  • This study investigates the effect of thermal stress on axial load and pile settlement of PHC energy piles. A series of numerical analyses were performed by controlling major influencing parameters such as pile arrangement, pile spacing, end-bearing condition, soil condition and pile cap stiffness. It is found that the characteristics of pile-load transfer are significantly affected by seasonal operation mode (i.e., cooling and heating) throughout the year. Also, the axial load under thermal loading increases with increasing the pile spacing. The settlement of the pile in sand is larger than that in clay because of the thermal stress generated. It is also found that thermal stress highly influences on the end-bearing pile, corner pile and rigidity of pile cap.

  • The construction of combined pile-raft foundations is considered as the main option in designing foundations in high-rise buildings, especially in soils close to the ground surface which do not have sufficient bearing capacity to withstand building loads. This paper deals with the geotechnical report of the Northern Fereshteh area of Tabriz, Iran, and compares the characteristics of the single pile foundation with the two foundations of pile group and geogrid. Besides, we investigate the effects of five principal parameters including pile diameter and length, the number of geogrid layers, the depth of groundwater level, and pore water pressure on vertical consolidation settlement and pore water pressure changes over a year. This study assessed the mechanism of the failure of the soil under the foundation using numerical analysis as well. Numerical analysis was performed using the two-dimensional finite element PLAXIS software. The results of fifty-four models indicate that the diameter of the pile tip, either as a pile group or as a single pile, did not have a significant effect on the reduction of the consolidation settlement in the soil in the Northern Fereshteh Street region. The optimum length for the pile in the Northern Fereshteh area is 12 meters, which is economically feasible. In addition, the construction of four-layered ten-meter-long geogrids at intervals of 1 meter beneath the deep foundation had a significant preventive impact on the consolidation settlement in clayey soils.

  • A flexible pipe was buried 10cm below the ground formed with standard sand to observe changes in the shape of the pipe according to the behavior of ground at each relative density. Changes in the shape of the pipe in each ground were observed to examine the behavior of the pipe under the state of reinforced ground after installing geogrid under the pipe. Ground reinforced using geogrid formed tensile force on the reinforcement material with increase in the vertical load and showed reduction in settlement under identical vertical load with existence of reinforcement. Distributions of ground deformation of 100% relative density and 70% relative density had clear difference. Reinforced ground with 70% density converged to the ground reaction of final settlement of non-reinforced ground with 100% density at final settlement of 100 mm. Because the shape of lower part strain of the buried pipe is similar to that of un-reinforced ground with relative density of 100%, reinforcement effect by geogrid in soft ground can be anticipated.

  • Current design of pile group is based on the estimation of the overall bearing capacity of a pile group from that of a single pile using a group efficiency. However, the behaviors of a pile group are influenced by various factors such as the method of pile installation, pile-soil-pile interaction, cap-soil-pile interaction, etc. Thus, it is practically impossible to take into account these factors reasonably with the only group efficiency. In this paper, a new method for the design of pile groups is proposed, where the significant factors affecting the behavior of a pile group are considered separately by adopting several efficiencies. Furthermore, in the proposed method, the load transfer characteristics of piles and the difference of pile behaviors with respect to the pile locations in group can be taken into account. The efficiencies for the method are determined using the settlement failure criterion, which is consistent with the concept of allowable settlement fur structures. The efficiencies calculated from the results of existing model tests are presented, and the bearing capacity of a pile group in the other model test is calculated and compared with that from the test result to verify the validity of the proposed method.

  • The characteristics of roadbed are very important factors in the design of railways. Laboratory model tests were performed to investigate the effectiveness of geogrid placement in the subbase layers on reinforcement. Design parameters of reinforcement were determined through the laboratory model tests. The results indicated that geogrid reinforcement is increased the bearing capacity and reduced the settlement of railway foundation. The optimum length of geogrid reinforcement is about 4B. The effective depth of geogrid placement from the bottom of ballast is about 0.1B-0.2B depended on magnitude of applied load.

