This paper is concerned with the optimal seismic design of added viscous dampers in yielding plane frames. The total added damping is minimized for allowable values of local performance indices under the excitation of an ensemble of ground motions in both regular and irregular structures. The local performance indices are taken as the maximal inter-story drift of each story and/or the normalized hysteretic energy dissipated at each of the plastic hinges. Gradients of the constraints with respect to the design variables (damping coefficients) are derived, via optimal control theory, to enable an efficient first order optimization scheme to be used for the solution of the problem. An example of a ten story three bay frame is presented. This example reveals the following 'fully stressed characteristics' of the optimal solution: damping is assigned only to stories for which the local performance index has reached the allowable value. This may enable the application of efficient and practical analysis/redesign type methods for the optimal design of viscous dampers in yielding plane frames.

This study presents an algorithm that determines the optimal configuration of the FMSs with limited local buffers. The algorithm finds the lowest cost configuration, i.e. the number of tools, the number of pallets as well as the number of buffers to be installed in front of each machine in the system. Thus it assures a given production ratio with a minimum cost. In the algorithm, FMSs are considered as the closed queueing network with limited queue length. System performance evaluation is performed using the Block-&-Recirculation model developed by Yao and Buzacott. The algorithm is composed with three steps. The steps are namely i) determination of a lower configuration, ii) derivation of an heuristic solution, and iii) obtaining the optimal solution. The computational efforts required in the algorithm usually lies within the capability of personal computers.

As the performance of computers increases, the use of deep learning, which has faced technical limitations in the past, is becoming more diverse. In many fields, deep learning has contributed to the creation of added value and used on the bases of more data as the application become more divers. The process for obtaining a better performance model will require a longer time than before, and therefore it will be necessary to find an optimal model that shows the best performance more quickly. In the artificial neural network modeling a tuning process that changes various elements of the neural network model is used to improve the model performance. Except Gride Search and Manual Search, which are widely used as tuning methods, most methodologies have been developed focusing on heuristic algorithms. The heuristic algorithm can get the results in a short time, but the results are likely to be the local optimal solution. Obtaining a global optimal solution eliminates the possibility of a local optimal solution. Although the Brute Force Method is commonly used to find the global optimal solution, it is not applicable because of an infinite number of hyper parameter combinations. In this paper, we use a statistical technique to reduce the number of possible cases, so that we can find the global optimal solution.
Micro-droplet cell with free droplet as a micro-electrochemical technique has been limited to apply to electrochemical systems with high wetting properties such as an acidic solution and low grade stainless steels(Type 316L). By loading negative pressure to a droplet, control of droplet size, and use of hydrophobic gasket, the cell is modified to be allowed to use for electrochemical systems with high wetting properties. For giving the reliability of new cell, studies on local corrosion were conducted for three different systems-an acidic chloride solution and high chromium ferritic stainless steel, the other acidic chloride solution and type 316, and a neutral chloride solution and type 316. stainless steel. Firstly, the modified micro-droplet cell allows the anodic polarization curves in an acidic chloride solution to show the fact that the local corrosion of high chromium stainless steel near the $\alpha/\sigma$ interface is due to the Cr depleted zone. Secondly, the local anodic polarization test of type 316 L in the other acidic chloride solution can be successfully conducted in the cell. Furthermore, the local polarization curves help elucidating the corrosion of type 316 with $\delta-ferrite$ phase. Finally, the polarization curves of type 316 L in a neutral chloride solution indicates that the factor affecting the pitting corrosion resistance was inclusions rather than $\delta-ferrite$.

In this paper, a hybridization of Evolutionary Strategy (ES) and a Two-Phase Neural Network(TPNN) is applied to the optimal environmental and economic operation. As the evolutionary computation, ES is to search for the global optimum based on natural selection and genetics but it shows a defect of reducing the convergence rate in the latter part of search, and often does not search the exact solution. Also, neural network theory as a local search technique can be used to search a more exact solution. But it also has the defect that a solution frequently sticks to the local region. So, new algorithm is presented as hybrid methods by combining merits of two methods. The hybrid algorithm has been tested on Emission Constrained Economic Dispatch (ECED) problem and Weighted Emission Economic Dispatch (WEED) problem for optimal environmental and economic operation. The result indicated that the hybrid approach can outperform the other computational efficiency and accuracy.

