Stimuli-responsive biomaterials that alter their function through sensing local molecular cues may enable technological advances in the fields of drug delivery, gene delivery, actuators, biosensors, and tissue engineering. In this research, pH-responsive hydrogel which is comprised of dimethylaminoethyl methacylate (DMAEMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was synthesized for the effective delivery of doxorubicin (Dox) to breast cancer cells. Cancer and tumor tissues show a lower extracellular pH than normal tissues. DMAEMA/HEMA hydrogels showed significant sensitivity by small pH changes and each formulation of hydrogels was examined by scanning electron microscopy, mechanical test, equilibrium mass swelling, controlled Dox release, and cytotoxicity. High swelling ratios and Dox release were obtained at low pH buffer condition, low cross-linker concentration, and high content of DMAEMA. Dox release was accelerated to 67.3% at pH 5.5 for 6-h incubation at $37^{\circ}C$, while it was limited to 13.8% at pH7.4 at the same time and temperature. Cell toxicity results to breast cancer cells indicate that pH-responsive DMAEMA/HEMA hydrogels may be used as an efficient matrix for anti-cancer drug delivery with various transporting manners. Also, pH-responsive DMAEMA/HEMA hydrogels may be useful in therapeutic treatment which is required a triggered release at low pH range such as gene delivery, ischemia, and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Mean flows and Reynolds stresses through circular and elliptic wire-mesh screens in the wind tunnel are measured by using the hot-wire system, and flow structures are investigated. Flow in the core of the wake are nearly uniform and the shear layer is developed along the edge of the screen The turbulent kinetic energy in the core decreases at the fast rate. However turbulence components are not in local equilibrium in the shear layer. The shear layer of the circular screen develops outward according to the radial mean motion. On the other hand, 3-dimensional transverse mean motion was turned to the main mechanism for the elliptic shape of the wake to be circular at the downstream.

In contrast to the high demand for MEMS devices, microflow analysis is not feasible even for single-phase flow with conventional Navier-Stokes equation because of non-continuum effect when characteristic dimension is comparable with local mean free path. DSMC is one of particle based DNS(Direct Numerical Simulation) methods that uses no continuum assumption. In this paper, gas flow in microchannel is studied using DSMC. Interfacial shear and flow characteristics are observed and compared with the results of gas flow that is in contact with liquid case and solid wall case. The simulation is limited to the case of equilibrium steady state and evaporation/condensation coefficient is assumed to be the same and unity. System temperature remains constant and the interfacial shear appears to be small compared to the result with solid wall. This is because particles evaporated and reflected from the liquid surface form high density layer near the interface with liquid flow.
The plasmasphere is filled with the ions and electron transported mostly from the mid-latitude ionosphere. In the topside ionosphere where the $O^+$ ions are still major ions, the $O^+$ ions are in chemical equilibrium with the $H^+$ ions and exchange their charges with each other's parent atoms with similar rates in both reactions. During the day, the newly produced $H^+$ ions flow upward to fill the plasmasphere while they flow downward and contribute to the maintenance of the ionospheric density at night under the geomagnetically quiet condition. The ionosphere and plasmasphere are coupled by these plasma fluxes and therefore strongly affect each other. In order to study these coupling we utilized the plasma density measurements from JASON satellite. This satellite measures vertical total electron content (TEC) from the ground to the satellite orbit (about 1336 km) and slant TEC from the satellite orbit to much higher GPS satellites by using the on-board dual-frequency altimeter and GPS receiver, respectively. The former measurement can represent the ionospheric TEC while the latter can represent the plasmaspheric TEC in the equatorial region. We compared these data with different seasons, solar activities and local times, and the results will be presented.

