying appropriate symbolic and quantitative rules based on input data. The goal of the system is to determine the location of inspection stations while minimizing total cost.
