  • As a basic study for establishing the input conditions of a forecasting/estimating model, used for deep-sea water drainage to the ocean, this study was carried out as follows: 1) estimating the amount of river discharge and pollutant loads into the developing region of deep sea water in the East Sea, Korea, 2) a field observation of tidal current, vertical water temperature, and salinity distribution, 3) 3-D numerical experiment of tidal current to analyze the physical oceanographic status. The amount of river discharge flowing into this study area was estimated at about $462.7{\times}103 m\^3/day$ of daily mean in 2002. Annual mean pollutant load of COD, TN, and TP were estimated at 7.02 ton-COD/day, 4.06 ton-TN/day, and 0.39 ton/day, respectively. Field observation of tidal current normally shows 20-40cm/sec of current velocity at the surface layer, and it decreases under 20cm/sec as the water depth increases. We also found a stratification condition at around 30m water depth in the observation area. The differences in water temperature and salinity, between the surface layer and the bottom layer, were about 18 C and 0.8 psu, respectively. On the other hand, we found a definite trend of 34 psu salinity water mass in the deep sea region.

  • Medical system for personal health management recently changes its paradigm from hospital service to self home care based on ubiquitous technology for healthcare anywhere at any time. The present study developed a wireless bio-signal measurement system for patients to self manage pulmonary disease and benign prostate hyperplasia(BPH), both of which are chronic diseases with increasing frequency in modern society. Velocity-type respiratory air flow transducer adapted to develop respiratory module for pulmonary disease management was simplified in structure to measure uni-directional flow since most important diagnostic parameters are evaluated on the expiratory flow signal only. Standard weight measurement technique was introduced to obtain urinary flow signal for BPH management. Three load cell signals were acquired for averaging to minimize noise, followed by accuracy evaluation. Transmission and receiver modules were also developed with user program for wireless communication. Averaged relative errors were 2.05 and 1.02% for respiratory volume and maximal flow rate, respectively, and the relative error was 2.17% for urinary volume, demonstrating that both modules enabled very accurate measurements. Wireless communication distance was verified within 15m, long enough for home care application. The present system allows the user to select a necessary measurement module on a particular health demand and to immediately provide the self-test results, thus better quality health care would be possible.

  • Excessive pronation and impact force during running are related to various running injuries. To prevent these injuries, three type of running shoes are used, such as cushioning, stability, and motion control. Although there were may studies about the effect of midsole hardness on impact force, no study to investigate biomechanical effect of motion control running shoes. The purpose of this study was to determine biomechanical difference between cushioning and motion control shoes during treadmill running. Specifically, plantar and rearfoot motion, impact force and loading rate, and insole pressure distribution were quantified and compared. Twenty male healthy runners experienced at treadmill running participated in this study. When they ran on treadmill at 3.83 m/s. Kinematic data were collected using a Motion Analysis eight video camera system at 240 Hz. Impact force and pressure distribution data under the heel of right foot were collected with a Pedar pressure insole system with 26 sensors at 360 Hz. Mean value of ten consecutive steps was calculated for kinematics and kinetics. A dependent paired t-test was used to compare the running shoes effect (p=0.05). For most kinematics, motion control running shoes reduced the range of rearfoot motion compared to cushioning shoes. Runners wearing motion control shoe showed less eversion angle during standing less inversion angle at heel strike, and slower eversion velocity. For kinetics, cushioning shoes has the effect to reduce impact on foot obviously. Runners wearing cushioning shoes showed less impact force and loading rate, and less peak insole pressure. For both shoes, there was greater load on the medial part of heel compared to lateral part. For pressure distribution, runners with cushioning shoes showed lower, especially on the medial heel.

  • This study was to perform the kinetic analysis of forward $1\frac{1}{2}$ somersault on the platform diving. Six men's diving players of the Korea national reserve athletes participated in this study. The variables were analyzed response time, velocity, center of mass (COM), angle, center of pressure (COP) and ground reaction force (GRF) of motion. For measure and analysis of this study, used to synchronized to 4 camcorder and 1 force plate, used to the Kwon3D XP (Ver. 4.0, Visol, Korea) and Kwon GRF (Ver. 2.0, Visol, Korea) for analyzed of variables. The results were as follows; Time factor were observed in maximum knee flexion depending on the extent of use at phase 1 of take-off to execute the somersault. This enabled the subject to secure the highest possible body position in space at the moment of jumping to execute the somersault and prepare for the entry into the water with more ease. Regarding the displacement of COM, all subjects showed rightward movement in the lateral displacement during technical execution. Changes in forward and downward movements were observed in the horizontal and vertical displacements, respectively. In terms of angular shift, the shoulder joint angle tended to decrease on average, and the elbow joints showed gradually increasing angles. This finding can be explained by the shift of the coordinate points of body segments around the rotational axis in order to execute the half-bending movement that can be implemented by pulling the lower limb segments toward the trunk using the upper limb segments. The hip joint angles gradually decreased; this accelerated the rotational movement by narrowing the distance to the trunk. Movement-specific shifts in the COP occurred in the front of and vertical directions. Regarding the changes in GRF, which is influenced by the strong compressive load exerted by the supporting feet, efficient aerial movements were executed through a vertical jump, with no energy lost to the lateral GRF.

