A Study on the Periodic Transient Response Characteristics in Annular Fin with Uniform Thickness (均一두께의 環狀흰에서 週期的 過渡應答 特性에 관한 硏究)

  • This study presents an analysis of periodic heat diffusion in an annular fin with uniform thickness. When the temperature of the fin base is changed in the form of a sinusoidal function, the exact temperature solution can be obtained by Laplace transformation in terms of the dimensionless parameters in the infinite series. Local heat flux and average heat flux, local fin efficiency and average fin efficiency were obtained. Particularly, the table of eigenvalues that are the indispensable condition in solving the heat transfer problem of annular fin in a transient state with convection phenomena at the fin edge is provided. The tables of heat fluxes and average heat fluxes, fin efficiencies and average fin efficiencies are also provided from the computed results. Also, substituting the variations of dimensionless parameters into the these exact solutions, the characteristics of these response are investigated.

  • Nowdays ITS is being installed in each local autonomous entity, and BIS installation and operation is prior to other ITS sub systems for the public service. The methods of positioning md wireless communication in BIS are DSRC+DSRC, GPS+wireless communication, Beacon+Beacon, which are chosen and operated as the local features. Before this study, the before and after survey of BIS' quality have only been done without performance evaluation of BIS. So the method of BIS' evaluation have been established including performance test in this paper. And the evaluation of some BIS' reliability and efficiency have been done using the reliability of arriving data and the wireless communication response rates after choosing typical BIS' sub system.

  • In general, the strength of hull structures can be estimated from stress evaluation considering static and hydro-dynamic load due to sea-wave. However, war ships such as submarine, have frequently experienced the underwater explosion and local structures of ship as well as hull girder can be damaged by the dynamic response excited from underwater non-contact explosion. When explosion happens at underwater, shock wave is radiated In early short time, then gas bubbles are generated, and expansion and contraction are repeated as they float to the surface. The shock wave causes the damage of equipment and its supporting structures, on the other hand, the hull girder strength can be lost by resonance between bubble pulsation and lowest ship natural vibration period. In this paper, the hydro-Impulse force due to bubble was calculated. Based on these results the hull girder strength of submarine was estimated from transient response analysis by using NASTRAN. Also, shock analysis for some equipment supporting structures was carried out by using DDAM. In order to evaluate the strength of these local structures due to shock wave.

Dynamic Response Analysis of Top-tensioned Riser Under Sheared Current Load (전단류 하중을 받는 상부장력 라이저의 동적 응답 해석)

  • A numerical scheme based on a mode superposition method is presented for the dynamic response analysis of a top-tensioned riser (TTR) under sheared current loads. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the TTR have been calculated analytically for a beam with a slowly varying tension and pinned-pinned boundary conditions at the top and bottom ends. The lift coefficients and corresponding amplitudes used to estimate the vortex-induced modal force and damping for each mode were predicted via iterative calculations based on the input and output power balancing concept. Here, the power-in regions were controlled by the normal distribution function, for which the center was coincident with the lock -in location by local vortex-shedding, and the range was defined by the constant standard deviation for the reduced velocity by the local current speed. Finally, dynamic responses such as root-mean-squared displacement and stress were calculated using the mode superposition technique. In order to verify the presented scheme, a numerical calculation was performed for a TTR under an arbitrary linearly sheared current and linearly varying tension. A comparison with the results of the existing software showed that the presented scheme could give reliable and feasible solutions. Case studies were performed to investigate the effects of various current loads and tensions.

Evaluation of seismic strengthening techniques for non-ductile soft-story RC frame

  • Open ground story (OGS) reinforced concrete (RC) buildings are vulnerable to the complete collapse or severe damages under seismic actions. This study investigates the effectiveness of four different strengthening techniques representing the local and global modifications to improve the seismic performance of a non-ductile RC OGS frame. Steel caging and concrete jacketing methods of column strengthening are considered as the local modification techniques, whereas steel bracing and RC shear wall systems are selected as the global strengthening techniques in this study. Performance-based plastic design (PBPD) approach relying on energy-balance concept has been adopted to determine the required design force demand on the strengthening elements. Nonlinear static and dynamic analyses are carried out on the numerical models of study frames to assess the effectiveness of selected strengthening techniques in improving the seismic performance of OGS frame.. Strengthening techniques based on steel braces and RC shear wall significantly reduced the peak interstory drift response of the OGS frame. However, the peak floor acceleration of these strengthened frames is amplified by more than 2.5 times as compared to that of unstrengthened frame. Steel caging technique of column strengthening resulted in a reasonable reduction in the peak interstory drift response without substantial amplification in peak floor acceleration of the OSG frame.

