Enhancement of Borneo's Indegenous Design

  • Derivation of modern products from the by gone age has contributed much for the new modern living. It has been generally recognized that the various ethnicities in Borneo with different backgrounds had made Borneo a place of cultural diversity. However as time passed, most indigenous products are no longer in used or are stored in poor condition. Most products nearly aged over a century are still in a good condition with invaluable sentiments. Indigenous product is an artifact that had been designed and used by certain community of people such as tools, clothing, crafts and goods. Each design may have its own identity to the community. Some of the indigenous products which are no longer in use at present are kept by the community as their collections. The research reveals similarities in the interests of indigenous products, concerns and realities of indigenous communities from the different regions. The study suggests that learning about indigenous materials, such as hand-made products and machine-made products is necessary for the local industry to develop a product identity that is distinctly local. Most indigenous products show evidence of connections to old traditions, yet are new to the design market.

  • 1997년 국제 외환위기를 거치면서 한국정부는 미래의 새로운 경제적 활로를 모색하게 되었는데, 이미 경제적으로 괄목할만한 성과를 거둔 영국의 세계도시 전략과 창조산업이 주요한 본보기가 되었다. 한국의 중앙정부는 경제적 효과를 극대화하기 위해 창조산업을 한국의 사회적 환경에 맞도록 변용하였는데 이로부터 문화콘텐츠산업이 탄생하게 되었고, 이를 정책적 차원에서 적극적으로 지원하였다. 한국의 고유한 문화전통을 기반으로 세계적인 문화산업으로 육성하기 위해 시작된 문화콘텐츠 진흥정책으로 인해 다양한 문화전통을 간직하고 있는 안동은 재발견되었다. 안동 지방정부와 대학과 유림가문을 중심으로 한 지역 주도층들은 이 진흥정책이 침체된 안동의 지역경제를 활성화하는데 새로운 전기가 될 뿐만 아니라 지역의 고루한 이미지를 탈피하는데 도움을 준다고 판단하였기 때문에 문화콘텐츠산업을 적극적으로 수용하고 진흥하였다. 문화콘텐츠 산업이 주목한 안동의 문화전통은 유교뿐만 아니라 기층문화로 여겨지던 무속이나 불교 등이었다. 이로부터 상대적으로 안동 지역민 사이에는 다양한 문화전통들 중에서 어떤 것을 지역의 진정한 전통문화로 선택할 것인지에 대해 이견이 발생했다. 서로 결이 다른 지역 정체성들이 전략적으로 타협되면서 공존하게 되는데, 이는 문화적 다양성이 관광의 활성화를 통해 지역경제를 되살리는데 중요할 뿐만 아니라 제한된 자원을 둘러싼 다른 지역들과의 경쟁에서 우월적 지위를 차지하는데 도움을 주었기 때문이다.

Analysis of Designation and Symbolic Meanings of Floral Emblems in South Korea as Elements of Garden Tourism and Design

  • This study was conducted to analyze the current state and symbolic meanings of floral emblem designation in local governments of South Korea. The scope of local governments subject to analysis was limited to special city, metropolitan city, province, self-governing province, city, self-governing city, county and district based on their administrative divisions. The floral emblems of local governments and their symbolic meanings as of 2019 were examined. A total of 44 plant species were designated as floral emblems. Many plant species with high designation frequency were included in Rhododendron spp., Rosa spp., Camellia spp., Magnolia spp., and Prunus spp.. Plant species with higher designation frequency tended to have more symbolic meanings. A total of 155 terms were used for the symbolic meanings assigned to all the designated floral emblems. The major symbolic meanings were relevant to material affluence or economic growth, community spirit, and personality generally required from local residents. Most of the plant species linked to the top 10 most frequently assigned terms in symbolic meaning were those of the top 10 most frequently designated floral emblems. In the case of floral emblems with high designation frequency, it was shown that they were linked with various symbolic meanings in order to grant identity with regional distinctiveness and differentiation, regardless of the symbolic meaning that the designated flowers generally have. However, the floral emblems with low designation frequency seem to have relatively strong physical or emotional relevance with local governments and thus are expected to have high utilization in regional branding and tourism marketing.

  • 공공도서관은 지역사회를 위한 지식정보의 센터인 동시에 게이트웨이이다. 따라서 자치단체의 재정지원으로 운영되어야 하며 행정당국이 도서관 정책문제를 책임져야 한다. 그러나 최근에 국내 공공도서관은 정체성과 공공성의 훼손, 경영관리의 아웃소싱 또는 위탁, 행정체계의 난맥, 외연확대와 같은 여러 정책적 도전에 직면하고 있다. 이 논문은 서울시와 인천시의 공공도서관 인프라 및 정책의 현주소를 분석하고 양대 자치단체의 도서관재단 설립과 경영위탁을 중심으로 자치단체 도서관정책의 사도와 정도를 제시하는데 목적이 있다.