The mixed convective heat transfer problems are characterized by the relatively significant contribution of buoyancy force to the transport processes of momentum and heat. Past analytical studies on this kind of problems have been carried out by employing either the conventional R-.epsilon. turbulence model which includes constant turbulent Prandtl number .sigma.$_{+}$ 1 or an extended R-.epsilon. turbulence model which takes account of the buoyancy effect in appropriate length scale equations. But in the latter case, the temperature variance .the+a.$^{2}$ over bar is approximated by a model under local equilibrium condition and the time scale ratio between velocity and temperature is assumed to be constant. These approximation is known to break down when the buoyancy effect is dominant. The present study is aimed at development of new computational turbulence closure level which can be applied to this rather complex turbulent process. The temperature variance is obtained directly by solving its dynamic transport equation and the time scale ratio which is variable in space is computed by a solution of a dynamic equation for the rate of scalar dissipation .epsilon.$_{\thetod}$ It was found that the computational results are in good agreement with available experimental data of wide range of unstable conditions.
For the first time, nonlocal damped vibration and buckling analyses of arbitrary tapered bidirectional functionally graded solid circular nano-plate (BDFGSCNP) are presented by employing modified spectral Ritz method. The energy method based on Love-Kirchhoff plate theory assumptions is applied to derive neutral equilibrium equation. The Eringen's nonlocal continuum theory is taken into account to capture small-scale effects. The characteristic equations and corresponding first mode shapes are calculated by using a novel modified basis in spectral Ritz method. The modified basis is in terms of orthogonal shifted Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind to avoid employing adhesive functions in the spectral Ritz method. The fast convergence and compatibility with various conditions are advantages of the modified spectral Ritz method. A more accurate multivariable function is used to model two-directional variations of elasticity modulus and mass density. The effects of nanoscale, in-plane pre-load, distributed dashpot, arbitrary tapering, pinned and clamped boundary conditions on natural frequencies and buckling loads are investigated. Observing an excellent agreement between results of current work and outcomes of previously published works in literature, indicates the results' accuracy in current work.
Hybrid materials were obtained modifying the bentonite (BC) and local clay (LC) using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA) or the clay were pillared with aluminum followed by modification with HDTMA. The materials were characterized by the SEM, FT-IR and XRD analytical tools. The batch reactor data implied that the uptake of $17{\beta}$-estradiol (E2) by the hybrid materials showed very high uptake at the neutral pH region. However, at higher and lower pH conditions, slightly less uptake of E2 was occurred. The uptake of E2 was insignificantly affected changing the sorptive concentration from 1.0 to 10.0 mg/L and the background electrolyte (NaCl) concentrations from 0.0001 to 0.1 mol/L. Moreover, the sorption of E2 by these hybrid materials was fairly efficient since within 30 mins of contact time, an apparent equilibrium between solid and solution was achieved, and the data was best fitted to the PSO (pseudo-second order) and FL-PSO (Fractal-like-pseudo second order) kinetic models compared to the PFO (pseudo-first order) model. The fixed-bed column results showed that relatively high breakthrough volume was obtained for the attenuation of E2 using these hybrid materials, and the loading capacity of E2 was estimated to be 75.984, 63.757, 58.965 and 49.746 mg/g for the solids BCH, BCAH, LCH and LCAH, respectively.
Crippling stress and failure behavior of Z-section graphite/epoxy composite laminated stringers are investigated by the nonlinear finite element method. Stringers are idealized using 9-node laminated shell element. The complete unloading model is introduced into the finite element method for the progressive failure analysis. A modified Riks method is used to trace the post-failure equilibrium path after local buckling. Finite element results are validated with previous experimental results. The results show that the most important parameter affecting the crippling stress of Z-section stringers is the flange width. In terms of stacking sequence. the highest cripping stress is found at the stringer with $[{\pm}45/0/90]s$ lamination.
Based on a reduced displacement field, a layer-wise (LW) formulation is developed for analysis of thick shell panels which is subjected to axial tension. Employing the principle of minimum total potential energy, the local governing equations of thick panel which is subjected to axial extension are obtained. An analytical method is developed for solution of the governing equations for various edge conditions. The governing equations are solved for free and simply supported edge conditions. The interlaminar stresses in the panel are investigated by means of Hooke's law and also by means of integration of the equilibrium equations of elasticity. Dependency of the result upon the number of numerical layers in the layerwise theory (LWT) is studied. The accuracy of the numerical results is validated by comparison with the results of the finite element method and with other available results in the open literature and good agreement is seen between the results. Numerical results are then presented for the distribution of interlaminar normal and shear stresses within the symmetric and un-symmetric cross-ply thick panels with free and simply supported boundaries. The effects of the geometrical parameters such as radius to thickness and width to thickness ratio are investigated on the distribution of the interlaminar stresses in thick panels.

The thermal buckling properties of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) are studied using nonlocal Timoshenko beam model, including the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The DWCNTs are considered as two nanotube shells coupled through the van der Waals interaction between them. The geometric nonlinearity is taken into account, which arises from the mid-plane stretching. Considering the small-scale effects, the governing equilibrium equations are derived and the critical buckling temperatures under uniform temperature rise are obtained. The results show that the critical buckling temperature can be overestimated by the local beam model if the nonlocal effect is overlooked for long nanotubes. In addition, the effect of shear deformation and rotary inertia on the buckling temperature is more obvious for the higher-order modes. The investigation of the thermal buckling properties of DWCNTs may be used as a useful reference for the application and the design of nanostructures in which DWCNTs act as basic elements.
