  • System Identification is carried out for a full scale five-story holing to design a vibration controller design. Dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, damping ratios, and modes are obtained from the input/output informal ion by both sine-sweet method and white noise method. The active mass driver installed on the third floor is applied as external loading to move the building and each floor acceleration is measured and processed for the system identification. (omitted)

  • Four full-scaled partially confined and unconfined masonry panels were tested with monotonic lateral loads. To study the effects of vertical force and boundary columns, two specimens with no boundary columns were subjected to different vertical forces, while two wing-wall specimens had the column placed eccentrically and in the middle, respectively. The specimens with no boundary columns exhibited ductile rocking behavior, where the lateral strength increased with increasing vertical compression. The wing-wall specimens with columns behaved as strut-and-tie systems. The column-panel interaction resulted in greater strength, lower deformation capacity and differences in failure modes. A comparison with analytical models showed that rocking strength can be accurately estimated using vertical force and the panel aspect ratio for panels with no boundary columns. The estimation for lateral strength on the basis of a panel section area indicated scattered error for wing-wall specimens.

  • This paper investigates the effect of crumb rubber (CR) on compressive behaviour of crumb rubber concrete filled steel tube (CRCFST) stub columns. Therefore, experiments on 16 stub columns subjected to axial loading are carried out. The results show that the failure modes of CRCFST stub columns with different CR replacement ratios and CR size are similar, manifested the buckling of the outer steel tube. The axial bearing capacity and stiffness both decrease with an increase in CR replacement ratio, and with decreasing CR size.

  • A multi-scale (macro-micro) finite element framework for analysis of polycrystalline solids is suggested. The proposed frame work is strongly-coupled in a sense that the two scale calculation is performed at the same time. The issue of averaging micro-scale material stress and stiffness is addressed and a strategy is proposed. The proposed framework is implemented and applied to two examples having different geometries and loading modes. It is concluded that the proposed multi-scale framework can be used for more detailed and accurate analysis compared with the single-scale finite element analysis.

  • The electrical reliability of the power generation and distribution system of Floating Liquefied Natural Gas vessels has been analyzed according to the operating modes using Electrical Transient Analysis Program in this paper. Electricity is used for the topside processes, cargo pumps for off-loading, thrusters for heading control and marine equipment. It is very important to improve the safety, efficiency, and stability of the electrical power system for successful operation. The voltage variation of the high and the low voltage bus shall be within the primitive limitation range at normal operation loads both in steady state and in the transient state. The power system was simulated and compared with class rule for design verification.

  • HTS superconducting tapes are now commercially available for practical applications such as magnets and cables. Since superconductors in such applications are subjected to high mechanical loads that can significantly degrade the superconducting properties, mechanical properties and the strain tolerance known as the strain effect on superconducting properties are needed to be estimated for developing superconducting devices. Influences of loading mode on the Ic degradation and the interaction on strain effect were discussed in this study.

  • This study is to choose the most proper model for AGV throughout simulation of behavior of suspension to reduce trial and error because there is no AGV treating heavy weight at harbor loading and unloading at home. Therefore, we estimate the vibration modes of the various suspension applied to AGV, which is over 75 ton included the weight of two containers on 5G using the Matlab, one of the simulation programs

  • In this paper a systematic numerical analysis is performed to obtain the energy dissipation and re-centering capacities of diagonal steel braced frames subjected to cyclic loading. This diagonal steel bracing systems are fabricated with super-elastic SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) braces in order to develop a recentering seismic resistance system without residual deformation. The three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models are constructed to investigate the horizontal stiffness, drifts and failure modes of the re-centering bracing systems.

  • Recently , the use of steel fibers has been increased in flexural members and beams of concrete structures ; such as bridge decks, highway roads, runway of airport , buildings , ete.. An experimental investigation of the shear behavior of high-strength reinforced concrete beams using input steel fiber was conducted. However only a few experimental tests have been carried out under static loading . The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural and diagonal cracking , crack patters, fracture modes. The load versus strain and load versus deflection relation were obtained from the static test.

  • Although retrofitting and strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) columns by wrapping fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have become a popular technique in civil engineering, the study on reinforced high-strength concrete (HSC) columns is still not sufficient. The objective of these companion papers is to investigate the mechanical properties of reinforced HSC square columns confined by aramid FRP (AFRP) jackets under concentric compressive loading. In the part I of these companion papers, an experiment was conducted on 54 confined RC specimens and nine unconfined plain specimens, the considered parameters were the concrete strength, the thickness of AFRP jackets, and the form of AFRP wrapping. The experimental process and results are presented in detail. Subsequently, some discussions on the confinement effect, failure modes, strength, and ductility of the columns are carried out.