  • This writing is to understand some trends and its meaning of Regionalism Architecture in Jeju Island since 1950's. This thesis began with an interest in the identity crisis implicit in the simultaneous striving for modernism and the so-called regional values in Jeju Island. Regionalism is a response in architectural terms to re-establish continuity in a given place between past and present forms, and also a unique result related to particular places, cultures and climates in region. This is one way of looking at the issues of regional identity. The study began by observing the general characteristics of contemporary ideas on Regionalism in Jeju architecture. This means that tracing the history of development of Regionalism architecture in research area is not the focus of this thesis. The thesis demonstrates that Regionalism architectures in Jeju shows some trends related to the local cultural elements (or ideas) such like traditional architectural forms, natural environment, local construction-materials, etc. In summation, in the perspective of Regionalism architecture,mostofbuildingsin Jeju bring out them only as vernacular architecture as it was once produced, by the simple combination and imitation without any creative interaction of the regional culture. I stress the point in this paper that, in over the last fifty years, there have been very narrowed attempts to design the regional values in the main, and also point out that there are problems in the manner in which local architects have gone about trying to define the regional themes. So, a grate depth is required to understand the phenomenon that Jeju area is with its various nuances of traditions, art, culture, climate and light and then to reinterpret it into the modern building type with all the high sense. In addition to that, some conclusions are reached on future directions and the significance of the study.

Southeast Asian Studies: Insiders and Outsiders, or is Culture and Identity a Way Forward?

  • Debates continue to multiply on the definition and rationale of Southeast Asia as a region and on the utility of the multidisciplinary field of area studies. However, we have now entered a post-colonialist, post-Orientalist, post-structuralist stage of reflection and re-orientation in the era of globalization, and a strong tendency on the part of insiders to pose these issues in terms of an insider-outsider dichotomy. On the one hand, the study of Southeast Asia for researchers from outside the region has become fragmented. This is for very obvious reasons: the strengthening and re-energizing of academic disciplines, the increasing popularity of other non-regional multidisciplinary studies, and the entry of globalization studies into our field of vision. On the other hand, how has the local Southeast Asian academy addressed these major issues of change in conceptualizing the region from an insider perspective? In filling in and giving substance to an outsider, primarily Euro-American-Australian-centric definition and vision of Southeast Asia, some local academics have recently been inclined to construct Southeast Asia in terms of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): a nation-state-based, institutional definition of what a region comprises. Others continue to operate at a localized level exploring small-scale communities and territories, while a modest number focus on sub-regional issues (the Malay-Indonesian world or the Mekong sub-region are examples). However, further reflections suggest that the Euro-American-Australian hegemony is a thing of the past and the ground has shifted to a much greater emphasis on academic activity within the region. Southeast Asia-based academics are also finding it much more important to network within the region and to capture, understand, and analyze what Chinese, Japanese, and Korean scholars are saying about Southeast Asia, its present circumstances and trajectories, and their increasingly close involvement with the region within a greater Asia-Pacific rim. The paper argues that the insider-outsider dichotomy requires considerable qualification. It is a neat way of dramatizing the aftermath of colonialism and Orientalism and of reasserting local priorities, agendas, and interests. But there might be a way forward in resolving at least some of these apparently opposed positions with recourse to the concepts of culture and identity in order to address Southeast Asian diversities, movements, encounters, hybridization, and hierarchies.

도시재생 사례에 대한 공공디자인 특성 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Evaluation of Public Design Characteristics in Urban Regeneration Cases)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide basic data on effective urban regeneration projects and development directions for improving the quality of life of local residents by analyzing urban regeneration projects that have been carried out so far according to evaluation items on public design characteristics. The research method was divided into literature review and case study. The research results are as follows. First, through analysis of previous research, seven evaluation items for public design characteristics were derived: publicness, accessibility, regional identity, aesthetics, communication, functionality, and sustainability. The research subjects were four urban regeneration project cases carried out across the country. Second, among the seven evaluation items for public design characteristics, publicness was all highly applied, but the other six items were applied differently in each case. Third, to increase sustainability, we must use eco-friendly materials and consider sustainable maintenance methods, functionality must be strengthened in terms of functionality and comfort of public facilities and public spaces, and communicability must be improved for local tourists. We actively look for ways to communicate with the public, accessibility involves incorporating more universal design, aesthetics focuses on adding beauty to spaces and facilities, and regional identity focuses on the unique and unique characteristics of each region. We suggest finding a theme and actively using it in urban regeneration projects. Lastly, for an urban regeneration project to be successful, it is necessary to effectively apply not only publicness but also accessibility, local identity, aesthetics, communication, functionality, and sustainability. In the future, public design characteristics should be more actively applied and considered in urban regeneration projects.

