An accurate hysteresis model of an elastomer is important for quantifying viscoelastic energy loss. We suggest a highly nonlinear hyper-viscoelastic constitutive model of elastomers. The model captures a nonlinear viscoelastic characteristic by combining Yeoh's hyperelastic model and Hoofatt's hysteresis model used Neo-Hookean hyperelastic model. Analytical and numerical models were generated from uniaxial cyclic tests of an elastomer under a sinusoidal load with a mean strain of 150%, amplitudes of 20~80%, and frequencies of 0.02~0.2Hz. The viscoelastic model can highly capture the viscoelastic energy loss up to a strain of 230%.

Elliptic-braced simple resisting frame as a new lateral bracing system installed in the middle bay of frame in building facades has been recently introduced. This system not only creates a problem for opening space from the architectural viewpoint but also improves the structural behavior. Despite the researches on the seismic performance of lateral bracing systems, there are few studies performed on the effect of the stiffness parameters on the elastic story drift and calculation of period in simple braced steel frames. To overcome this shortcoming, in this paper, for the first time, an analytical solution is presented for calculating elastic lateral stiffness in a simple steel frame equipped with elliptic brace subjected to lateral load. In addition, for the first time, in this study, a precise formulation has been developed to evaluate the elastic stiffness variation in a steel frame equipped with a two-dimensional single-story single-span elliptic brace using strain energy and Castigliano's theorem. Thus, all the effective factors, including axial and shear loads as well as bending moments of elliptic brace could be considered. At the end of the analysis, the lateral stiffness can be calculated by an improved and innovative relation through the energy method based on the geometrical properties of the employed sections and specification of the used material. Also, an equivalent element of an elliptic brace was presented for the ease of modeling and use in linear designs. Application of the proposed relation have been verified through a variety of examples in OpenSees software. Based on the results, the error percentage between the elastic stiffness derived from the developed equations and the numerical analyses of finite element models was very low and negligible.