  • The following is the result of experiment on consolidation test under various load increment ratios by alternation of standard load increment ratio. The more load increment ratio was, the more settlement was resulted. But expansions were not associated with load increment ratios. Primary consolidation took longer period to complete as load increment ratio was decreased. And under the condition of over-consolidated range, the completion of primary consolidation took longer period as the load was incremented. Under the condition of normal consolidated range, there was no change in time of completing primary consolidation. The coefficient of consolidation was decreased with increment of consolidation load, and the coefficient of consolidation had high values as the load increment ratio was increased. The values of ratio of secondary consolidation was highest near the transition point of consolidation curve.

  • Under the various variations of the sample thickness, the load increment ratio and the load increment duration, this consolidation test of the clay in the Asan Bay was tried for the comparison with the standard consolidation test. The results gained are as follows; 1. The void ratio variations of the leached-clay samples were increasingly high, according as the sample thickness thinned and the load increment duration and the laod increment ratio increased. 2. The coefficient of consolidation were increased with the increment of the sample thickness, of the load increment ratio and of the load increment duration. Near the pre-consolidation load, the coefficient of secondary consolidation had the maximum value and lessened with the increment of the sample thicknss, and of the load increment duration 3. The value of the pre-consolidation load increased in proportion to the increment of the sample thickness and the decrease of the load increment ratio and the load increment duration. 4. The compression indices increased as the increment of load increased and decreased as the sample thickness increased. 5. The initial compression ratio increased as the sample thickness, the load increment ratio and the load increment duration decreased. The ratio of primary compression to the secondary decreased with the increment of the sample thickness and of the load increment ratio. 6. The time at the completion of psimary consolidation increased with the increment of the sample thickness and of the consolidation load, and with the decrease of the load increment ratio. 7. The compression indicses increaed as the sample thickness lessened and decreased as the load increment ratio increased. The coefficient of consolidation increased according as the sample thickness, the load increment ratio and the load increment duration went up. The settlement at the construction site should be calculated highly in proportion as the sample thickness lessened and the load increment ratio increased. The consolidation ratio is thought to be accelerated if the sample thickness and the load increment ratio becomes higher and the load increment duration longer.

  • The behavior of the Top-Base foundation was investigated by carrying out 3D finite element method. Special attention is given to the settlement behavior of concrete Top-Base foundation due to the consolidation settlement of the embedding depth and the effect of footing dimensions which are not included in the practical design. To obtain the detailed informations, a series of numerical analyses were performed for different pile configurations. It is shown that as the number of piles in a group increases, the calculated settlement also increases. However, for the $7\times7$ group, there is no further increase in settlement. Based on this study, it is found that the total settlement of Top-Base foundation is highly influenced by the consolidation settlement and footing configurations. It is also found that the current design method overestimates the settlement, and thus, needs to be modified and supplemented.

  • Because general laboratory tests for sand compaction pile method including unit-cell test device have fixed outside diameter, as area replacement ratio increase, diameter of sand pile increase. These condition can bring about overestimation of stiffness of composite ground. In addition, existing large soil box which consist of bellows type loading plate can occur serious mistake in checking the amount of drained water because there are additional drainage along the inside wall in device. Overcoming these shortcoming, this paper developed modified large scale soil box consist of piston type load plate. In this study, using this device, series of modified large scale soil box tests were performed, and investigated the settlement and stress transportation characteristics with area replacement ratio in sand compaction pile method.

  • This study contains actual scaled site experiments on mediation factors affecting ultimate pulling force of the buoyancy resisting anchor which is installed underground water level suffering buoyancy force and breaking mechanism. Site buoyancy test selected the buoyancy acting site where acting buoyancy to the station structure since the stream and reservoir is neighboured to the vicinity ground and executed site experiments leading to variation of anchoring length, drilling diameter and tendon diameter at the weathered rock ground. The test result showed that pulling force getting increased more and more proportionate to increase of anchoring length, drilling diameter and tendon diameter, and as a result of analysis for correlations between anchoring length-ultimate limited load and drilling diameter-ultimate load (on the basis of 254mm settlement), modulus of correlation showed very high relation 0.9 and 0.99 respectively and correlation formular showed the limited load is increasing proportionate to cubic meters of anchoring length as well as the ultimate load proportionate to alignment of drilling diameter. It is also showed that limited load increased about 42.5% from 392kN to 559kN as a result of change the tendon diameter to 36mm and 50mm.