  • 제주지역은 지역별 인구대비 등록 미술관 수가 전국 최고이나 상대적으로 낮은 인지도로 대중과의 소통에 뒤떨어져 있어 시대에 맞는 홍보대안이 필요하다. 호감도와 접근도면에서 탁월하고 정보의 아이덴티티를 제공하는 디자인 QR코드가 미술관의 홍보매개체로 다양하게 활용되고 있으나 제주지역 등록 미술관의 대부분이 디자인 QR코드의 개발이 미비하여 현실적으로 실현 가능한 디자인 개발이 필요한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 제주지역 등록 공립미술관 6개소의 Museum Identity현황을 기표와 기의로 나누어 의미체계를 분석하고 분석한 자료를 바탕으로 개발 선정한 4개소의 Museum Identity를 반영한 QR코드디자인을 개발하였다. 개발된 디자인 QR코드를 가치적 특성에 따른 디자인의 활용 사례로 제안한 연구이다.

지역학습에 있어서 민족정체성과 지역정체성의 관계 - 제주 지역교과서 분석은 사례로 - (The Relation between Regional Identity and National Identity in Regional Learning - A Case Study of Regional Textbook in Jeju Province -)

  • 본 연구는 지역교과서에 나타난 민족정체성과 지역정체성의 관계를 분의하고 있다. 지역교과서는 지역학습의 자원이며, 다른 지역과의 영역적 차이를 기본 전제로 하면서 지역정체성을 재현한다. 교육과정 수준에서 지역학습의 교육인간상은 지역정체성의 함양을 추구하지만, 민족국가로서의 정치적 단일성을 고려하고 있다. 이른바 민족적 단일성은 지역의 문화적 다양성이 융합된 양상으로 보고 있다 그런데, 다른 지역에 비해 고유성이 상대적으로 강한 사례 지역의 교과서에서는 민족과 지역 간의 상보성이 왜곡되어 있다. 예컨대, 지역의 통상적인 담론세계에서 유교문화경관은 타자이지만, 학교 교과서에서는 동일자이다. 또한 지역교과서에서 대외적인 영역화의 경계는 주로 지역이라기 보다는 민족이고. 민족의 변방으로 지역에 대한 장소감을 낳고 있다. 즉, 제주 지역교과서에서 지역정체성은 민족정체성을 고려하여 제한적으로 재현되고 있다. 다시 말해서, 지역학습에서 온당하게 다루어져 할 지역정체성의 추구가 주변화되고 있다

이주민 집단의 종족과 국가에 대한 인식: 자카르타의 아쩨인 공동체 사례연구 (The Ethnicity and National Identity among Transmigrant: The Acehnese Community in Jakarta)

  • This thesis aims to analyze the political, social, and cultural activities of the Acehnese ethnic group living in Jakarta, Indonesia. Based on analysis, this thesis examines how their ethnicity and national identity have been formed and expressed. For this purpose, this study deals with Taman Iskandar Muda (hereinafter referred to as TIM), a group of Acehnese transmigrants living in Jakarta. The immigration of the Acehnese to Jakarta started in the 1950s and the number of Acehnese people living in Jakarta persently amounts to 100,000. TIM, which was organized by the first generational of immigrants, functions to group Acehnese immigrants of various generations and class. Forum Keprihatinan Untuk Aceh(hereinafter referred to as Forka), an organization designed to solve the political problems of TIM, undertook various activities to maintain the peace of Aceh as the representative of TIM. Through those activities, TIM and Forka were able to confirm the feeling of homogeneity among the Acehnese who were living in their hometown and also strengthen their identity within the organizations. However, the fact that TIM and Forka put their focus on humanitarian activities paradoxically shows the political limitations that they sustain. TIM and Forka take care not to make their humanitarian activities seem as if they intend to openly strengthen their Acehnese identity and deny their Indonesian one. These political characteristics of Forka's identity are commonly found in groups that practice long-distance nationalism, as transmigrants in diaspora circumstances do. In the organization of TIM, there exists the menasah, which is a space where discussions of the ethnicity and the nation are practiced. As it is the space for local exchange, menasah reveals the identity of TIM through educational/social activities and public services. Menasah functions as the public arena where people practice ethnic identity on the basis of national integration. As a minority ethnic group living in Jakarta and its neighborhood, they are accustomed to double and selective political activities, social activities, and cultural practices. In order to adapt themselves to the double circumstance that they are faced with, they should live extemporaneously, and this life may be the fate that minority ethnic and transmigrants should endure.