In this study, electrical and spectroscopic characteristics were investigated in the pin to plate discharge of 0.9% weight per unit volume saline solution. The positive and positive- and negative-going dc pulse with 5% duty ratio were applied to tungsten pin electrode. The more amount of discharge current flew in negative discharge. The temperature, which is considered as a local value in the vicinity of vapor of discharge, was about 3,000K which is much higher than the value recommended to be controlled. It can be suggested that not only the temperature of liquid but also the local temperature of vapor is monitored to investigate damages on tissue or cells in biological application.

A new local refinement scheme for spline finite element method has been proposed; this scheme involves the use of hierarchical B-spline. NURBS has been widely used in CAD; however, the local refinement of NURBS is difficult due to its tensor-product property. In this study, we attempted to use hierarchical B-splines as local refinement strategy in spline FEM. The regions of high gradients are overlapped by hierarchically-created local meshes. Knot vectors and control points in local meshes are extracted from global meshes, and they are refined using specific schemes. Proper compatibility conditions are imposed between global and local meshes. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on the basis of numerical results. Further, it is shown that by using a proposed local refinement scheme, the accuracy of the solution can be improved and it could be higher than that of the solution of a conventional spline FEM with relatively lower degrees of freedom.
In this paper we study the problem of three-dimensional layout optimization on the simplified rotating vessel of satellite. The layout optimization model with behavioral constraints is established and some effective and convenient conditions of performance optimization are presented. Moreover, we prove that the performance objective function is locally Lipschitz continuous and the results on the relations between the local optimal solution and the global optimal solution are derived.
Purpose: In the present study, the actual management state of trial contact lenses and lens care products in local optical shops was surveyed and analyzed to reduce the risk of lens complication possibly induced by neglecting lens care. Methods: The feeling of contact lens wearers during the wear of trial contact lenses was surveyed. Futhermore, the actual management state of trial contact lenses such as cosmetic lens and RGP lens and lens care products was also investigated by surveying opticians who trade contact lenses in local optical shops. Results: It was found that consumers trusted the sanitary conditions of the lens since trial cosmetic contact lens and RGP lens were cleaned before and after trails by over 98% of opticians in local optical shops. For trial cosmetic lens, cleaning with normal saline, multipurpose solution for soft lens and combination of saline and multipurpose solution were 38.5%, 40.5% and 21%, respectively, before trials. After trials, cosmetic lenses were cleaned with normal saline, multipurpose solution for soft lens and a combination of saline and multipurpose solution were 13%, 75%, and 12%, respectively. On the other hand, cleaning with normal saline, multipurpose solution for RGP lens and combination of saline and multipurpose solution were 28.5%, 38.5% and 33%, respectively, before trying trial RGP lens. After trials, RGP lenses were cleaned with normal saline, multipurpose solution for RGP lens and a combination of saline and multipurpose solution were 2.5%, 70%, and 27.5%, respectively, indicating that relatively many opticians followed the lens cleaning regimen. In local optical shops, the cleaning trial cosmetic lens was mainly conducted at every 10 days or a month and the washing cycle of cosmetic lens case was in a month or 2~3 months. The cleaning interval of trial RGP lens was primarily in a month or 2~3 months. For those lens cases, more than 75% of opticians washed them with a surfactant and then rinsed with cold water. The storing periods of lens care products were primarily in a week for saline and in a month and 2~3 months indicating that storing period of lens care products was relatively well-kept in local optical shops. Conclusions: It is thought that the concern about any microbial infection is not that high since trial contact lenses and lens care products were generally well-managed by opticians in local optical shops from the results above. However, better public eye health and better public confidence in opticians may be possible if further strengthen in avoidance of lens cleaning with saline, keep of cleaning cycles within 2 weeks and rinsing of lens cases with hot water happens.
It is important to derive reliable parameter values in the measurement-based load model development of electric power systems. However parameter estimation tasks, in practice, often face the parameter identifiability issue; whether or not the model parameters can be estimated with a given input-output data set in reliable manner. This paper introduces concepts and practical definitions of the local identifiability of model parameters. A posteriori local identifiability is defined in the sense of nonlinear least squares. As numerical examples, local identifiability of third-order induction motor (IM) model and a Z-induction motor (Z-IM) model is studied. It is shown that parameter ill-conditioning can significantly affect on reliable parameter estimation task. Numerical studies show that local identifiability can be quite sensitive to input data and a given local solution. Finally, several countermeasures are proposed to overcome ill-conditioning problem in measurement-based load modeling.