The behavior of composite piles composed of steel pipe pile in the upper part and concrete pile in the lower part by a mechanical splicing joint was examined by field lateral load tests and bending tests. A total of 7 piles including two instrumented piles for bending test were installed. The soil profile consists of soft clay with weak silt with shallow groundwater level. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the basic soil characteristics and the strength parameters. This paper presents the composite pile behavior with various portions of the upper steel pile: 0, 20, 30, and 45% of the pile embedded pile length. Three-point bending tests were performed to investigate the stress-strain relation at the mechanical joint. Based on these test results, the behavior of composite piles with various upper steel pile length are evaluated and the stability of mechanical joints are examined. Through comparisons with results of field load tests, it was found that lateral load carrying capacity of the composite piles increased and deflections of the composite piles decreased with increasing the upper steel piles. The mechanical joint was proved to retain its structural stability against the tested load conditions. Economical benefits of composite pile of this kind can be gained by setting adequately the length of the upper steel pipe piles.
Reinforced-Roadbed materials are usually composed of crushed stones. Repeated load application can induce deformation in the reinforced-roadbed layer so that it causes irregularity of track. Thus it is important to develop a prediction model of elastic modulus based on stress-strain relation under repeatitive load in order to investigate behavior of reinforced roadbed. The prediction model of elastic modulus of the material can be obtained from repeated triaxial test. However, a proper size of the sample for the test must be used. In this study, a large repeatitive triaxial test apparatus with the sample size of diameter of 30 cm and height of 60cm was adapted for performing test of the crushed stone reinforced-roadbed considering large particle size to get resilient modulus Mr. The obtained resilient modulus was compared to shear modulus obtained from mid size resonant column test. The sample size effect is somewhat large enough so that it is required to design a scale factor based on similarity law in order to use smaller samples for getting elastic modulus of the crushed stone reinforced-roadbed material. A scale factor could be obtained from this study.
A rational three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model is described and implemented for evaluating the behavior of high strength concrete slabs under transverse load. The concrete was idealized by using twenty-nodded isoparametric brick elements with embedded reinforcements. The concrete material modeling allows for normal (NSC) and high strength concrete (HSC), which was calibrated based on experimental data. The behavior of concrete in compression is simulated by an elastoplastic work-hardening model, and in tension a suitable post-cracking model based on tension stiffening and shear retention models are employed. The nonlinear equations have been solved using the incremental iterative technique based on the modified Newton-Raphson method. The FE formulation and material modeling is implemented into a finite element code in order to carry out the numerical study and to predict the behavior up to ultimate conditions of various slabs under transverse loads. The validity of the theoretical formulations and the program used was verified through comparison with available experimental data, and the agreement has proven to be very good. A parametric study has been also carried out to investigate the influence of different material and geometric properties on the behavior of HSC slabs. Influencing factors, such as concrete strength, steel ratio, aspect ratio, and support conditions on the load-deflection characteristics, concrete and steel stresses and strains were investigated.
Water affects the mechanical properties of coal and stress wave propagation. To comprehensively investigate the effect of water content on the properties of coal, laboratory tests including X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, P-wave test, S-wave test, static and dynamic compression test with different water contents were conducted. The compressive strength, elastic modulus and failure strain and their mechanism of coal specimen under coupled static-dynamic load with the increased water content were observed. Meanwhile, energy transmission and dissipation characteristics of a stress wave in coal specimens with different water contents under dynamic load and its relation with the failure features, such as fragmentation and fractal dimension, of coal was analyzed. Furthermore, the dynamic interpretation of water infusion to prevent coal burst based on water infusion model of coal seam roadway was provided.
The present paper addresses the nonlinear response of a FG square plate with two smart layers as a sensor and actuator under pressure. Geometric nonlinearity was considered in the strain-displacement relation based on the Von-Karman assumption. All the mechanical and electrical properties except Poisson's ratio can vary continuously along the thickness of the plate based on a power function. Electric potential was assumed as a quadratic function along the thickness direction and trigonometric function along the planar coordinate. By evaluating the mechanical and electrical energy, the total energy equation can be minimized with respect to amplitude of displacements and electrical potential. The effect of non homogenous index was investigated on the responses of the system. Obtained results indicate that with increasing the non homogenous index, the displacements and electric potential tend to an asymptotic value. Displacements and electric potential can be presented in terms of planar coordinate system. A linear analysis was employed and then the achieved results are compared with those results that are obtained using the nonlinear analysis. The effect of the geometric nonlinearity is investigated by using the comparison between the linear and nonlinear results. Displacement-load and potential-load curves verified the necessity of a nonlinear analysis rather than a linear analysis. Improvement of the previous results (by the linear analysis) through employing a nonlinear analysis can be presented as novelty of this study.
In locations where the cost or concrete is relatively high, or in situations where the weight or concrete members is to be kept to a minimum, it may be economical to use hollow reinforced concrete vertical members. Hollow reinforced concrete columns with low axial load, moderate longitudinal steel percentage, and a reasonably thick wall were found to perform in a ductile manner at the flexural strength, similar to solid columns. However, hollow reinforced concrete columns with high axial load, high longitudinal steel percentage, and a thin wall were found to behave in a brittle manner at the flexural strength, since the neutral axis is forced to occur away from the inside face of the tube towards the section centroid and, as a result, crushing of concrete occurs near the unconfined inside face of the section. If, however, a steel tube is placed near the inside face of a circular hollow column, the column can be expected not to fail in a brittle manner by disintegration of the concrete in the compression zone. Design recommendation and example by moment-curvature analysis program for curvature ductility are presented. Theoretical moment-curvature analysis for reinforced concrete columns, indicating the available flexural strength and ductility, can be conducted providing the stress-strain relation for the concrete and steel are known. In this paper, a unified stress-stain model for confined concrete by Mander is developed for members with circular sections.

In the present study, the flow-softening behavior occurring during high temperature deformation of AZ31 Mg alloy was investigated. Flow softening of AZ31 Mg alloy was attributed to (1) thermal softening by deformation heating and (2) microstructural softening by dynamic recrystallization. Artificial neural networks method was used to derive the accurate amounts of thermal softening by deformation heating. A series of mechanical tests (High temperature compression and load relaxation tests) was conducted at various temperatures ($250^{\circ}C{\sim}500^{\circ}C$) and strain rates ($10^{-4}/s{\sim}100/s$) to formulate the recrystallization kinetics and grain size relation. The effect of DRX kinetics on microstructure evolution (fraction of recrystallization) was evaluated by the unified SRX/DRX (static recrystallization/dynamic recrystallization) approaches

Behavior of dynamic/static recrystallization during hot deformation of Cast alloy 718 was investigated. For this purpose, hot compression test and FE-simulation were conducted via Thermecmaster-Z and DEFORM-3D, respectively. The microstructural evolution during hot compression and post heat-treatment was investigated and deformation mechanism were analyzed by stress-strain curve, FE-simulation and microstructure. FE-simulation results show that the temperature difference between top-die and billet has considerable influence on the final shape of compressed specimen. The relation between applied load and processing time was predicted by the FE-simulation.
