For this study, a Peliyagoda area located on a route was selected among many sections of a CKE(Colombo to Katunayake Expressway) route in Sri-Lanka. Its subground consists of a very weak and thick peat soil named amorphous or fibrous peat. All of data, obtained in the design process of soft ground treatment were analyzed to evaluate the settlement characteristics resulted from an embankment load and to present reasonable methods for estimation of secondary compression settlement. For these purposes, soil parameters were used obtainedby field and laboratory tests the settlement analyses were conducted base on the field monitoring results within 20 months. In addition, Reasonable methods were studied to estimate primary consolidation and secondary compression settlement.
This paper presents an optimal design method for determining pile lengths of piled raft foundations. The foundation settlement is evaluated by taking into account the raft-pile-soil interaction. The analysis of settlement is simplified by using Steinbrenner's equation. Then the total pile length is minimized under the settlement constraint. An extended sequential linear programming technique combined with an adaptive step-length algorithm of pile lengths is used to solve the optimal design problem. The accuracy of the simplified settlement analysis method and the validity of the obtained optimal solution are investigated through the comparison with the actual measurement result in existing piled raft foundations.
The shortage of bearing capacity and settlement, shear deformation may occur when constructing a structure such as harbor, airport and bridge on soft ground such as marine clay, silty clay, sandy soil because it is very soft. The various ground improvement methods were applied to obtain preceding settlement of soft ground and strength increase. The vertical drain method has been used to reduce the required time for consolidation of the soft ground. Especially, the PBD (Plastic Board Drain) has been widely used among in the vertical drain method. In this study, a behavior of characteristic was evaluated by operating a compound drainage capacity test about the PBD (Plastic Board Drain) method applied in soft clay in deep depth. As a result, the settlement gradually occurred with increase of surface load. The consolidation settlement was processed with dissipation of pore pressure after surface load of $500kN/m^2$. Accordingly, it was found that change of settlement through load steps was resulted from dissipation of pore pressure. It was also found that the drainage capacity of vertical drains was considerably reduced with pressure increase and time elapse.

The present study has extended OpenSees, which is an open-source software framework DOS program for developing applications to idealize geotechnical and structural problems, for the static analysis of axial load capacity and settlement of single piles in MS Windows environment. The Windows version of OpenSees as improved by this study has enhanced the DOS version from a general purpose software program to a special purpose program for driven and bored pile analysis with additional features of pre-processing and post-processing and a user friendly graphical interface. The method used in the load capacity analysis is the numerical methods based on load transfer functions combined with finite elements. The use of empirical nonlinear T-z and Q-z load transfer curves to model soil-pile interaction in skin friction and end bearing, respectively, has been shown to capture the nonlinear soil-pile response under settlement due to load. Validation studies have shown the static load capacity and settlement predictions implemented in this study are in fair agreement with reference data from the static loading tests.
The settlement characteristics of waste landfill site must be considered in the design of sanitary landfill as well as in the course of the rehabilitation of the landfill site. Among prediction methods for settlement of landfill site, especially Gibson and Lo model and Power Creep Law have been successfully applied to the landfill site where the amount of settlement was large and the secondary settlement was obvious. Therefore, the effects of organic content on the model parameter values utilized in both Gibson Lo model and Power Creep Law were studied by using a large consolidation testing apparatus. The organic content is each 20%, 40%, 60% of total volume and consolidation load is $0.1{\sim}1.6kg/cm^2$. The main results can be summarized as follows: (1) The reference compressibility of Power Creep Law is decreased according to the increments of consolidation load: (2) The field measurement is more similar to the Power Creep Law than the Gibson and Lo model.
N-value by the SPT is one of the key parameter for settlement evaluation. However, if the ground is firm, the usual N-value is not blow count of 30cm depth penetration. In such case, if N-value is more than 50 with 30cm penetration, the N-value 50 is applied for settlement analysis. Therefore, in this study, the modified method of N-value estimation is suggested and compared the settlement by Elastic Theory, and the measured field data by Plate Load Test. As the result of this study, it is shown that the settlement by Elastic Theory with the modified N-value is more accurate than settlement by usual N-value. The application of Elastic Theory for pure sand is also evaluated in this paper.
To identify the reclamation history formed by top dredged soil reclamation layer over the original ground, various field tests and laboratory tests were conducted. Especially when the original ground was not completely consolidated, CPTu test was carried out to calculate rational settlement due to the banking load. CPTu test results showed that the degree of consolidation of weak clay ground by dredged reclamation was on average 80%. As the research area was not completely consolidated by dredged reclamation in the past, the consolidation settlement should account for the residual settlement (20%) in the case of additional banking load. When the degree of consolidation of the original ground was not taken into account, the residual consolidation was expected in excessive settlement (up to 20%) and in such case PBD (Plastic Board Drain) was not effective in obtaining desired degree of consolidation.
This paper is experimental and numerical research about the sliding behavior of cantilever retaining walls resisting surcharge loads. In experimental research, centrifuge model tests at the lg and 40 g-level were performed by changing the location of model footing and its width. Bearing capacity of model footing and characteristics of load-settlement and load-lateral displacement of retaining wall were investigated. Test results of bearing capacity were compared with modified jarquio method, based on the limit equilibrium method with elasticity theory. For the numerical analysis, the commericially available program of FLAC was used by implementing the hyperbolic constitutive relationships to compare with test result about load-settlement and load-displacement of retaining wall, bearing capacity of strip footing.

In this study, the settlement of concrete rectangular pyramid foundation on soft ground is investigated based on a finite element analysis. considering the grounding load and the grounding area of square pyramid foundation, we compensate the insufficient design bearing capacity and investigated the effect of settlement by load. Based on this study, it is found that the rectangular pyramid foundation shows the smallest settlement of three different type of foundations. As a result of this study, it was resulted that the square pyramid foundations were more effective than the crushed stone foundations by 18%. These results show that the ground pressures of the square pyramid bases are divided into horizontal and vertical stresses, so it is analyzed that the horizontal stress builds up the rigid ground on the foundation of the structure and distributes the load widely to increase the resistance to the overhead load.
Railway construction needs vast soil investigation for its infrastructure foundation designs along the planned railway path to identify the design parameters for stability and serviceability checks. The soil investigation data are usually classified and grouped to decide design input parameters per each construction section and budget estimates. Deterministic design method which most civil engineer and practitioner are familiar with has a clear limitation in construction/maintenance budget control, and occasionally produced overdesigned or unsafe design problems. Instead of using a batch type analysis with predetermined input parameters, data population collected from site soil investigation and design load condition can be statistically estimated for the mean and variance to present the feature of data distribution and optimized with a best fitting probability function. Probabilistic approach using entire feature of design input data enables to predict the worst, best and most probable cases based on identified ranges of soil and load data, which will help railway designer select construction method to save the time and cost. This paper introduces two Monte Carlo simulations actually applied on estimation of retaining wall external stability and long term settlement of organic soil in soil investigation area for a recent high speed railway project.