  • Both the SS41 steel and the M.E.F(martensite encapsulated islands of frrite) dual phase steel made of SS41 steel by heat treatment were welded by friction welding, and then manufactured machinemade Vnotch standard Charpy impact specimens and precracked with a fatigue system at BM(base metal), HAZ(heat affected zone) and WZ(weld interface Zone). The impact test of them was performed with an instrumented impact test machine at a number of temperatures in constant loading velocity and the dynamic fracture characteristics were studied on bases of the absorbed energy, dynamic fracture toughness and fractography from the test. The results obtained are as follows; At the room temperature, the absorbed energy is HAZ.geq.WZ.geq.BM in case of the M.E.F. dual phase steel: BM.geq.HAZ.geq.WZ in case of the SS41 steel, HAZ.geq.BM.geq.WZ at the low temperature. The absorbed energy is decreased markedly with the temperature lowering; it is highly dependent on the temperature. The dynamic fracture toughness of the M.E.F. dual phase steel is HAZ.geq.WZ.geq.BM at the room temperature; BM.geq.WZ.geq.HAZ below-60.deg. C. Therefore the reliability of friction welding is uncertain at the low temperature(below-60.deg. C). The dynamic fracture toughness of the SS41 steel; HZA.geq.WZ.geq.BM at overall temperature region. The flaw formed by rotational upsetting pressure was shown y SEM; in this region. The absorbed energy per unit area and dynamic fracture toughness were low relative to other region.

  • In this study, the flow and combustion characteristics of flat flame burner with twirler were investigated. There are several factors that define the characteristics of burner. Among them, the experiments was focused on swirl effect by four types of twirler in terms of flow structure, distribution of temperature and emission characteristics. In PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) experiment, the less of swirl number, axial flow is dominant at the center. As swirl number increases, the flow develops along the burner tile and backward flow becomes stronger at center. From the combustion characteristics, as long as combustion load increases, blow-off limit was improved. But at the higher swirl number, the limit is decreased. At swirl number 0, the temperature is shown typical distribution of long flame burner. but swirl number increases, the temperature distribution is uniform in front of round tile. Therefore, the temperature distribution is coincided with flow structure. As excess air ratio increases, NO concentrations are high. But high swirl number gives rise to become low NO concentrations. The flame characteristics are comprised in wrinkled laminar-flame regime according to turbulence Reynolds number(Rel) and Damkohler number(Da).

  • In this study, a bar impact test of low velocity was carried out to gain an insight into the damage mechanism and sequence induced in alumina plates(AD 85 and AD 90) under impact conditions. An experimental setup utilizing an instrumented long bar impact was devised, that can measure directly the impact force applied to the specimen and supply a compressive contact pressure to the specimen. During the bar impact testing, the influences of the contact pressure applied along the impact direction to the specimen on the fracture behavior were investigated. The measured impact force profiles explained well the damage behavior induced in alumina plates. The higher contact pressure to the specimen led to the less damage due to the suppression of radial cracks due to the increase in the apparent flexural stiffness of plate. It had produced the change of damage pattern developed in the specimen; from the radial cracks to the local contact stress dominant damage. It would contribute to the improvement of the ballistic property in ceramic plates. The observed results showed the following sequence in damage developed: The development of cone crack at impact region, the formation of radial cracks from the rear surface of plate depending on the plate thickness, the occurrence of crushing within the cone envelope and the fragmentation.

  • A time-frequency analysis method was developed to analyze the dispersive waves caused by impact loads in structural members such as beams and plates. Stress waves generated by ball drop and pencil lead break were recorded by ultrasonic transducers and acoustic emission (AE) sensors. Wavelet transform (WT) using Gabor function was employed to analyze the dispersive waves in the time-frequency domain, and then to find the arrival time of the waves as a function of frequency. The measured group velocities in the beam and the plate were compared with the predictions based on the Timoshenko beam theory and Rayleigh-Lamb frequency equations, respectively. The agreements were found to be very good.

  • In this paper, a 10N class liquid propellant rocket utilizing a dissolving reaction of hydrogen peroxide is constructed and tested. Through a series of designs, seven orifices with a diameter of 200 ${\mu}m$ and a nozzle with a neck of 2.5mm in diameter and area ratio of 2.56 were made. The platinum coated on Isolite was used for catalyst. 90wt% peroxide pressed at 20 bar by nitrogen gas was used for performance evaluation. The length of the catalyst bed and the load of platinum was taken as the parameters for this experiment. For the catalyst support length of 4cm loaded on 5wt% platinum, satisfactory $c^*$ efficiency and stable thrust was observed. The light weight body of the rocket was composed of aluminum. Rocket rose about 10m with relatively constant velocity in launching test.

  • Blast injuries in a compartment are investigated, and the effects of obstacles on blast injury are particularly analyzed by comparing injuries in the compartments with or without protruding obstacles inside. Even if blast pressure profile tends to be complicated in a confined space unlike in open field, it can be obtained in a relatively short time by using some empirical fast running models for simple confined spaces. However, a finite element method should be employed to obtain blast pressure profiles in a case with obstacles in confined spaces, because the obstacles heavily disturb blast waves. On the other hand, Axelsson SDOF(Single degree of freedom) model and ASII(Adjusted severity of injury index) injury level are employed to estimate blast injury in compartments, because the usual pressure-impulse injury criterion based on the ideal Friedlander waves in open the field cannot be applied to personnel in a confined space due to complexity of blast waves inside. In cases with obstacles, chest wall velocity was reduced by 26 to 76 percent(%) and the personnel injury in the compartment caused by blast was also reduced.