  • This study is to observe and activate a groping of education based on the perceptual responses from the teachers and the students in fisheries schools. The conclusions of this study are as follows : First, lower level of the perceptual response was estimated in the curriculum and experimental courses, the financial and administrative supports from the Government, the contribution of a fisheries high school to the local society the wages of seamen and the co-works between the industries and the academies. Second, a careful consideration is needed for the fisheries school to have a different shape. As one way for co-works of the industries and the academies, two year program in school and one year internship in a related company should be formed for the curriculum in a fisheries high school. A localized support for sea area, a fisheries high school's role as a re-eaducation for the seamaen and opening a educational graduate school for teachers in the fisheries university are pursued. Third, the perceptual response from the teachers and the students are globally weighted in the acquisition of the license with a graduation of the school and then the credit for the military services, the entering into the same area of the higher education, the expansion of the experimental materials in the courses, developing the curriculum, the Governmental supports and the awareness for the local society, in order. The issues indicated here should be researched continuously for activating the education in the fisheries high schools.

Parametric study on eccentrically-loaded partially encased composite columns under major axis bending

  • This paper presents a detailed parametric study, conducted using finite element tools to cover a range of several geometric and material parameters, on the behaviour of thin-walled partially encased composite (PEC) columns. The PEC columns studied herein are composed of thin-walled built-up H-shaped steel sections with concrete infill cast between the flanges. Transverse links are provided between the opposing flanges to improve resistance to local buckling. The parametric study is confined to eccentrically-loaded columns subjected to major axis bending only. The parameters that were varied include the overall column slenderness ratio (L/d), load eccentricity ratio (e/d), link spacing-to-depth ratio (s/d), flange plate slenderness ratio (b/t) and concrete compressive strength ($f_{cu}$). The overall column slenderness ratio was chosen to be the primary variable with values of 5, 10 and 15. Other parameters were varied within each case of L/d ratio. The effects of the selected parameters on the behaviour of PEC columns were studied with respect to the failure mode, peak axial load, axial load versus average axial strain response, axial load versus lateral displacement response, moment versus lateral displacement behaviour and the axial load-moment interaction diagram. The results of the parametric study are presented in the paper and the influences of each of the parameters investigated are discussed.

Estimation of Freight Trip Generation Rates based on Commodity Flow Survey in Korea

  • In Korea, almost 700 industrial parks are under operation. Generally, industrial parks consist of national industrial parks and local industrial parks which are managed by a central government and by local governments respectively. The developing countries such as Korea, China and Vietnam etc. have constructed many industrial parks, which result in the change of land use pattern and also affect future trip demands. Therefore, in estimating traffic demands, it is very important to consider the industrial park development. This study aims to improve the methodology in estimating a freight trip generation rate with the data based on a nationwide commodity freight survey. The result showed that it is desirable to apply freight trip generation rate by the industry sector in estimating freight trip generations and using the production area of firm as an indicator. Specially, the reliability of the rates through a survey could be made sure because a sample rate based on firms in industrial parks was over 25% and the response rate was over 67%. The sample rate and response rate are very superior as compared to surveys conducted in many other countries. Because industrial parks have significant effects on forecasting transportation demand in pre-feasibility studies of transport and logistics projects, it is expected that the accuracy of freight trip demands would be improved through the results of this study.

  • To enable the government and local authorities to anticipate the public's response to emergency measures, it is crucial to formulate theories on residents' behavioral reactions and establish appropriate evaluation models that cater to local conditions. However, prior research has primarily relied on simple surveys to assess individual disaster preparedness progress, while in the United States, the National Household Survey explores the behavior, attitudes, and motivations of citizens. Nonetheless, relying on simple survey analyses presents limitations. Therefore, our study aims to develop a social science behavioral analysis model that includes risk perception and emergency preparedness evaluation items for drought. We will achieve this by examining both domestic and foreign behavioral models. The ultimate goal is to present an effective response strategy for managing drought risk that incorporates the developed model. The drought risk perception and behavioral model employed in this study involves evaluating individual risk perception of drought disasters, individual effectiveness, and motivation analysis for drought disasters, government satisfaction with drought disaster management, and individual acceptance of drought prevention policies.

Proposal of Strength-Based Design Procedure for Improving the Seismic Performance of Steel Ordinary Moment Frames (철골 보통모멘트골조의 내진성능 향상을 위한 강도기반 설계 절차 제안)

  • The ductility of the system based on the capacity of each structural member constituting the seismic force-resisting system is a significant factor determining the structure's seismic performance. This study aims to provide a procedure to supplement the current seismic design criteria to secure the system's ductility and improve the seismic performance of the steel ordinary moment frames. For the study, a nonlinear analysis was performed on the 9- and 15-story model buildings, and the formation of collapse mechanisms and damage distribution for dynamic loads were analyzed. As a result of analyzing the nonlinear response and damage distribution of the steel ordinary moment frame, local collapse due to the concentration of structural damage was observed in the case where the influence of the higher mode was dominant. In this study, a procedure to improve the seismic performance and avoid inferior dynamic response was proposed by limiting the strength ratio of the column. The proposed procedure effectively improved the seismic performance of steel ordinary moment frames by reducing the probability of local collapse.
