The wear problem of wheel flange occurs at sharp curves of rail. This paper proposes a procedure for optimum design of a wheel profile wherein flange wear is reduced by improving an interaction between wheel and rail. Application of optimization method to design problem mainly depends on characteristics of design space. This paper compared local optimization method with global optimization according to sensitivity value of objective function for design variables to find out which optimization method is appropriable to minimize wear of wheel flange. Wheel profile is created by a piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial and dynamic performances are analyzed by a railway dynamic analysis program, VAMPIRE. From the optimization results, it is verified that the global optimization method such as genetic algorithm is more suitable to wheel profile optimization than the local optimization of SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) in case of considering the lack of empirical knowledge for initial design value.

This paper proposes compression of image data using neural networks based on conjugate gradient method and dynamic tunneling system. The conjugate gradient method is applied for high speed optimization .The dynamic tunneling algorithms, which is the deterministic method with tunneling phenomenon, is applied for global optimization. Converging to the local minima by using the conjugate gradient method, the new initial point for escaping the local minima is estimated by dynamic tunneling system. The proposed method has been applied the image data compression of 12 ${\times}$12 pixels. The simulation results shows the proposed networks has better learning performance , in comparison with that using the conventional BP as learning algorithm.

The travelling salesman problem (TSP) is an important combinatorial optimization problem that is used in several engineering science branches and has drawn interest to several researchers and scientists. In this problem, a salesman from an arbitrary node, called the warehouse, starts moving and returns to the warehouse after visiting n clients, given that each client is visited only once. The objective in this problem is to find the route with the least cost to the salesman. In this study, a meta-based ant colony system algorithm (ACSA) is suggested to find solution to the TSP that does not use local pheromone update. This algorithm uses the global pheromone update and new heuristic information. Further, pheromone evaporation coefficients are used in search space of the problem as diversification. This modification allows the algorithm to escape local optimization points as much as possible. In addition, 3-opt local search is used as an intensification mechanism for more quality. The effectiveness of the suggested algorithm is assessed on a several standard problem instances. The results show the power of the suggested algorithm which could find quality solutions with a small gap, between obtained solution and optimal solution, of 1%. Additionally, the results in contrast with other algorithms show the appropriate quality of competitiveness of our proposed ACSA.
This paper proposes a new measure of cost function ruggedness in local optimization with DEAS. DEAS is a computational optimization method developed since 2002 and has been applied to various engineering fields with success. Since DEAS is a recent optimization method which is rarely introduced in Korean, this paper first provides a brief overview and description of DEAS. In minimizing cost function with this non-gradient method, information on function shape measured automatically will enhance search capability. Considering the search strategies of DEAS are well designed with binary matrix structures, analysis of search behaviors will produce beneficial shape information. This paper deals with a simple quadratic function contained with various magnitudes of noise, and DEAS finds local minimum yielding ruggedness measure of given cost function. The proposed shape information will be directly used in improving DEAS performance in future work.
This paper proposes an efficient method for improving the training performance of the neural network using a hybrid of backpropagation algorithm and dynamic tunneling system. The backpropagation algorithm, which is the fast gradient descent method, is applied for high-speed optimization. The dynamic tunneling system, which is the deterministic method iwth a tunneling phenomenone, is applied for blobal optimization. Converging to the local minima by using the backpropagation algorithm, the approximate initial point for escaping the local minima is estimated by the pattern classification, and the simulation results show that the performance of proposed method is superior th that of backpropagation algorithm with randomized initial point settings.
The design of an automobile mirror actuator system needs a systematic optimization due to several variables, constraints, geometric limitations, moving angle, and so on. Therefore, this article provides the procedure of a genetic algorithm(GA) based optimization with finite element analysis for design of a mirror actuator considering design constraints, geometric limitations, moving angle. Local optimum problem in optimization design with sensitivity analysis is overcome by using zero-order overall searching method which is new optimization design method using a genetic algorithm.

Task scheduling is one of the most challenging aspects of cloud computing nowadays, and it plays an important role in improving overall performance in, and services from, the cloud, such as response time, cost, makespan, and throughput. A recent cloud task-scheduling algorithm based on the symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm not only has fewer specific parameters, but also incurs time complexity. SOS is a newly developed metaheuristic optimization technique for solving numerical optimization problems. In this paper, the basic SOS algorithm is reduced, and chaotic local search (CLS) is integrated into the reduced SOS to improve the convergence rate. Simulated annealing (SA) is also added to help the SOS algorithm avoid being trapped in a local minimum. The performance of the proposed SA-CLS-SOS algorithm is evaluated by extensive simulation using the Matlab framework, and is compared with SOS, SA-SOS, and CLS-SOS algorithms. Simulation results show that the improved hybrid SOS performs better than SOS, SA-SOS, and CLS-SOS in terms of convergence speed and makespan.
The ant colony optimization (ACO) is a probabilistic Meta-heuristic algorithm which has been developed in recent years. Originally ACO was used for solving the well-known Traveling Salesperson Problem. More recently, ACO has been used to solve many difficult problems. In this paper, we develop an ant colony optimization method to solve the maximum independent set problem, which is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we suggest a new method for local information of ACO. Parameters of the ACO algorithm are tuned by evolutionary operations which have been used in forecasting and time series analysis. To show the performance of the ACO algorithm, the set of instances from discrete mathematics and computer science (DIMACS)benchmark graphs are tested, and computational results are compared with a previously developed ACO algorithm and other heuristic algorithms.
The determination of unknown parameters in rotating machinery is a difficult task and optimization techniques represent an alternative technique for parameter identification. The Simulated Annealing(SA) and Genetic Algorithm(GA) are powerful global optimization algorithm. This paper proposes new hybrid algorithm which combined GA with SA and local search algorithm for the purpose of parameter identification. Numerical examples are also presented to verify the efficiency of proposed algorithm. And, this paper presents the general methodology based on hybrid algorithm to identify unknown bearing parameters of flexible rotors using measured unbalance responses. Numerical examples are used to ilustrate the methodology used, which is then validated experimentally.
Partial redundancy elimination (PRE) is an interesting compiler optimization because of its effectiveness and generality. Among many PRE algorithms, the one in static single assignment form (SSAPRE) has benefits over other bit-vector-based PRE algorithms. It preserves the properties of the SSA form after PRE and exploits the sparsity of the SSA form, resulting in reduced analysis and optimization time. This paper presents a practical improvement of the SSAPRE algorithm that further reduces the analysis and optimization time. The underlying idea is removing unnecessary ${\Phi}$'s during the ${\Phi}$-Insertion phase that is the first step of SSAPRE. We classify the expressions into three categories: confined expressions, local expressions, and the others. We show that unnecessary ${\Phi}$'s for confined and local expressions can be easily detected and removed. We implement our locality-based SSAPRE algorithm in a C compiler and evaluate its effectiveness with 20 applications from SPEC benchmark suites. In our measurements, on average 91 of ${\Phi}$'s identified by the original demand-driven SSAPRE algorithm are unnecessary for PRE. Pruning these unnecessary ${\Phi}$'s in the ${\Phi}$-Insertion phase makes our locality-based SSAPRE algorithm 1.8 times faster, on average, than the original SSAPRE algorithm.
